What a DISASTER

One of the area dog clubs were having an agility practice day. $10.00 for all of the agility you want to do.

So I took Frankie there just for distraction work. Our trainer says half the battle is getting there heads used to the noise and dogs.

So what they did was.. they had a course set up, and everyone took turns running it, just like at the trials I have been to.

They let everyone go by jump height. So when they got to 16 inch jumps, they wanted to know if we wanted to go in and just practice. So we did. We did the first jump, then the dog walk( seemed very narrow compared to what we use in class) did a couple more jumps, the teeter, attempted the weaves.. we are just learning them without the guard wires on them. (not good) Then Frankie was done. No Minding me at all, he just wanted to sniff the floor
So at that point we were done.
They also had jumps and weaves set up outside so we went out there and practiced.
It was fun, but we definately have to get Frankie used to the situation.
They are going to do it again in March.

He was interested for awhile! He needs to learn no matter how good the floor smells he needs to concentrate on you. practice, practice, practice. But for a fun day, it was a good start!
I'm just wondering where the "DISASTER" came in.

For a while I had the crazy dog. Never listened to a word I said. We'd go in the ring and he was off making up his own course. I'd finally take him off in disgrace.

It takes time to get your dog used to what you want him to do. In my class, we have sniffers. The uprights distract as best as they can.

Give him time and he will get past this.

Good I don't feel so bad.
I you could have seen the look on the face of the women who runs the club.
I was pretty embarassed that we even tried.

She didn't say a word to us when we finished. She did know we were just starting out.
It was interesting to try it on a different type of floor. Our facility has a dirt floor. It used to be an old horse arena.

Ignore the looks on the faces. That's what run -thrus & practices are for. To get dogs used to different locations. We'd all have out titles in no time if the judges came to our backyard! Don't let this discourage you. Most of the time, others will chime in to give you some pointers since they are seeing your dog from a different angle. We all have to start somewhere. And this is how you find out what works for your dog. That's how I figured out that anything above Rally Novice & José needed to be in a seperate building from conformation & other activities or at an independent obedience trial. Put him in a conformation setting for conformation & he's very comfortable but not to do any kind of performance work.
Tiggy and I went back to training tonight after the big summer break.

We practiced acceleration and deceleration. Ha well I knew Tiggy would excel at one and not the other, can you guess which?

Yep, Tiggy does not believe in slowing down, so she blew right on past me. Mind you so did everyone else. :D The instructor explained not to get upset or embarassed that everything your dog does telling you something you didn't know.

My answer "Tiggy didn't tell me anything I didn't know!"

She did however tell the instructor a)what I don't know and b)what I haven't done enough work on.
No one should be making a face at you, really. Whenever we had a disaster, I loved that our trainer would calmly tell us that this was totally normal, would give some suggestions and then, if we still looked crushed, would relate some of her own experiences and 'disasters' to let us know that it happens to everyone.
