SO mad at Swifty Gas I could spit fire!

Today I went in town for groceries. I changed purses, and left my ATM card laying on the kitchen table. I didn't realize until I was half way to Marysville, but I had some cash, and knew I could get by. Well, after grocery shopping, I looked at the gas guage and thought Ut-OH. I was on "E". I dug in the bottom of my purse, and had $10 worth of quarters. No wonder my purse was so heavy!

Didn't want to get out of the CRV, so went to Swifty's, where they pump. I asked for $10 in cash. When I handed the guy the quarters, he said, "Either roll those or find another way to pay me". Huh? Well, I don't carry coin wraps, and had no other cash or plastic with me. I told him as much.

He smarted off about it being cold and him having to count all that change. Now mind you, they were ALL quarters. 40 of them. I told him there was no sign that said Swifty did not accept change, and it was legal tender. The whole time he was mouthy and rude. Telling me I should be prepared when I come to his station. I told him I was. He had gas, and I had money. Now mind you, all this time, there is a long line behind me, waiting for service. I told him it took less than 20 seconds to count to 40. And he said "Oh, so if it takes such a short time, I'll count them again" . And he proceeded to count that change FOUR more times. All the while, CUSTOMERS were WAITING.

Well, he found a Canadian coin, and said it was not legal in the USA- and I needed to come up with .25 cents in some other way. I gave him 25 pennies, told him I was glad he was so concerned about counting coin that he let other customers wait, and drove off.

I plan to write a letter to the corporate office, not that it will help. I will do one of two things. Boycott Swifty, or pay with rolls of change each time. I haven't decided yet. Jerk.

Pay in coins everytime.....make sure its the same guy every time too
Should have asked for $9.71 worth of gas and expect 4 cents change!
It will be interesting to see if it's company policy or his own personal policy once you write to corporate. :lmt:

Don't spit fire at the gas station though. :D
If I were one of the customers behind you, I would have been digging like crazy for change to pay my own total!
Axshully, I think maybe by law US coinage and Canadian coinage are accepted at face value in both countries as legal tender in both currencies.

There may be some sort of limit on this, but it certainly isn't 1.

Edit: I always used to think this was so, but I can't find it on the net.

Anybody?
You're MUCH more patient than I would have been! I would have counted them in my own hand while he watched, given them to him, then driven off! Will be interesting to hear corporate's response!
I think 94 cents is the number which requires the most minimum number of coins; 3 quarters, 1 dime, 1 nickel and 4 pennies.

So next time be quite specific and order $9.06 worth of gas and hand the guy a $10. LOL
There's a wonderfully vicious streak that certain things bring out on this forum, Ive noticed
You know... I think mills are technically legal currency if you have them... and they still price the gas in mills ((9/10ths), don't they? Or am I showing my age?).

Since I don't have any mills lying about the house, ask for EXACTLY one gallon, and have a pre-written check for the exact amount:
"Three and 499/1000 (Dollars)_________ $3.499"

:sidestep:
oh Lori!

omg I would have LOST it completely. I want to go smack the guy myself

I would have told him it wouldn't be such a big deal to count all those quarters, but
maybe it's because HE CAN'T COUNT THAT HIGH!

ov vey

get him fired. teach him some customer service. and yes, if I was behind you
I would TOTALLY HAVE PAID IN CHANGE

what a butt head
I am fairly confident that Canadian coins are legal tender in the US--I used one just the other day at Starbucks--they took it and didn't say anything about it--just put it in the register.

A Canadian friend had been here visiting and I guess we mixed money at some point--think it was when we were buying the wine. :D

As a Canadian border state, here in Minnesota we accept Canadian coins the same as US. I don't think that is the case everywhere, especially the further south you go.

Lori...I vote on going back with coins as often as possible!

And yes, DEFINITELY let his boss know about that behavior.
Retailers in Canada may refuse bank notes without breaking the law. According to legal guidelines, the method of payment has to be mutually agreed upon by the parties involved with the transactions. For example, convenience stores may refuse $100 bank notes if they feel that would put them at risk of being counterfeit victims; however, official policy suggests that the retailers should evaluate the impact of that approach. In the case that no mutually acceptable form of payment can be found for the tender, the parties involved should seek legal advice.[9]

Canadian dollars, especially coins, are accepted by some businesses in the northernmost cities of the United States[citation needed] and in many Canadian snowbird enclaves, just as US dollars are accepted by some Canadian businesses.

current exchange,
1 canadian dollar= 0.9864 us dollars
In NYS (at least in Syracuse and I'm sure in Watertown, Buffalo, and Plattsburg), I bet you couldn't find a person WITHOUT a Canadian coin on them.
Todd and Russ (one of our friends, they are sitting here waiting to go to play poker) both said that if you report this guy, he will not have a job...workers like that are too bad for business and are a liability. Now if he's the owner's son, that may not be the case...
Post the episode on your facebook page, along with a promise to update it as soon as you get a response. And let the manager/corporate know - they may act faster to head off bad publicity.

