DIATOMACEOUS EARTH

I picked up Rufus on 1/26. The breeder gave me a reciepe for home made dog food constiting of Chicken, brown rice, sweet potatoes, Beets and carrots, and boiled egg shell water (no shells all is organic meat/vegtables and egg). He seems to love it. I am feeding him orijens puppy formula (which vet agrees with). Along with the reciepe she said to give the puppy one tablespoon of diatomaceous earth, daily to home made food. As per breeder, she said its to control parasite and for full range of minerals. Also give the puppy 1 capsule of Organic Flaxseed Oil for healthy cells and shiney coat. Pumkin for the diarrhea, which works and he loves. I talked to my vet about diatomaceous earth, he got excited. Thursday is when the vet comes to the house to examine Rufus. I was just wondering does anyone else do this, give diatomaceous earth? Will post picture of Rufus soon.

We feed Orijen too. Now at Adult level but fed the puppy formula throughout their puppyhood. I love the Orijen food and it seems to work well with my dogs.

I have also heard of DM earth in the food. NOT the same as they use in pools so beaware of that distinction. Suppose to help with tummy parasites and fleas and ticks as well...where do you get your's from?

Rufus seems to LOVE Orijen puppy formula. With the Orijen, the pet store tried to steer me away from the Orijens, stating that if they dont have enough product, they stop delievery to the states. Thank god i have family in canada and they would ship it, if they stop shipment into the us. The DM i get animal/human grade for him at the grain and feed store. I got Rufus from a breeder in Indiana. Tomorrow vet appointment, and will discuss DM with vet.

I ordered some food-grade DM via Amazon. I tend to feed it in the summer because it makes their poop toxic to flies (the tiny shards cut and dehydrate fly larvae). Go easy with it though. I don't think it is so comfortable for their tummies. It is also good for putting in fur or on bedding to kill fleas.
Food grade DM is fed to many animals for parasite control both inside and out. It is the shells of microscopic perhistoric sea critters. (I'm sleep deprived, that's as technical as I can get right now) The sharp edges pierce soft tissue.....and yes too much would be hard on tummies and intestines. I seriouly wonder about the mineral benefits, but then dog's guts are very acidic......... Neighbors' use it in horse feed for parasite and fly control.

And yes, NOT swimming pool DM. Thats a different grade and is dangerous to breathe let alone consume.

DM will also help with fleas in carpets......leave on for 24 hours and vacuum (hope it doesn't kill your vacuum...some are very picky about powders). Also other household critters, just keep puppy from sniffing the powder if used for pest control.
Janene,
You are in Philly...are you familiar with a place called Mikes Feed in jersey? I used to get my Orijen from them but found it closer to me...I have it shipped to my house and yes, there are ocassions, RARE when there is a shortage of the fish in Canada and the food supply is low...But, knowing that, I always make sure I ahve an extra bag on hand. As soon as I open a new bag, I order another one...Haven't had a real big problem getting it. I buy the 30 pund bags so just make sure you have an unopened bag always availabe and with only one dog, it should be in by the time you order it and still have the unopened one ready to go...Hope I make sense with that!

I never heard of mikes feed, I went to Allens Feed in Tabernacale NJ. Rufus saw vet yesterday and said for me to start using Orijens Large breed. He also said continue with diamatous earth, and the feeding program i am doing, he is healthy and as per vet well adjusted, and doing fine. Thanks for the info on ordering Orjens. I greatly appreciate it, seeing how this is my first oes puppy!!
