Its a mystery

Its a beautiful day today and the boys and I went for a nice long walk. We have some windows open and the door to the kitchen which leads to the breezeway and the dog door so the dogs could come and go as they please.

My neighbor was out too. She has cats and they come out with her. Drives the dogs nuts. I'm inside and the doorbell rings. Dh answers the door. There stands my neighbor...with Garfunkel 8O . How the heck did he get out? The yard is fully fenced and at the shortest its four feet tall. He's never jumped the fence. Ask the neighbor if she saw how the dog got out. No, she was working and Gar came over to say Hi. Check the gates..tight. Dh and I walk the perimeter of the fence...maybe he dug his way out..no. Go into the neighbor's yard and call Gar...he puts his front feet on the fence but he can't get over.

I stay out with him for awhile hoping he'll show me what he did. A couple times he ran full speed at the fence because the cats were out there. He did what he always does, front feet hit the fence and that stops him.

We have four doors in the breezeway, to the garage, to the kitchen, front leading outside to the driveway and the back with the dog door. On the front, we have an old fashioned hook and eye that we use to secure the door. Its at the top of the door(it did keep out someone who tried to break into the house...bent the door, but didn't get in)

The only thing we can think of is when I came back from walking them I didn't re-attach the hook and eye and Gar, barking and jumping on the door when someone dares to walk past the house, hit the handle and let himself out. There are muddy paw prints right next to the handle...not the only muddy prints on the door but its the only explaination we can come up with.

Oh that is bizarre! Sometimes just a quirk of fate and all things are aligned like hook/eye thingie you mentioned...cats outside... may have caused Gar to jump the fence without thinking about it...and something he would never consciously do. Those things happening around the same time could have caused it.

That...OR,,,,,,,

You secretly have a dog that turns into a boy and then reverts back to a dog.....hmmmm Disney should really make a movie about that!...;o)
Tiggy has jumped the baby gate twice. Both times she was really excited and once over got a completely surprised look on her face, that seemed to say "how the hell did I get over here?"
Normally she thinks she can't jump it and the two occasions didn't make her think she could thank goodness.
So as Marianne said maybe the planets aligned just so and he managed to jump the fence.
We had the same thing happen years ago with one of our other dogs Auggie. We at my parents on Easter. We finished dinner, and called the dogs in. Tasha came but wheres Auggie. Gates were all closed. We found him down at the corner a very busy corner at the gas station.

Too this day we still talk about it.

We always figured he just kind of fell over it and was surprised.

Hopefully Gar doesn't do this again. Maybe he just wanted to say HI to the Kittties.

Harry had a "fall over" incident as well. Heard him barking but thought he was on duty. Later when I got tired of his noise went to call him in and barking got more intense, "Here Mom!" He was in neighbor's yard with their dog pack. Top wire of the fence was a bit slack.....all we could figure. He can't climb due to bad rear structure.
Freaky!! Glad you have a good neighbor. What a fun adventure for Garfunkel though!!
Happy that gar is home safe!
