Moving to Arizona

hey all-

so, we had the "big talk" today and decided that we ARE moving to AZ.

Dean has shoulder surgery end of this month, then about 8 weeks recovery.

He is going to ask for a transfer once he is recovered.

My master plan is to have us move late summer and get settled and have Hezekiah
start 3rd grade in a special needs class in the fall.

So... it's A LONG BUTT DRIVE from NC to AZ along I-40. Do any sheepie people live
along the way? Might as well stop and say hi while we are driving for a week!

I can't even believe HOW MUCH I have to do between now and move time.... oy vey!!!!

well, need to watch tv right now so I can think about all I have to do later!! :-)

Nope, MN is still not on the route!

Good luck with the surgery and then all the planning for your move. :D
Well, we realized Nashville is a good stop for day one of driving. I have
a very good friend who lives just outside Nashville, so we will stop there.

after that we know no one and nothing until we get to Phoenix!

I have a feeling we will sell and donate a LOT of stuff.... we want to downsize
even further - so we'll see what we end up keeping. Nothing if it were up
to my hubby!

I'm trying to remember this is fun and exciting and trying not to stress or freak out
:-)

we'll see how that goes!
We are in Brentwood a little south of I-40. Let us know when you are coming through. There is a fabulous new dog park in Brentwood right off the interstate--a great place to take a break. :D
Having made a big move, from Michigan to Florida, sell and get rid of as much stuff as you can. Moving trucks are expensive even if you move yourself. When you get to AZ you'll want to redecorate for you new enviorment.

Do at least one room at a time or even one drawer at a time...the packing makes it easier if you do it in bits.

Good luck!
I just found someone on CL that will deliver to us, for a fee of course- all the boxes (broke down and some new)
from their move. for $120 -

so hopefully will get those today- I"ll have a stash of boxes to work from, a little at a time

I do think we will sell and donate as much as possible. we went online and if we get those pack yourself boxes
and do it all, they will pick up and move and drop off for around $5K. there goes my tax return!

it's sad as we literally just finished paying off all our furniture from our move to this house. sigh
but, you are right and I'm ready for COLOR as I did a lot of brown this go round and I'm ready
for color to light up my life :-)

the only big furniture I'm keeping is our amazing bedroom set. it was a sample piece from High Point at the market
and it's amazing and I love it.

okay- I'll be living on CL to sell sell sell for the next few months!

:-)

That is great--we will look forward to a wonderful playdate! :D
lori,
did you get a moving quote? 5k sounds awfully high to me, although i haven't seen a quote for awhile. think i'd call and get a couple moving company quotes before parting with furniture you love or paying 5k for just boxed possessions. :)
Yes getting multiple quotes

A few years ago when we had our 'big house' we considered a move to Fl with all our stuff
$12k was the going rate from nc to have them do everything

This past year our cousins moved Ohio to arizona and their total cost was $10k
But they had cars shipped too

I will shop around for sure. Don't want to throw money away
When I moved from Syracuse to St. Louis (and then back again), it cost around $2,300 going and about $2,500 to come back. I can't remember how many pounds I moved. That's how they quote, by the pound. And by mileage. It was about 893 miles.
The basic quotes online are asking house sq ft and how
Many bedrooms and that is giving an idea. We aren't moving frig
Or w/d so that will save. We have 2150 miles approx.
I just (well not just.. few monthas ago) moved to Massachusetts from San Francisco in a Mini Cooper Clubman with 2 sheepdogs, 2 cats and 2 birds. Whew. It was a fun ride -- we made a pit stop every 4 hrs and visited as many dog parks as we could. We also slept at a motel/hotel everyday.

We didnt use a moving truck but we did use a ABF cube to move our stuff and it was inexpensive compared to a truck and was worth it. We paid about 1500 for the convenient process. If you opt to use a cube, my advice is to plan how you'll pack them wisely. It took my husband and I all day to do it because we were unorganized. yuck.

Good luck with the move!!! Enjoy it!
Take pictures of your stuff before packing and all of the boxes. We had issues with the movers ruining our grandfather clock (we paid extra for them to pack it) and our mattresses (the truck got caught in a rainstorm - apparently the truck didn't have a good seal on the doors). We did get reimbursed, but pictures would have made it easier.
My quote for $4772 was with the ABF cubes. 8O
whoo hoo! just got a quote with spring rates for a summer move... the movers put in all
the boxes, take beds apart, and then unpack all boxes... for $4000! yippee! and I don't have to have 6 pods in front of my house or pack them myself!

still going to get other quotes of course.... this was based on weight

but MUCH happier about that!
I'll suggest the idea of selling as much as possible too. When my daughter Lisa moved home to MN after being in NY for 5 years, she was originally going to bring her stuff home.
After checking prices, she nixed that idea and sold her stuff on Craigslist. 8O
She ended up with one trailer she pulled home with her Jeep (it was just her and her dog  )
She's glad too, as she banked the money and bought new stuff after she got home....on Craigslist, of course!
I also found this site useful. http://www.hireahelper.com/movers/ We used it to find good guys to help us unload our stuff from the cube. They were really cheap- we paid $250 for 5 hours and 2 movers.

Then last week we had to move again, a place closer to the city. At first we stressed over the idea of packing/unloading all over again but then remembered hireahelper.com ... Again, they were exceptional! :)

We sold a lot of stuff on craigslist in California too.. mainly because we couldn't fit everything in the cube. You'd be surprised how many people will quickly pay for stuff. We lived by UC Berkeley which helped. Students were desperate for used furnitures.
Hi,

Wow, that's a big step and I'm happy you have decided to make the big move.

Just a note of caution from me (CraigsList Queen), I have heard horror stories of people whom have used movers from CL. One being, someone picked up the persons stuff and then promptly sold them with no intention of delivering the items. Stuff like that. Yes, I know that's a rare case but the guys that advertise on CL - many are fly by night and what if the guy doesn't show up on the scheduled day? Will people be expecting to move into your house?
Now granted I have used movers from CL aprox 3 times but that was to move items from a store or from my home to a friends...but not for my house to house move, as for that I needed someone that was insured / bonded and could guarantee they would show up. That cost a bit more but at least I knew they'd be reliable.
Same goes for hiring workmen off CL - I never hire anyone unless they have Workermans Comp as if something happens and they are not covered - they can sue the homeowner.

Sounds like an adventure and I wish you all the best!!!
First of all- there is NO way you can be the CL queen! That is MY title :D :clappurple:

Secondly- yes, movers on CL are usually crappy. I typically stalk REAL movers, get their cards, as most will do on the side jobs (if I need local stuff)

for a long distance move I would only use "official" movers. I've now gotten 3 quotes,
all in the $3K range. They will load truck, move all boxes, take beds apart, etc... then drive it
there, unload to where we want in the house, reassemble things.... and one is on Angie's list, so I'll probably use them.

With my fibro, and Dean having shoulder surgery on the 31st (next week!) I want this to be as
painless (pun intended) as possible

we plan to fly out a couple of weeks before the move, and find a house, then fly back, and drive my acadia out with 2 kids, 2 cats, and 2 dogs. then Dean will fly back, do whatever else needs done here, and drive his camaro out with a work friend- and fly his friend back

being prior military, both of us, we are sooo used to moving. being in NC for 7 years (3 different houses!) we are getting bored here. ready to spread our wings and see a new
part of the country. WEST young man, GO WEST! :-)

I love house hunting. although me and hubby have totally different ideas what we want this time around... should be interesting!

gotta go tape up some boxes. bought 140 boxes almost new and lots actually new, off CL today for $120. :-)))) and 4 rolls of tape thrown in!
