Update -Bad News Today for our sweet tiny little girl

I thought the 3 lb, 8 week old little girl I have here(my daughter named her Abby) was on the right track. She gained 10 ounces and was still as perky and playful and full of life as ever. Then she started regurgitating her food....she would eat, throw up, eat, throw up. She still remained playful and happy. I took her to the vets this morning. No fever, heart sounded great, urine a-ok. We did a barium x-ray and found out what is causing her to be so tiny - she has a vascular ring anomaly. Basically what this means is it is pressing on her esophagus, and that is what is causing the regurgitation and her not growing like she should be (not enough nutrition getting through)

There is a surgery that can be done and I basically have less than 24 hours to make the decision as it has to be done as soon as possible up at the University of Guelph. It is called Thoracoscopic correction of a vascular ring anomaly (PRAA) Here is a link to the procedure that will need to be done that could save her life
http://www.vetsurgerycentral.com/gi_praa.htm

I am obviously so upset with this and have been crying all day. To see her bouncing around, jumping up for snuggles and kisses, you would never know there was anything wrong. If the surgery is not done, she has no chance of survival and will eventually start to go downhill. To do the surgery it is extremely expensive for us, and with Steve laid off..... I just can't accept that not having enough money can be a factor on whether she is given a chance to live. I am told the prognosis is good, however I was also told there are never any guarantees that she will make it through the anesthesia and the surgery being so young and small. If the surgery is successful the good news is she will be 100% healthy and normal and will have no issues at all. It is a total fix. But what if things don't go well.....I do not want this angel to suffer through a surgery that might not work.....but then you know what the only other option is and I just can't bear the thought of it.

I don't know what to do .....

I just wanted to say I'm praying for you and your little sweetie.
:ghug: :ghug:

That you get a sign to help you through this tough time.

Lisa Frankie andMattie
Oh Amber, that is bad news about your little sweetie. We will be thinking and praying for you both.
Oh man, what a sad day :( :(

I have no pat answer for you...I have been in the same income (or lack of) issue here for 2 years, and it really does affect what you do and what you just can't. You guys will just have to sit down and make sure you can safely do the surgery without getting the whole family in a bad situation. While one puppy is loved and valuable...the good of everyone has to be the deciding factor here....unfortunately.

Maybe the vets will be willing to work with you :crossed: :crossed: :crossed: :crossed:

:ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
:ghug: :ghug:
thinking of you and know that whatever you decide will be the right decision.
:ghug: :ghug:
Special thoughts and prayers are flowing your way! :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
My heart is hurting for you and Abbey. Prayers coming your way. :ghug: :ghug:
Our prayers are with you Amber & Abby.

:ghug:

I am so sorry, she is such a sweety. I hope things work out the best for all of you. It's a terrible decision to have to make.
I'm so sorry you're going through this.
Amber,
I'ms so sorry to hear about your little princess.
I don't know how I can help here, except to offer a donation to help her.
Maybe others on the board would be willing to do the same.
We did it for Gilligan and it saved his life.

Prayers going out to you.
Poor baby :( Sending you all lots of love :ghug:

If you decide to have the surgery, I would like to donate. :hearts: :hearts:
I would donate also
Oh, Amber... :( I'm so very sorry the news wasn't better. How much have they quoted for the surgery? Are you talking a couple thousand or much higher? The percentages look good. There just aren't any guarantees when it comes to medical issues... no way of knowing which side of the percentages we'll be on.

Does the surgery need to be done in 24 hours? They mentioned this in the article you shared...
Quote:
Prior to surgery it is important to provide as much nutrition as possible to the puppy. This may include feeding a high calorie gruel. During and after feeding a meal, the puppy's front end should be elevated so as to make sure that the food will pass into the stomach by means of gravity.

Thinking the requirements are a lot like a dog with Megaesophagus where they need to be kept upright for a period of time while eating but also after so the food can leave the stomach to prevent regurgitation/aspiration. A Bailey Chair is used for this... you can get an idea of the position they may be talking about... http://www.baileychair.blogspot.com/p/b ... hagus.html

I guess one question I would have would be that if the surgery was not success, could she still thrive if treated like a Megaesophagus dog or are there other, more serious complications...
The quote I received from the University is $3500-$4000 + tax. This is if everything goes smoothly. She must stay in Intensive Care for two days following the surgery. They actually wanted to do the surgery today, however I just could not do it as I do not have the funds which really makes me even more frustrated. If I figure out a way to do the surgery she has an appointment tomorrow morning at the University at 10:15am for a consult with the surgeon and then if we do the surgery they want to be able to have it done right away. They want it done ASAP while she is still strong. If I cannot do the surgery my vet said she would not survive without it. Right now I am feeding her Esbilac in a raised bowl to help her get all the nutrition she can.

