Pus on...

My little lenny who is only 10 months has got some pus on his willy. When i got lenny he became really ill with guardia (sp). He was behind with his vaccines as a puppy but he eventually had them. Now months later he is getting this pus on his willy. I only noticed it as my other border collie X started licking it ( he is a boy dog too ). Im worried. What could it be? Shall i wait and see if he gets any more before i go vets?

It happens.

Most of the time it's just nothing. Wash him off a couple times/day and keep an eye on it.
I either do a bath (if they need it anyway), or use a wet, warm wash rag and really clean it well.
If you don't keep the extra long hair down there trimmed, you may want to consider it. It gets dirty faster and traps bacteria.

If it persists, then time to head into the vet.

I have 6 male dogs, and it's really not that uncommon. It gets me in hygiene mode!
I've never had it be anything vet-worthy, but it does have that potential.
He has only just recently had his hair shaved all off due to matting.

I see that

Was the shave really recent?
He may actually have started licking it and caused the gunk you see from after the haircut. It feels all weird (apparently) after it's shaved and they often can't leave "it" alone.
For that very reason, I don't do a boy trim right before we are going out in public.....
oh maybe its his haircut then. i dont want him that short again though. i miss his fur

I know what you mean. It makes really good incentive to keep up with the grooming! :D
If he was really matted, the shave down was the best thing...and he looks mighty cute with the haircut :hearts:

However, pus to me anywhere is a sign of infection so I wouldn't wait too long for a visit to the vet. Maybe nothing but if it got infected somehow, maybe with a blade not completely santisized, time for a check. Its in a place you don't want trouble!
Look for signs of irritation or redness. He is a maturing boy, it may not be pus especially if he is intact.
The goop from his sheath is called preputial discharge. The prepuce, which houses the penis, is a mucous membrane, so it is naturally lubricated by the body, which results in a normal discharge from that area. Most of the time, dogs clean themselves, and everything is fine.

It's most likely that the recent shave has irritated the prepuce, or that it feels different to your pup due to the "exposure" :D of the boy parts. It is also possible that there is an infection.

Unfortunately, I have extensive experience with preputial problems as Oscar gets frequent bacterial infections. The goop goes from light yellow to dark green, with varying amounts, but the color alone is not indicative of an infection. (We have done multiple cultures of the dark green mucous, and it has come back with zero growth.). I know when Oscar is starting to have trouble when he licks obsessively, and the level of goop increases significantly. Then we go to the vet and do a culture.

I echo Dawn's suggestion of wiping his prepuce a couple of times a day. Oscar gets wiped every time he goes out to pee. I use disposable baby wipes, as it is very important that whatever we use is alcohol-free.

If you continue to see a lot of gunk, and your pup is licking like crazy, I would go to the vet and have a culture done, just to see if there is an infection brewing.

Laurie and Oscar
I would go to the vet as it might cause a larger issue in the long run. Water infection & so on also he does look sad without his fur :)
would the area around the manly part be sore? so if i pushed on the surrounding area for instance
If it's just the stuff like Laurie and I mentioned, it won't be sore - or not so that if you touch him it will hurt.
But he may have some razor burn or irritation if he's licking a lot.
