pulling out barrettes

Millie has recently started using her front paws to pull out barrettes and bands from the hair on her head. :x She is 17 months old and had never minded having anything in her hair.....until now. So, I was wondering, is there anything wrong with just letting her hair be natural? I know she cannot see as well, but what can I really do?

If Dexter doesn't have a seeing-eye human on a lead he runs into things when his hair is down. He has slammed into door frames and cabinets pretty hard so spends very little time without a top knot.
Pru is doing this also...and she is only 4 months old. I am hoping if I am persistent she will get used to them, because when I need to get a top know in her I am scared she rub a big 'ol knotted mess by trying to get the rubberband/hair tye out. I hope people offer up some words of wisdom. :)
If the hair is down you risk eye injury if they run into something. I just trim the eyes as I'm not fussy about their appearance and they surely don't like being fussed over. If I can't see their eyes, it's time to trim......don't forget to trim the sides so they aren't looking down a tube.

Will your baby tolerate rubber bands instead? If you pull too tight or get eye lashes caught up in the updo, that may be bothering her.

Remember you are in the bratty period......Twilight Zone....where perfect puppies become spawn of the devil. She might be testing you.
We just worked through it. It's a phase and will pass.
Tiggy had a phase and she will still do it if I pull her hair too tight.
She runs into things without her hair up though and I'm worried she'll hurt herself but also that she'll smash up the house, she manages that well enough when she can see.
I've had this problem with all my sheepies, probably because I wasn't patient enough. My feeling is if you can't keep a top knot on them then it is only fair to trim the hair so they can see. I would not like all that hair in my eyes.........
We made a big deal of 'ponytails' being put in. I always say to Howie 'Do you want you ponytails done?" in a fun happy voice. :cheer: I made a habit of doing it right before we would go out for a walk, so the idea of getting his hair done and a walk were good things. I noticed early on that if I put them in and did something to distract him right away, he never bothered with his topknots. Treats helped too.

Good luck, I agree with the others, its a teenage phase.

I do the same thing with Mady. I tell her we are going to do her hair and she jumps on the sofa to get her hair done. Usually then we go out somewhere so that people can tell her how beautiful she is.

A related question: does anyone have any suggestions for elastics that don't tear out the hair? Poor Mady's topknot is looking raggedy.
Chewie loves getting his hair redone - has for years.
I do it usually before we go somewhere, or he gets to do something he likes (and needs to see - sledding, agility, etc.)
And my other non-hair dogs get quite jealous!!

I was looking at little Bond last night, thinking he's about ready for pigtails!

I use Scunci or goody brand elastics for Howie. I find them at PharmaPlus. I get 100 or 250 in a pack with fun bright colours and different sizes.
They look like this.. ( I have never used the black elastics as seen in the photo).

I also use a milk bag/envelope slicer to cut the old elastic out of the hair. I am sure other folks have better suggestions, but this is what has worked for me (and howie)

Yep--same thing around here--they love getting their hair done because it usually means they get to go somewhere! They are all for it and I immediately distract them with something --usually a treat. After that they don't bother them.
I have had good luck with the grooming bands from pet edge. They are small (only two turns necessary) and seem to stay in well--I also cut them out rather than pull them out and that seems to help with breakage.
I think it's just a phase. She is testing me in other areas as well. She doesn't mind me putting the barrette or band in her hair, but as soon as she gets outside she rips it out. She either comes back in with nothing in her hair, or it's hanging by a couple strands of hair

Should I just keep putting it back in, or let her go without. (the hair on the top of her head is really taking a beating)
Kirby just started rubbing his head on anything to remove his hair ties. However he is getting better, the more consistent we are. He can not play catch with his hair in his eyes.
