Hoarding

I was watching TV and just came across the hoarding program. I don't usually watch this kind of stuff and I don't know why this one caught my attention.

This guy had SO much he had to slither on top of the stuff with maybe less then a foot to get through a doorway. His neighbors came together and helped him clean out his front yard which was heaped with garbage...they took TONS out. I watched this and was totally horrified. I have a "little" claustrophobia problem :o and this has stuck and is still sticking in my mind.

I know its a sickness but I just don't understand it.

I've watched hoarding shows a few times but got to the point where I can no longer watch. I've done a bit of research into this and the medical conclusion is that it is a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder. The shows make it seem like once the hosue gets cleaned out and "organized" the problem will be solved. The hoarders have very deep psychological problems that can only be resolved through medication and therapy. I feel like these people are being exploited for entertainment.

I saw a program with a woman who hoarded food. She had moldy yougurt in her fridge but didn't see a problem with it and thought it could be eaten. That's when I decided I couldn't watch.
I've watched it too...and I have to be in the right mood to do it, for sure.

I think they do cover the mental health aspect pretty well - they always have the person in some sort of counseling, and show it. I've also seen many episodes where they get nothing accomplished d/t the person's disease and them freaking out when stuff starts to be removed. :(
I've not watched the hoarding shows per se, but I've seen a couple on like Dr Phil and Oprah. What was explained was that usually something terrible happens in the person's life, like the death of a parent, child or some other trama that they can't deal with so they start holding on to "things" which they think they can control.

I experienced this with my daughter who had a few tramas to deal with and she started to hoard things in her house and also her room once she moved back with us. It took a number of years for her to deal with what was making her hoard and I do understand. She never did get professional help because she refused, but through time I worked with her and now she doesn't feel the compulsion to hoard she throws things out. Her statement was she felt that she had lost so much she just had to hang on to everything she could.