If she is able to have the surgery and it goes as it should she will make a full recovery and have absolutely no issues. She will be able to eat normally and catch up in size and continue to grow normally.

For those of you who have offered to donate.....words cannot even express my gratitude for your generous offers. I am still frantically trying to work this out so she can get the surgery and have a chance.
I can donate a few hundred dollars....if that helps you and your sweet princess...

Oh my gosh you guys.......I am speechless and so very grateful! I asked for a sign to help me know what to do and I think I have received it....Diane that would be extremely helpful...........
Thoughts and prayers are with you.

Amber,
Just tell me to whom & where to send a check and it will be on the way.
Who is it that knows how to set up the 'chip-in' button?? Is it Heather?
I will be glad to help with a check too-
You just visit this address and set it up.
Note that you must have a PayPal account.

As soon as Dh's program is over...Money will be on its way! (He has the paypal set up and I don't know how to use it)
David is going to donate on behalf of Mady, Virginia and Gracie. I spoke with Amber this afternoon and it was all I could do not to bawl in by cubicle, listening to Amber cry about the agonizing decision she has to make. Funny how little time it takes for these little creatures to worm their way into your heart.
Oh dear, poor thing. I am going to chip in as well. I have been thinking about this little one ever since I saw her picture. Positive thoughts your way.
I am going to do a bake sale tomorrow at work as well. :potstir:

Those boys love their sweets.

I'm so glad I saw this!!! Poor Abby!! She is such a sweet girl and deserves a chance at life! I donated and posted on my FB page!

:ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
I'm going to post to Facebook, and see if Adam minds my posting it on his website! We'll donate later today as well. I didn't know your tiny puppy wasn't okay until just now; I'm so sorry to read this! :ghug:
Just hit the chipin page. It's not much, but I wanted to give something.

I'm going to post on Facebook, but I'd also love to include a picture of Abby. Amber, do you mind if I do that?

Fingers crossed that everything goes well! :crossed:

:ghug:
I'm sorry; I grabbed a picture of Abby for my Facebook page without asking-- I hope it's okay?
I'm positive Amber wont mind at all!
Both Brick AND Zeke made posts to their FB accounts.
I have borrowed the picture as well. Hope that is OK? I have put on my company website as well. 3 of my clients are going to donate tonight. Keeping everything crossed. Debs
I think it would help if the chip-in page had a picture and a description of what its for. Twitter only allows the 140 characters, and its not enough to properly describe what's going on
HOLY $#!* I sent Adam the link and he just told me he donated the balance of the $4,000!!!

:twitch: :clappurple: :hearts: :cheer:

wait... now how am I going to afford a puppy?!?
:hearts: :hearts: I fell absolutely hear over heels in love with that little Babydoll when I saw her picture, like I did when I first saw the picture of my Amazing Grace. :hearts: :hearts: I want her soooooo badly!!!!! :plead: Anyway, I want to contribute something but I have to wait until my next payday :( I certainly hope all goes well, Amber, for you and little Abby. Sending prayers and angels to watch over all of you and PLEASE PLEASE keep us posted. :hearts:

THANKS so much to Adam and everyone else!! :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :excited: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Kim is crying in her cubicle at work. I know Amber, she did not post this thread with the expectation this would happen, and she will be completely floored at the outpouring of support everyone showed!!!!! A big thank you to the people who jumped in and offered donations and suggested using the chip-in! She'll be at the vets in Guelph all day today I'm sure, still waiting to hear from her. Let's all pray the surgery is a big success! :crossed: :crossed: :crossed: :crossed: :crossed:

I'm sitting here crying like a baby. This forum never ceases to amaze me. Such loving, compassionate, caring people who we can count on in emergencies. Makes my heart sing!
Oh my you all make me cry at work all the time. Now from joy, thank goodness. Hope all goes well with little Abbey. She has lots of fans!

