2 Males or Mixed

I have talked about this once before.

We are leaning toward another male. A very knowledgable friend that has bred and raise OES for over 40 years highly recommends against 2 intact males in the same house. She has 2 males that got along well until the younger one (over 4 years younger) turned about 2 then they became hostile toward each other.

Does anyone have first or second hand experience with 2 intact males in the same house? How did it work out?

We will be showing Dex and his new roommate so neutering is not a near term solution. A male would be a lot simpler than having to send one to the spa periodically until the hormones realign.

I had 2 intact males but they were a father & son. And you have to remember I do have a regular kennel in my downstairs. So my dogs are in their own kennel space when they are not around in the house with me. It is & always has been a pretty scheduled situation so my dogs always know what is expected of them. They always got along fine but I never let them have a chance to do differently. It just wasn't part of the program! And I had 2 girls, one of which "ruled the roost". The breeder who I co-breed with & mentored me always had several males & they all got along fine. I would say a lot has to do the the actual temperament the dog is born with along with training. For people that call me about a puppy & already have 1 dog, I generally do suggest the opposite sex just because it is generally 1 less thing to have to think about.

As for having an intact bitch around......the boys can be a bit overbearing at times but there really are only about 3-4 what I would call bad days when the girl is really breedable & they will go off their food for those days as "nothing else matters" right then. But otherwise, I have found that keeping them separated in crates or kennels so no accidents happen but where they can see each other makes it easier on the male. If he can smell her in the air & he can see her he at least isn't going nuts trying to find her. If he can't see her but smells her...that's what is going to bother him.
We are trying to avoid seeing Dex go nuts and don't want to crate him (or her) a couple periods a year.

Dex was crate trained and does hang out in crates at shows but he runs free in the house. I'm retired and my wife will be in the next 6 months (though she works from home 3 days a week now) so the dogs have a lot of direct upright contact daily.

We're still holding on another male.........................
Another angle to look at it from is "how is he around other intact males"? I realize they are strange males as in not living in his household & there might be a bit of a territorial thing present. But if it is just a little bit versus out & out hostility it might give you an idea how he'd deal with living with another male. Having to deal with a some crated days a couple times a year is better than living with 2 boys that aren't happy with each other 365 days a year. And remember, when the girl is in season, your boy could be loose in the house with you as long as she's crated or in a closed off room while he's loose.
Very good points. Thanks.
We have a household of males here.
No issues at all.
Right now it's 6 males and one (spayed) female.
And we get intact foster dogs in quite often.

At any given time usually a couple of them of ours are intact.
Chewie is, almost 6 yrs and no issues with other intact males at all. His best friend is an intact 6 yr old Samoyed - they have stayed together in the same home for a week at a time, we share motel rooms for dog events, we show and do all our sports with them - if you look at our sledding/carting pics - he is the Samoyed pulling together in harness with Chewie.
Also - they always have 2 male Samoyeds and are always intact show and performance dogs - no issues.
We also have Bond (who is still a pup), and our lab Biscuit was intact until a year ago.
Great news! So far it's Baxter that will be joining us soon! (soon is a relative time frame)
We have been swayed by logic and recommendations; our next OES will be female. Now all we have ot do is find her!

We know of 4 litters on the ground and another due in 3 weeks. 2 of the 4 are probably all spoken for (we haven't confirmed that) and possible that all 4 are taken. We have an offer to select either sex from the coming litter.

More as it develops....................
Congrats! Decision made! Now the wait :)