And we have a TV reporter, who is "In Your Corner" - this type of story is right up his alley.

OMG-- One complaint is specific to that little business in Marysville. I am sure "Bobby" is long gone though. They seem to move on pretty quickly there. :x
Being a VERY sarcastic type who lives to torment those who truly deserve it must respond to this. Here is what I've DONE and Strongly recommend you do;

Figure out what is 'his' shift and go in EVERY SHIFT. And buy four or five dollars of gas and pay in unrolled pennies. And make sure those pennies have been thoughly rinsed in Coke. This will make them rather sticky and will immediately contaminate everything they come in contact with. If you REALLY want to twist it to him, as you walk out after this person has already become as irate as expected, turn to him smile and remind him, EVERYTIME that there is a reason he works there and the shift if it's a not so desirable shift.

Also, call the store during store and get the name of his manager and that manager's district manager and let them know what kind of rude person is representing their brand.

If all this doesn't do what ever you want done, tell him that you'll continue doing this until he cleans up his act and you'll bring all you friends with all their sticky pennies. If he gives you any grief about company policy, demand to see it in ink, on corporate letterhead, signed by the now newly acquired district manager's name. Be sure to make him aware that you know that person's name.

This a game that honestly he can't win because you're making up the rules. Personally, I buy gas at either Meijer or Speedway; great prices for Marathon brand gas and people who enjoy being a company person.

I had a very similar thing happen at a Rite-Aid pharmacy. I was dealing with a floater pharmasist who was so rude that the regular pharm techs hated working with him. After two phone calls, I was assured that this floater will never see the inside of my pharmacy which was my goal. I didn't care if they kept him on payroll, I just didn't want to have him deal with my prescriptions. After this, I actually had three of those techs thank me. Just think, I made three people enjoy going to work again...

I have and still technically work in customer service and understand people have bad days. But those in CS need to know how to keep those bad days in their heads an not let it effect who they deal with daily. I'm VERY good at it and very proud of it.

Use your head and at all time remain calm and intelligent!

I'd be upset too - no reason for anyone to treat another person the way he did.

As for legal tender , I was curious and looked it up on the net and found out if the "service" has already been done than the merchant can't refuse the money. They can ahead of time refuse payment of credit card, checks or large bank notes but ONLY before the service was provided. Once the service is performed the merchant has to accept the payment.

Just today I opened my wallet at the grocery store in order to get a cart and realized I only had US coins. I think most border towns find the US/Canadian coins are interchangeable. I've never had anyone refuse coins - while bills may be another story.

I hope the fleas of a thousand camels infest that guys armpits...ahhh that would be Karma.
That is such crap! We have all full service gas stations here in New Jersey. You can pay with pennies if you so desire. Quarters are certainly a legal tender, and must be accepted. You don't need to roll your change. That is ridiculous. I would be on that company's website, sending in a little email or letter complaining. You and all of the other customers who had to wait, should not have to deal with a service person who is A)RUDE and B) LAZY and C) WRONG!

As a side note, I have never ever had an issue with a Canadian coin.

Next time, you should pay it all in pennies.

I just read about the full service stations in NJ. I think that is great!
I've never in my life had an issue with a Canadian coin either--- he was just being a jerk. I have my letter ready to be snail mailed and emailed to the corporate office, to be followed up by a phone call.

May seem like a small thing, but I am sick and tired of mediocore Customer Service!!!!!!
Lori, it's your money. How bad do they want it? if they want it bad enough, they should earn it on EVERY level. Swifty CAN'T be the only gas station in town and they know it...

Keep up the good fight and let us know what happens.
Vance
YOU GO GIRL!!!!!!!
love the fact he didn't want to take the 25 cent canadian coin so you gave him 25 pennies :excited:

as someone who collects the coin piles hb leaves around the house, I fill my wallet and have never heard any complaints from Dunkin Donuts, Tim Hortons etc when I hand over a fist full of coins that I have already counted out for them. Money is money.
I thought of this post again yesterday as I stopped in the post office. Hearing that stamps to the US had risen by 2 cents I wanted to purchase a couple of stamps to add to my existing ones. Purchasing four and paying a penny tax the total price was 9 cents. LOL

Retrieving coins from my pocket - I realized I still only had US coins ( a nickel and 4 cents) and with no hesitation the Post Office accepted the tender. So in a nutshell if the Canadian Federal Government can accept US coins so should a gas station accept a mere 25 cents in Canadian money. Blah to them.