What a wonderful thing to do very generous and kind.
What a wonderful thing Adam did, you have yourself a wonderul man and I think if you got this baby girl it would be great.

Not really great. She's lovely, but in talking with a few breeders, all agree that with Tonks and Luna being the way they are, we really must add a male when we do get our third dog (hopefully later this year or next year). And I'd love to deal with a reputable breeder that is closer to us, so that I can have a mentor should we decide to show. At the very least, I need some serious help learning how to properly groom!

I hope that whoever gets this darling tiny pup will let Adam and I be god-parents! Heck; with so many people here helping, I think we should ALL be entitled to that privilege!
Dear Amber,

I just read your post and was going to say that we are praying for you and your little pup that you find the right answer for you and her.

Now I've read the solution has been found! God bless all of the angels who stepped up in time of need. Prayers answered!

Having just spent well over $4,000 (that we did not have) for Kristy's emergency bloat surgery and treatment, we know how it feels to be put in the position of having to weigh such options. For us, it is the first time we have been in a position to have to do so and it was painful. In the past, we've had to stretch things and give up vacations and dining out for a year to cover medical emergencies, but this was different. We know we made the right decision FOR US. We'll eventually get the credit card paid off.

Here's to the healthy recovery of your dear sweet little puppy who has no idea that she even needs help and just loves living life!

Amen!

-Linda Zimmerman
I'm crying at Adam's generosity. Thank you, you wonderful man. :hearts: :hearts:
Yes a boy for sure! A good breeder will pick out the perfect boy for you too. Just like mine did. I have a very strong minded female and he is perfect matched for her lady attitude. I think Langley is related to little Abbey actually. Her Sire is Langley's Grand-sire perhaps once removed sort of thing. haha
We need to change the thread title and cross out "bad news". Holy crow, way to go Adam&Allison!

I was stopping by to pick up the donation link and send a few dollars for the little sweetheart. Should we continue to donate or wait to hear from Amber on what will be needed?
   What a wonderful thing to do Adam!!
I'm sure Abby will need post-operative care and more vet visits after surgery, so I'm thinking we should continue to give.
Amber said $3,500 - $4,000 just for the surgery.
This is absolutely incredibly awesome! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
I'm floored. Adam and Allison, you are amazing. I am speechless. What an incredible gift.

I'm so proud to know people like you are here. :ghug:

Well you might not have bought Abby but you have certainly bought (or at the very least put down a significant deposit - since I don't know, nor do I need to know, the amount donated) on a male from one of Amber's upcoming litters. Great going Allison and Adam.

:ghug: Tell Adam that drinks are on us at Sheepiepalooza!! :ghug:

Maybe we should have a special auction at Sheepiepalooza for a new sibling for Tonks and Luna!! :wag:
Adam and Allison, what a wonderful gesture from the heart!! We will be so glad to meet you in St Louis, and buy you a drink. :clappurple: :clappurple:

I keep checking for updates, seems like today has been the longest :(

I realize you are not in a position to take her but you really gave her a wonderful chance and I think god-parents would be a great roll for the two of.

Its not cool for us to take so much credit; Amber posted the Chip In the night before, and in a REALLY short period of time people had donated over $2,000! I think everyone involved deserves a round of applause; every $5 donation helped, every Facebook posting and Twitter posting. I think we shouldn't forget what a big team effort this is for Abby; now lets keep our fingers crossed and hope she pulls through!!! :hearts:
What is the amount you guys see when you look at Abby's chip-in?
I see $2,100 and 20 contributors.
I was seeing $4,100 something earlier.
I'm wondering if something is not refreshing on my browser.

OK. It's my browser. For some reason, Chrome is not showing the real amount and contributors.
All is correct when using IE8.

Whew!

Yes, and sadly, with this being Canada, the price is not including tax. Imagine taxing life saving surgery on a puppy!!! I am so happy to pay taxes to support our firefighters, law enforcement, clean water etc. but really, we need to tax surgery on a puppy?
Not sure what the tax will be....whether just GST or if it will be the 13% HST. I guess I will find out when I receive the bill.

On that note I also want to let everyone know I will be posting her bills as soon as I receive them so you can be assured your donations have gone to help Abby.
Amber if you need more funds don't panic we will keep raising he money. How is little Abi doing?

Sending :hearts: Debs x
Donated and posted to my FB page. All fingers and paws crossed for Abby's successful recovery! :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
