What kind of grooming products can I buy at the dog show

Nearby Dog Show this weekend in Michigan.
What grooming products do you recommend that I can only by at a show.

Frankie has a thick coat that mats up terribly.

GREAT question!

Someone told me hitting up the vendors at the shows was a great way to get stuff
But that was all the info they gave me.

Would love to hear what is there, opinions, and is the pricing a good deal?
Fun stuff to buy at shows, but be careful, I had to talk David down from buying a $300 pair of scissors! There is some lovely stuff out there. Shiny and lovely.
Most of the same de-matting products products can be purchased from Cherrybrook or other online show-oriented companies. The good part about the shows is that you can get them immediately and with no shipping charges, which is very helpful when buying gallons of shampoo or conditioner. Cherrybrook does have a booth at some east coast shows so it's the best of all worlds.

The best grooming-related item to buy at a show are shears and brushes. Try them out and be sure they fit your hand comfortably. Don't be surprised if the shears you select are $300+ but don't expect the price tag to turn you magically into a master groomer. There are some great shears for $100 or less that do the same thing.

There are all kinds of other trinkets at shows, t-shirts, leads, collars, dog beds, crates, toys. You name it. It's fun just to shop and see lots of dogs. The best of ALL worlds!
I have bought shears (scissors) - both regular and thinning - at shows. There are a couple shows that I go to and get my scissors sharpened too!

Lots of brushes, combs. Best is that you get to try them on your dog (if it's a show where you can bring your dog into - some are not).
Shampoo/conditioners, and as Nita mentioned - it's usually something I already use, but great to stock up and not pay shipping. But I also do try new products. And when I do get something the seller has recommended and is new to me, I've usually ended up liking it!
I also buy collars/leads, both regular and show stuff.

There also usually are vendors who sell art, clothes, and other fun stuff.

This made me giggle. If only the scissors were magic.
What show are you going to?

Look for the OES exhibitors. Ask them (after they're done showing) what to buy. Then only buy a fraction of whatever is recommended if you happen to run into an exhibitor named Marnie... 8)

She'll try to get you to buy some Isle of Dogs detangler which IS rather good, but smells like it should be toxic. I use it, but very sparingly. But do study what kind of brushes etc they use and how they use them because though anything you can get at a show you can probably get online, some times it can be hard to find specifically what you're looking for later, by memory.

Of course, if you're Dawn, you will have your camera with you and take pictures...;-)

Hey!
I'm aware of my faulty memory and use my camera to supplement!! It has worked very well for me...

But Kristine is right, I actually do that!
The last show I went to, Marilyn and I went on a shopping spree. I think she had more fun then me spending my money... Seriously, we were only looking and making a list. But this way I got to see things first hand. She suggested I get, and I have since then a Resco 80 Course comb, (like this one http://www.showdogstore.com/resco---80-comb-available-in-medium-or-coarse.aspx ) and some Crown Royal Grooming Spray in a concentrate (she said to insist on Formula #3! like this bottle http://www.showdogstore.com/crownroyale-formula3-magictouchgroomingsprayconcentrate16oz.aspx ). She was able to show me not only the right things to get but how to use them too.

Being a car guy, i know that having the exact tool for the job makes a HUGE difference. Having the right tools fo grooming makes it fun to me. I can't believe I'd ever say this, but I love grooming our dogs now that I
a. know how to do it and
b. have the right stuff
Prior to this, I picked up what I call a spayed pin brush - no balls on the pins and a slicker brush that she had suggested. And of course my purple table and blower dryer of doom...

I'm convinced the dogs feel the difference in my attitude as well. They're more relaxed during the whole time now.

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!

That's 'cause they know you're a "professional" now ;-)

I agree with Kristine; most of the people showing OES will be congregated, find them and discuss what to buy from what vendor AFTER they are through showing for the day. Someone will probably even go along with you to introduce you and show you the ropes. If your dog is well behaved and over 6 months you may even be able to bring him along.

