can you make them sleep in longer?

I have a 10 month old puppy and she is lovely except that she loves to wake up at 4. For a while it was 6 then slowly got earlier and earlier. We try ignoring her but it doesn't work out well. We can get up and feed her and then she will sleep again but by then I am wide awake. I know the solution would probably be to make her sleep in another room, but I am wondering if there are other options before I resort to that.

I had THAT kind of pup..oh!!Wait!!! I STILL have that kind of pup!!! Heart is any early riser..she will try to wake me up at about 5...with slamming her body against the bed...if that doesn't work...she will 'talk' to me..and Pearl will chime in with her old lady high pitched bark..Coz, just sits there, watching...Then if I STILL don't wake up, Heart will jump on the bed....walk all over me, jump down, and wait..if I just roll over she continues this torture until I get up....

SO..I guess my advice to you is.............get used to it!!!!!!! :sidestep: :sidestep:

Good Luck!!!
We moved the crate to another room. We sleep much better now.
We started their walks much later in the evening so they're tired at the right time. Also consider and I hate to suggest this but try jogging or a much more brisk pace for the last half of said walk.

Not sure I have any solutions for you, just wanted to let you know you're not alone... :P

my previous OES Gracie was my alarm clock for 10+ years. If she did not hear me up and about by 6:15a she would be in my room pacing around the bed breathing heavily (kind of a pretend bark, but with just the sound of the breath coming out, no bark -- does that make sense?) After she died last November we now have a new OES rescue Mo (since almost 4 weeks ago). In temperament and personality he is just about as opposite from Gracie as another OES can be except --- he wakes me up exactly the same way! The time of the morning is not as dependable YET (keep hope alive!), but I'm convinced that Gracie in some canine interconnecteness sphere told him what works! I Love it, this way I have my new guy and a bit of my sweet Gracie as well....

So good luck with the many adjustments as your puppy is adjusting to you and you are to your puppy. It's all good. :) :)

Salla.
We have Kenny's crate in the other room. He never barks or whines but every so often we have to bring him in the room and he tosses and turns so much I can't sleep. I would just say put the crate in the other room if you want peace and quiet :)
Also, we were thinking about letting him out of crate to sleep in our room without it but weren't sure if that was a good habit to start. Any thoughts? He seems to prefer crates at the place we board him too as he has the option to be out in a big room with other dogs or in a crate in the same room and he always goes to crate they say.
When Izzie was a puppy Amanda trained her with the alarm clock. With potty training she would get up every hour etc. and then push it back an hour. Due to that Izzie is used to getting up when the alarm goes off. We also use the words "not yet". Taylor...we are working on. No issues during the week since we get up around 5, but the weekend we usually are up by 6:30. Can push it to 7 or 7:30, but then he finds something interesting to chew on. :cow: We are working on it. 8)
My big boys are not morning dogs--they will sleep until 9:30 or 10:00 some days even when we are up and moving around early. They will raise their heads and take a look and then plop back down to sleep! Sometimes they move from the bedroom to the family room and continue to snooze.

We generally don't go to bed until around midnight so that probably has something to do with it.

The past few days since returning from my trip--Murphy has slept until around 7! That has been wonderful as I typically get up at 7 most mornings--so we are in sync right now! Hope it lasts...
We sent Moe to grandmoms..they took him and his nephew out at eleven after the first night he slept til eight in his crate...since being home I take him out 930or ten he sleeps in our room til 700...
Archie is a marvelously flexible sheepie, I get up at 5 for early shift he is enthusiastic, at the weekend it is not unknown for us to enjoy a late rise 10 or even later  but Archie doesn't create a fuss he just waits patiently (probably licking a cat or sleeping) then happy to see us when we do rise.

When we are not there he just seems to settle - he does stay downstairs and is none of our animals sleep upstairs, when he was a pup he did occasionally want to play very early in the morning (night) but he grew out of that and got used to how we live.

The only time he wakes in the night is when either the sheep on the farm behind us are making a racket or a fox or an owl wake him, or maybe someone is mooching about.

So they don't all permenantly keep you up all night.... :wag:
Rufus still does this occasionally but since I got Greebo (my cat) he stays downstairs because Greebo sleeps in the dining room down there- in the room adjacent to the front room- where Ru is. Ru doesn't often come upstairs to sleep now its wonderful for me! I think he's making sure Greebo isn't 'up to anything' during the night! He can see him through the glass in the door so although its not like he stares through but I think Ru is on cat guard
bloo sleeps downstairs at night, as 1. he cannot get back down the stairs, 2. i have ziggy upstairs my cat /ziggy hates bloo lol.
bloo starts barkin at the stairgate at about 5am, but thats as he is DESPERATE for a wee. whrn hes been to toilet he goes back to sleep!!!
we have same problem, i think its just the sheepie way of saying i love you xxsamxx
There is something you can do! It took awhile but we would wake up with her. Take her outside, and even feed her depending on the hour she woke up, AND THEN put her back in her crate.

After awhile by putting her back in her create she learned she wasn't supposed to be awake until we woke up.

She can sleep 10 hours every night if we could.

We also started taking her out to pee seconds before bed.
