Shurtling

Tiggy and Heart have taught Mady how to express her feelings through 'shurtling' (viewtopic.php?f=34&t=33617&hilit=shurtling). Now Mady has not had much cause to shurtle until the arrival of Miss Gracie. If Mady has a treat, for example, and Gracie tries to take the treat from Mady's mouth, then Gracie gets shurtled. No contact of teeth is made, but I am just not used to seeing Mady do this kind of thing, so it is ME who yelps. Do I ever have to worry? Amber keeps telling me that it is important to let Mady and Virginia teach Gracie how to be a polite puppy, and I suppose shurtling is part of that. And Gracie and Mady are playing together more and more, so no grudges are being held. Mady has no problem with us giving affection to Gracie, it is just when Gracie tries to take Mady's treat or when Gracie tries to sit on Mady. So do I just accept a bit of shurtling as normal teaching of an older dog to the puppy? Have I said lately how much fun having more than one dog is and how I can't believe I was so worried about it?

Short version: shurtling's good, Amber's right.

Thank your big dogs for civilizing the whippersnapper for you 8)

Even though I think originally shurtling was intended as a female trait.... :lol:

Chewie does the same thing to Bond. And now that Bond is noticing the non-OES dogs more, they are starting to join in when it applies as well.

Yes, an adult dog who will "nicely" but firmly put them in place is worth their weight in gold...truly! :hearts:

Ahhhh!! another 'shurtle' come out of it's shell!!!!!!

I agree with everyones comments.

Case in point::

Heart had not been here more than a week, when she decided that Pearl's food looked yummier than hers..So she calmly walked up to Pearl's bowl....and YIKES!!!!!

My sweet girl, Pearl, not only snarled and growled...she made contact!! with my tiny 10 week old puppy!!!! Heart's tong was bleeding!!! I immediately called Ali and told her she better find a new home for this little girl, since Pearl would surely kill her the next time. Ali just laughed and said..."Pearl is teaching Heart proper 'manners'...and I think Heart will survive"!!

Well, she was right, of course. Pearl was a very strict but kind teacher,,,,,Heart learned quickly...she is allowed to eat only her food and her treats!!!!!! :clappurple:

FYI~~Pearl has never done this before...any of my grandkids or anyone can come and take food out of Pearls bowl while she is eating.
:lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: Fun!

Tiggy shurtles the cat. He is not allowed near her food. Never any contact made just a funny cross between a growl and a roar and a lunging snap. The cat hasn't learnt polite puppy behaviour though, no fault of Tiggy's just a communication issue due to differences in dialect or some such. As a consequence the shurtling is still going on almost four years later. :roll:
Interesting shurtle fact about Mady. She only shurtles Gracie for infractions that Virginia does all the time. Stuff like stepping on Mady or brushing against her the wrong way when Mady is lying on the floor. Virginia bumps into Mady and steps on her all the time and Mady doesn't complain. Gracie does it, :twitch: SHURTLE! This does not happen when the girls are playing, only when Mady is chilling out.
