our adopted dog had hook worm!!

Hi we adopted a dog from Louisiana in Feb. She was at a shelter there. She has been sick, diarhea and vomitting for a while. We ended up having to bring her to Tufts Veteranery school, where she was there for 5 days. They were looking for a blockage, addisons disease and other things when finally the verdict came back hook worm!!!! I spoke with the shelter and they told me yes she had hook worm there and was treated for 3 days then 2 weeks later, she was not given the next dose in 3 months, I got her, they did not tell me she had hook worm previously. She could have died!!! It cost me $1600 dollars to find out it was hook worm rather then $60!!! The shelter never let me know she had it!! I am so frustrated!!! But she will be fine!!!! That is the best thing!!

Boy, you'd think that was something that they'd let you know immediately. What the heck? That just sounds irresponsible on their part. AT least she'll be fine and that is what matters in the end!
I volunteer at our local animal shelter, and god, I HOPE that something like that would never happen! That's ridiculous that they wouldn't alert you upon adoption! I can't believe that...gosh, I hope, I really really hope that something like that would never happen at our shelter!!!
Hi Jani,

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I couldn't help but be impressed that you loved your girl so much that you tried to find the cause of her illness. A lot of people would have returned a dog like that to the shelter if they found out she was sickly. Not you! Good for you and you're an angel in my books.

Still, it's troubling you went through so much grief and avoidable expense which could have been solved if you had been told all the facts. Hopefully, the shelter has been made aware and will avoid doing that to someone else. I hope so. Perhaps it may help them from making the same mistake and having a newly adopted dog returned should the same thing occur.
