Millie ate half a whole roasted chicken

My 13 yo daughter was supposed to be watching her after dinner, but left her alone in the kitchen with a half eaten whole roasted chicken

When I got home I found Millie under the dinning room table with the carcass. 8O I promptly took it away, but she had already eaten lots of meat and some of the bones. I am freaking out!!!!!!

Please tell me she will be okay. I've called the vet and they said I could feed her some bread and just watch her closely for vomiting or diarrhea.

Anything else I should do? I feel so helpless. Please say prayers for her. :plead:

If he didn't choke immediately when eating...most likely he will be ok. The biggest danger with chicken bones is they splinter when chewed and can get lodged in the throat. If she already swallowed them, most likely she will be ok, they will get digested ok.
Thanks for responding Guest. She seems to be doing fine....no choking or coughing.

I looked on other dog forums and it seems that most dogs were just fine after a similar episode. The odds are in our favor and I will just watch her closely for the next couple of days.

Thanks again for the post...I am much less worried now :D
I remember when Mady ate a sharp piece of plastic. We fed her bread too. I have never been so happy as when I saw that plastic in her poop. Fingers crossed that she crunched the bones up and they pass through uneventfully.
Ya know how you can buy a whole cooked chicken at the grocery store? All hot & ready to eat?
We did that one night probably 5-6 years ago.

We ate dinner & put what was left of the bird in the fridge.

When I got home from work the next day, I saw Bricky licking and gnawing on a small black plastic tub.
I didn't know what it was. I picked it up and showed my ex g/f, who was in the other room.
Her eyes got huge. She asked if there was anything else but the tub. I said no, that was it and asked her what it was & where he got it.

She said she put the remainder of the chicken we had the previous night (still in the tub) on the floor for Brick.
She then said......"I thought he would just lick it"

There was nothing left of the bird. He ate everything! Meat, cartlidge, bones, EVERYTHING!! He was licking the tub by the time I got home.
I don't remember being too nervous. He never showed any signs of distress. It didn't bother him one iota.
oh, Jennifer!!! I can see Millie under the table trying to eat it all before you caught her!!

I think it will be ok. As others have said, if she hasn't choked or thrown up, she should be fine... BUT she may be a little gassy~~~~~or at least that was what happened to MY MILLIE, (my Beardie) when she ate 1/2 of a turkey breast and then somehow got the pot of peas on the floor and ate them too~~~   no major problems...but PHEW!!!EEEEEE~~~ Gas for about 3 days....

Keep us posted..and give that little girl a kiss from Heart :hearts: for a job well done!!!!!!!!
What a scare! The bones are the biggest concern but I think you would have known right away if there was a problem.

I am sure Millie would have left the bones if you just explained that she wasn't supposed to eat those when she ate chicken. Maybe you can just cut up her chicken for her next time.
She's not out of the woods yet, those bone splinters can get caught on their way thru the intestines. So I'd be nervous until her system empties. If you have Benefiber, Metamucil or some such, make up some liquid yummy......broth, 1/2 tsp of the fiber and plenty of moisture to follow. Keep her gut soft and slippery until all leaves out the back door.
Saying a prayer for your sweetie.
Hope it all goes "through" with no issues! Poor baby! :crossed: :crossed: :crossed:
Just seeing this, hope Millie is having a good morning. Is she still doing okay?
How is she doing?

You have to get pretty unlucky to have anything bad happen. I think most of mine have done this in some form or another at one time or another and (cheerfully  ) lived to tell the tale.

Scares me too, with all the horror stories you hear. But most of the time, though obviously not recommended, it's not a problen

Millie is doing great. No vomiting or diarrhea or pain or gas. In fact, she seems very happy with herself........probably because it was a yummy dinner and she didn't get in trouble for stealing it. I obviously could not be upset with her for counter surfing if I didn't catch her in the act. Who knows, maybe the bird just flew into her mouth? 8O

I will continue to be worried a little until everything passes, but I am cautiously optimistic. Anyone know how many days before I can be sure she is okay??

One thing I know for sure, she is the alpha dog of this house. My poor little dog Jack didn't even dare to step a foot in the dinning room while she was in there with the chicken.  No worries about his belly. :phew:
