Kefir and Slippery Elm report

The kefir didn't quite "gel" as well as I expected, maybe becaue it was mostly skim milk. But it sure cultured, tangy smell and separates into whey and "heavy cream." No noticeable kefir mother. So I just stir it all back together. Gave it to all three dogs this a.m. or should I say 2 1/2 dogs. Paul took the kids out for first call and I dished up the food with kefir, put the approrpriate meds in each bowl and left them on the grooming table and went back to bed. I heard the dogs come in but keep forgetting it takes DH quite a while to move about, meanwhile Jack is in the laundry room.......where he usually waits forDH to hand out food. Ha! I hear the tell tale clunk of dog bowl hitting the floor....not crash, clunk as if some dog grabbed the bowl edge and carefully lowered to the floor and began eating. Problelm was it was the wrong bowl, not his. Wrong food, wrong meds. By the time I got there and traded out his bowl for MO's, poor MO had very little food left.....and only half her meds.

Kefir was a great hit this a.m. Jack took his bowl in his mouth and carried it to another room....he does this when the bowl goodies are especially good and can not be risked lost to another dog. Hopefully this tangy stuff will eliminate the last of his gas. The slippery elm has made a noticeable improvement, lets hope the looseys disappear and we are back to a good solid citizen.

Wow, I'm impressed. Kefir is a huge hit in the dog world here. I don't dare run out least I get 3 black noses bouncing off the food, "Where's the good stuff." MO, Miss Tender Tummy Picky Eater is becoming Miss Piggy. The even better side is I haven't heard a tummy rumble one from her, no middle of the night visits outside to throw up or out the other end. Jack, the intended target, is just fine and much nicer to be around even though he is still on antibiotics......I'm not sure the kefir lasts long in the gut with the meds, but life is alot nicer here. Harry, who never complains about his food just wags his tail when he smells the kefir meal. We only give them a couple of tablespoons at each meal.

Today we had a booboo. DH refrigerated the stuff before it was fermented. I thought I'd just reheat and reinoculate, but as it began heating, it started to curdle 8O I poured it into a bowl and guess I had kefir cheese and whey. curious. For dinner they got whey and a bit of the cheese......same head stands in the bowl.
So is it dead now? Do you have to start a new batch?

I've never heard of it, but it sounds wonderful!
No quite the opposite, it went bonkers and made cheese. I don't understand but it smells right so the kids are getting it. Maybe the good bacteria are dead and this is the final product.....I dunno :? I broke it up back into the whey so it looks yucky but all in all I think it is OK. New batch in underway just in case. Friend who coaches me also admits sometimes it comes out like buttermilk, once in awhile like cauliflower and whey.
Wow! Great results! Good to know! Do you think it is better than yogurt? Did you try it yourself? I've tried the store bought kind -- very yummy. I bought a packet to make it myself but I've never gotten around to it. Maybe I will. . .
Haven't tried it myself....other than licking a spoon. Maybe I'll try a store bought premade first.....coward that I am. I like yogurt so figure this is close and probably yummy blended with fruit into a smoothie.....if they have a banana flavored, Jack will beat me to it.

I suggest using whole milk or goat milk, but not skimmed milk.
Glad the kefir is helping everyone's tummies.

In general, from my limited understanding about probiotics, they are fine chilled, or even frozen, but heating kills the beneficial bacteria.

yeah, that's why I think the heated cheese isn't biologically active, but smells correct and eaten with same enthusiasm.
I'm lazy... I just buy it once in a while. http://www.lifeway.net/Products/OrganicKefir.aspx
But you're having so much fun making this stuff I may have to give it try sometime.
It's awfully easy, heat milk to 180, cool to 77, inoculate, let sit 24 hours, refrigerate 8 hours. This last batch is just perfect.