They will be aligned to prepping thier dog to show and will recommend some "show day" coat items you won't need before show day so be careful, you can get surprised when you hit the cash register.
And that's why we shopped the way we did. At that time, i didn't have much cash on me, so we prioritized my list as to what was more important and get it first.

Is Showdogstore.com a good and reasonable place for products for our shaggy companions?
I'm going to the show in Novi Michigan
When we went last year the Sheepie people were already gone.
Hopefully someone that I know will be there.
When I get home I'll really read the posts over.

Frankie's coat is tough. Very coarse. Mats up horribly. I know thats why he hates to be brushed it hurts.

OES are in the ring at 10 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday but they have big entries of Corgis before them both days so they probably won't actually show until 10:30 or later. If you do want to talk to people, I'd plan to get there no later than 10:45 so you can follow them back to their area and talk to them while they brush out/clean up. It's a nice sized entry on Saturday (13) and Sunday has 10 entered, too, which isn't too shabby. Makes it more fun for people to watch. :)
I'm going to be at the Novi shows Sat. & most likely Sunday. Will be heading out after showing Sunday as it is a 4 hour drive for me. I made it before the snow started thank goodness. Look me up if you need some help. I'm here with Annie.

This is where I found the best price for the Resco comb. They also carry the grooming spray and both were ordered and received the same week.

http://www.petedge.com is another place I've bought from that Marilyn hooked me up with. They're geared more towards selling to professional groomers and shop owners. So they tend to have really good wholesale looking prices on most items. This is where I bought my table, dryer of doom and a gallon jug of shampoo concentrate; that bottle could be a lifetime supply for a single dog owner...

I've yet to find an online source for a diamond cut choker or a plain white nylon show choker yet... anyone got this for me, I'd love to hear it. We bought one in October at the Columbus show and Caitlyn grew out of it around the first of January. We've had to go back to a plain choker for all uses. We'll probably have to wait for the next show for these.

Marilyn, good luck with Annie!

I just placed an order from Pet Edge last night for some ceramic Andis blades, comb and pin brush. This sight was recommended by my local rescue lady where we picked up Angus.

Have a great time and please let us know
what you brought home with you! :D
If you can find out what stalls are going to be there, do your homework first. I managed to save £150 on a dryer at crufts and i got him to knock me a bit more iff for cash. Some do show discount or have special show offers
I will only buy scissors from a show as i have wasted a firtune buying scissors on the internet and hated them, you nee# the right scissors for you and that can only be done by holding them
As for items.. les pooches brushes, coat king to thin out the hair if your not showing, nice shampoo, animalogy white wash is lovely, has a built in conditioner, a good medium priced scissors are gieb, i have bought scissors over £300 and still prefer my £80 gieb crocs
Main thing is, have fun, talk before you buy and shop around
Sigh... only 5 weeks till a nice shopping spree at crufts!
We had alot of fun at the dog show. We got there much later than planned, but still had time to shop and meet Marilyn and a very nice women from Toronto with her OES Ruby.
Marilyn was kind enough to show me how to use a slicker brush on the feet, and spend some time with me even though she was getting a dog ready for the ring.

We bought the Resco coarse comb, a slicker, and the Crowne Royal products that Vance recommended.

I used them on Mattie last night, and have started on Frankie this morning and will finish later today. I love love love the comb.

I'll post pics later.
Lisa Frankie and Mattie
If you aren't lucky enough to find so someone like Marilyn to SHOW you how to do things like using the slicker on the feet, it's just not the same. I thought I was doing a good job until Marilyn and Chris showed me what I wasn't doing. HUGE difference. Like I said, knowing the right way with the right tools makes it fun.

I need to get back with her on the trimming portion of grooming as I know Caitlyn's bum needs work...

Vance
Always happy to help :D . Catching my breath from a busy weekend. I am always happy to meet people in person & give them some grooming tips. I want grooming to be a rewarding & fun time for you & your dog.
