Video of the breed standard

Sandy and I were talking about this last week in class. I had asked her about when the judge is going over the dog, how, what and why are they looking for. I've read the breed standard many times but have never been shown how to go over a dog so she was showing me how to do that. She found this video and sent it to me. It's dated but is good information to watch. If anyone has anything more current, I'd love to see it. Enjoy!

That was the single best 15 minutes I've ever spent on YouTube! I especially like the naration from the 9:45 - 11:00 or so... I REALLY like the side by side comaparison of the good and not good dog.

While I feel a lot smarter for seeing this breakdown, I'll admit that I'm now more upset with a certain BYB. Zoey was a rescue, turned into the shelter by her parents when she was only 4 mos. Their intent was to raise her and breed when able. Which means to me that is during her first heat at a year. Anyway. After watching this I will honestly say that our prescious Zoey fail at some degree on most points. this by no means changes anything with her. Since we got no papers with her and the shelter fixed her, she was always going to be a companion. Who knew shed turn into a GREAT companion?!

This actually answers several questions I've had. Even one I brought up last night in our chat room about brown fur. That little chat room is a great tool... We all need to use it more.

I just wish that more people, (JUDGES!!!) would watch this and learn from it.

Thanks for posting Cindy.

I just sent this video to Kim a few days ago so she can learn how we go over an OES and what we/judges are suppossed to look for. I think it is a great learning tool for everyone.

We are going to practice going over Gracie to get her used to being approached and 'inspected' and I will try to have others do it too. So much to learn!
Judges actually go through their own hands on education process. OESCA has its own Judges Education program and the materials that are presented at these seminars are online, and though directed at judges I find them very educational as well. Go to http://www.oldenglishsheepdogclubofamerica.org and then got to Breed Information on the menu on the left and scroll down to Judges Education. A very useful study guide.

Though the OESCA National Specialty is not the only place the club offers Judges Education seminars, it is probably the most visible to us exhibitors. You can attend, also, if you're at the specialty, say in West Bend, Wisconsin this year. I was told by the OESCA prez that for non-Judges (i.e. us) who attend there will be a test when all is said and done. Not sure of he was joking or not 8)

After the theoretical part presented based on the documents I directed you towards above there is a hands-on section where judges go over volunteer dogs and learn not only what to look (feel) for, but how.

Absolutely!

And so looking forward to Miss Gracies' show debut in the Baby Puppy Class!
The video was informative. I wished they showed more on a shaved dog so that you could see more clearly what they were talking about.

With that said, I could immediately pick out a lot of deficiencies with Zeke. He doesn't have that larger, blocky head like the shaved one in the video. He has a smaller head, and a smaller, shorter, pointier muzzle. I don't think his occular ridges are very prominent either.

I dont think his top line runs uphill from withers to rump. I think he's pretty level.
And I don't think his chest is long enough (when viewing from the front) or deep enough (when viewed from the side).

Yeah, he doesn't appear to be even CLOSE to the standard :( .
Poor Zekels.

But that's OK. He has a bunch of people that love him. :)
Oh, and I loved the sheepie in the video that was half shaved. Too funny!

Zekels is a lovley and well loved sheepie

As they in the breed standard there is yet to be a Perfuk sheepie born :-)

Yes showing and having to be near the breed standard is what we hope to aim for, but its a good temperment that must come top

Our Jade who was rescued was all wrong for the breed, too tall, wide chest, nose too long and narrow, large ears, but you know what it did not matter one jot we loved her dearly and had her 4 short years ,

I say love your sheepies and they will love you back they dont care if YOUR not a model/hamsom guy.

No fair  ...  ...I so wish I lived closer so you guys could teach me things! It'd be fun to bring Pru to just hang out and watch her ??1/2 sister?? :? .. learn the ropes and show off her stuff  . I love my little Prudence just as she is, but one day it would be fun to step it up a notch and learn all this stuff. I can't wait to hear all about Gracie's (and both you and David's) adventure into the dog show world  . I have been looking around down here to just go visit one to see what it's like. Are you allowed to take your pet animals if they are not participating?
