Oliver aka Shaggy

We got introduced into the world of OES rescue today. We met Oliver who used to be known as Shaggy, a 4-5 year old neutered male from East Texas. He was in fairly good health though flea infested and heavily matted in the areas the owner didn't hack off. He weighs 89 pounds. His feet were so badly matted that since his feet have been trimmed he walks very tenderly.

Oliver and Dexter get along pretty well; a savvy older male and an intact, exhuberant young guy.

Here are some pics.

We have a way to go before we decide if we are a foster or foever home.

It is good that you get the chance to get to know him and how he fits into your family before you have to make any decision. He looks very at home there, though!
Oliver is lucky to be out of his previous situation, and into your home to foster. I love fostering - it is such a good project! You start out with a rough stone and get the opportunity to help them evolve into a diamond. :go: :go:

I can't wait to hear and see more of Oliver and his progress. :crossed: :cheer:
He's beautiful! I love his eye patch :hearts:
Glad all went well. Oliver looks relaxed and happy! :D
Good luck with Oliver! He looks very happy!

Thanks for caring for him. Now you have the playmate you've been wanting for Dexter. See, careful what you wish for........

He looks sweet and happy. I like his eyepatch too and his smile.
Oliver looks like a wonderful little sheepie boy I hope things work out for all of you.
Oliver looks like he fits right in. Good luck with him whatever you decide to do. I am just glad he is in a good place and is being cared for and loved. Thanks for taking care of him.

Oliver looks like he is perfectly at home with you and the guys! :hearts: His coat is still pretty black...is he a puppy?
is coat is pretty black but he is not a puppy. We were told he is about 2 years old. When we met him they said he was 4-5. Today they said more like 7. I think he is at least 7. He has had a pretty hard life, he has not been physically abused but heavily neglected. Looks like he has spent the last long time in a crate with very little exercise theend result is he is pretty infirm. He isnt' very tolerant of Dexter's youthful exhuberance and doesn't have the fitness or energy to generate any of his own.

We are very glad to be able to help him.
We took Oliver to the vet's today. He got the once over plus, since no one has been able to reach the previous owner, the entire series of shots, plus microchip, heart worm test (negative!), and wormed for heartworm and tape worm as well as started on heart worm preventive. He was flea infested plus hacks amd sneezes when he gets up from sleeping so we are pretty confident that he has tapeworms.

He's walking better so I think his feet are becoming more comfortable. He jumped out of the back of my car twice without issue and even tried to jump in but couldn't manage enough oomph to get his butt up.

He tried to play with Dexter yesterday but bounced once then gave up. They patrol the back yard individually then join forces to examine the details together, Dexter is more interested in being together than Oliver which may be just defending his turf because he is rapidly losing interest in making friends with Oliver becuase of Oliver's lack of interest in him.
Oh! Poor puppy!! Hopefully with some TLC he will make leaps and bounds!! Keep us posted :-)
Hopefully once he is feeling better he will be able to play more. And even if it doesn't work out that he is the best fit for your family, you are sure giving him a head start for when he does move on to his forever home.
He is lovely and pleased the vets have given him a clean(ish) bill of health.

Looks like he has settled in - you do realise the OES' choose their human parents.

A few years ago a rescue in Warwickshire gave us a call as they had a female sheepie who came in with two Border Collies. We went along to meet another dog about a month or so beforehand, although he wasnt interested in us so we couldnt take him home and unknown to me - Mom and I made an impression as they kept my mobile phone details. Anyway we adopted Jade as she got on well with us and Reba. However, because she was sexually abused (yes you have read that correctly) we had to earn her trust. She expected to be "used" the first couple of nights we had her and when she wasnt she couldnt understand it. We had her for about 5 years and we loved her to pieces - she adored my Dad and brother.

Our other rescue - we had many years ago, he got us into the showing bug and we qualified him for life at Crufts - I was disraught when he had to leave us. I had grown up with him all through school, first crush etc.

I guess what I am trying to say although rather long winded is I hope it works for you all as he looks lovely and the rewards of his happiness are second to none.

I look forward to hearing about him!
Dexter and Oliver are getting along a lot better. Dexter's vet said Oliver may not be 4 yet based on his teeth but his body is a lot older. She said he will come around with some TLC and exercise. He initiated play a couple times yesterday and today, he just runs out of gas very quickly.

I love the picture!
ahhhhhh poor thing so glad he is in the right hands
:aww: :aww: :aww: new friends!
The picture fo Dexter and Oliver is misleading; Dexter weighs a little over 75 and is about 24-25". Oliver is about 3" taller than Dex and weighed 94.6 at the vet's yesterday; he is a big dog!
His energy level will adjust as he adapts to the care he is now receiving, not just the medical and physical care but the social care of both human and animal, obviously it''l take time but he will come round to trusting you.

Big dogs can be very playful too.
Bless you for taking Oliver in and caring for him so well. His is a lucky dog to have you take him under your wing and restore him to good health both mentally and physically. Hope it works out but if not you will have given him a great foundation for a good life now and forevermore.

Oliver has found his forever home! He is being adopted by a retired couple in Austin, about 200 miles from here. He and I will meet them partway tomorrow so they can be back home before dark.

He has made huge improvements since he has been with us; his cough is gone (still has a couple days of antibiotics to take), he plays more than 15 seconds, runs a little, has fairly firm stools (very firm considering 600mg of doxycycline/day), coat is coming back in, etc.

He started initiating play with Dexter the day we got the call that he was being adopted! He came with a stuffed lion that they toss back and forth and play tug and chase with. If he had left Monday or Tuesday I don't think Dexter would have missed him, now we will have an OES in mourning for a while.

The couple getting him are great; this is their second OES rescue. They walk a lot and live a quiet life. I have talked and emailed with them quite a bit the last 2 days, they are as excited as kids about him; they wanted to know everything about him, food, habits, temperment, preferred treats, sleep habits, toys, etc. They have completely prepared and equipped their house and cars for his arrival, bed, elevated dishes, food, treats, seatbelt, etc. We think they will be wonderful for him and him for them.

We will miss him, he's a wonderful dog and got into our hearts during his short stay but we expected it, afterall, he is a sheepdog.
That sounds like they will be a great match for Oliver!!!

:D :D :D
I am sure Oliver will have a wonderful life with them. Thank you so much for giving him a head start on that new wonderful life. I hope that you tell them about this forum and that they let us know how he gets on.
So happy for Oliver and for the nice couple that are adopting him! Sounds like he will be #1 in their house. Hope they join us and can update on his progress!
