Hanged or Hung?

Its always confusing to me...If I were to "hang" the laundry to dry...the past tense would be I "hung" the laundry to dry...If I put up a picture frame yesterday, I would say, I "hung" the frame...BUT...if someone kills themselves by hanging, the newspaper will read...so and so "hanged" themselves...Why is it not "hung" themselves? Hanged doesn't seem like the right/proper word?

Hanged is used exclusively for referring to death by hanging. A person is not 'hung' to death; they're 'hanged' to death, but in all other instances 'hung' is the correct term.

Yes that's correct. I just learned this a few months ago. Bizarre.
