Heart and a PAWS minimiracle.......

I wanted to tell you all about a very touching experience I had on Friday, while visiting the 1st grade Class for PAWS. We have been going to this class since the 2nd week of school.

A little Background.....

There is one little boy in the class who has some learning and behavior problems. I will call him Jack.

Every Friday, when I walk into this 1st grade class, lay my reading blanket on the carpet, get my bookmarks out(I give special bookmarks for every holiday so the children use them to mark their books with Heart's picture and little phrases of encouragement on them.) After I get situated, Jack is the only pupil that is allowed to spend the whole time sitting next to Heart. The other children are called one at a time to read to Heart. The teacher 'tests' the other kids one by one to advance them in the reading program.

As the teacher said on the first day of class.."Jack has different rules than everyone else." He has a teacher's aide with him during the day to give him one on one attention, except for when PAWS is there.

Anyway, Jack lays by Heart, he gets really close to her face for kisses, takes her paw and holds it. And I have a special brush that he uses to brush her while we are listening to the other kids. Heart has her head on my lap looking at the pictures of the child who is reading...all the while Jack is petting, stroking or brushing Heart's backside..(the best of both worlds!!) :D

On Friday, We began PAWS like we always do. Jack was called to the teacher's desk for the testing, BUT~ before I realized it, the teacher was on the floor with Jack, sitting very close to Heart with his hand on her the whole time.

As I was ready to call another child to read, the teacher touched my arm and there were tears in her eyes. I asked what was going on ??? What did I miss??? She proceeded to tell me the when they were at her desk and she was testing Jack on sight words, he kept turning to look at Heart, and was not even trying to say the words. She asked Jack if he would like to go and sit by Heart and try again. Jack said he would like that, so that is why they were sitting so close.

According to the teacher, while Jack was petting and 'holding' onto Heart, he got 8 out of 11 words correct!!!!!! She was so excited, there were tears in her eyes. She stated that Heart helped Jack focus, by giving him the confidence to say the words. The teacher then called Jack's mom so Jack could tell her how good he did!!!!

We need more teachers like this one. She really loves all the children , even the 'problem' children.

I was so proud of Heart and her gentleness and kindness she shows to every child in class, but I really thinks she senses the ones that need her more and she seems to be more focused on them.

I just had to share our mini miracle on Friday~~~

What a sweet story about a sweet sheepie girl. :hearts:
What a touching story. Many heroes here, from the teacher with so much patience, to the lovely Heart for always bringing out the best in people, to the boy himself for being so brave, and his classmates for accepting that he needed things to be a bit different for him to learn and to you, Val, for taking time out of your busy life to bring Heart to school so that she could work her sheepie magic. :hearts:

Thank you Heart and Val for being there for a child in need :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
Lovely. So touching. It sure makes all the time put into training and visits well worth it.

Good job, Heart. :hearts:
my 13 year old son has ADHD and it is VERY hard for him to keep focus on things. Even getting his shoes tied in the morning can be a pain. But he seems to do better with things, like reading, when he is laying on the floor with the dogs. To bad I cant send them to school with him everyday. I bet his grades would improve.

Way to go Heart and Val. :clappurple: :ghug:
