Breader and health of her dogs

Bella has occasionally been limping after hard runs at the park. We thought that she had just pulloed something because the limping went away with in the day and it was not all the time. The other day it did not go away by evening and she was still limping in the morning, not as bad but still there. We called our vet and we were able to get her in that morning. The vet wanted to do some x-rays because the injury seemed to be in the hip area. The x-rays showed that Bella has mild hip displasia in her left hip. The right one looks fine. Needless to say we were devistated, Bella is only 5 years old and loves long walks and romps with all other dogs. we have her on some anti inflamitory drugs and started her on glucosomine and condrotrian per the vets sydgestion. As I've said in other posts we got her through Puppyfind from a breeder that said her dogs hips had been checked and were "OK". Other than that Bella's health has been great according to our vet. She is on the heavy side at 90+ pounds but she is a big girl and her parents are big as well. We are very conserned "parents" and a cationary note to anyone considering getting a dog from Puppyfind RUN, DO NOT WALK, AWAY FROM ANYTHING ON THAT SITE. I will supply the breeders name to anyone that asks or if Ron will let me include it here her name is Linda Wendel if shay linn kennels.

I'm so sorry. :( It's a sad diagnosis. I'm currently investigating options for a 7 year old with severe ortho issues of the hips, spine... all joints are affected. She's had bad hips since she was 8 1/2 months old. The most important thing is to get her to and keep her at a good lean weight and on the supplements... be prudent with exercise. Exercise is needed to keep the muscle mass so she can better cope/make compromises for this condition but certain activities should likely be restricted. I don't know anything about this breeder... have you notified them that your dog has been diagnosed?

This is exactly why I say that buyers should never take a breeder at their word that both parents hips are "OK" or "JUST FINE". DEMAND proof or walk away. OFA ratings are available... it's one thing responsible breeders use because it allows them to publicly convey the health of their dogs. And it's from non-partial, 3rd party professionals educated in the field of orthopedic health. It's not that things can't still happen with the carefullest of breeding... but it is one way a breeder shows they love the breed more than just the money. Everything should be done to prevent dogs from having to suffer from this condition and sit on the sidelines while other dogs play.

I'm so sorry that Bella has been diagnosed with HD. :( At least it's only one hip, and mild. Hopefully that means that she will be able to lead a fairly normal life.

I've never purchased through puppyfind or heard of her breeder.........but not sure it is the fault of either. I remember someone posting here that their puppy was diagnosed with HD and the breeder had excellent hips 5 generations back on both sides???? Anyway I asked a breeder friend of mine ( has been breeding oes for 20 years) she said that HD can pop up in the best lines. You do your best and not breed dogs with HD and hope for the best.

Again, I'm sorry you are going through this. I hope she can live a happy life despite the HD. :hearts: :ghug:
Oh poor Bella! We know about HD. Gigi was diagnosed with HD in her right hip at eight months old and reconfirmed at two and half years of age.

As said earlier, keep her muscles strong and her lean. Gigi has great muscle shape and is only 64 pounds. I can walk her for short distances. If too far, she will limp and have pain for a day. At this time, she is not on anitinflamatories, but we have them for when she has pain. She does take dasaquin everyday and eats a quality food and I add pumpkin.
Thank you all for the words of encouragement. We are working on the weight and limiting excercise. So far, this week, se has seemed fine after the initial problems. She is not pleased that we do not paly fetch r let her run though. Thanks again I'll keep posting.
Poor Bella. Give her a gentle hug from me! :ghug:
Poor Bella - huge hugs to all.

vitamin C is a good alternative - as this will help to realign the two elements of the hip joint back together.
