How much H2O

Zoe is drinking about 96 oz of water a day. I know water is very important, but is this too much? She just turned 13 months old. The last vet visit about a month ago, the vet said she was in great shape.
Every morning when we get up I put 48 oz of water in her bowl. It is usually empty when I get home from work. I do understand that she has a full day of guarding the house and sleeping! I sometimes have to do another refill before bed time.
Is my pooch ok?

Water drinking has always been a hot topic for us because Clyde is an excessive drinker. He will always drink whatever is in front of him, whether it's 4 cups or 4 quarts. When we first got him, I thought he was really thirsty so I kept refilling-- to the tune of up to 24 quarts a day. He would and still will drink until he throws up! We took him to the vet and he ran all the tests for diabetes and JRD and he's perfectly healthy, he just has a psychological need to drink water. This necessitated us limiting his intake so he wouldn't drink until he threw up or have to pee every 5 minutes. The exact formula given to us by the vet (and I've done further research which supports this) is 90ml of water per kg of body weight and even then there's a bit of fluctuation. How much does Zoe weigh? It requires a little math to do but, if I remember correctly, when Clyde was between 25 and 30 pounds, 5 1/2 cups was the high end of what his body required. I think the low end was around 2 cups.

I hope this helps. I went through so much worry on our battle with water drinking that I always hope that what I've learned can benefit someone else!

Jill
Jill,
Is is right, then, that if Barney weighs a little over 60 pounds that he should be drinking something like 10 cups of water per day? That seems like a lot. I went to a ml and kg conversion website and (although I am HORRIBLE at math) that is what I came up with, which makes sense since you said Clyde had 2-5 1/2 cups when he weighed 25-30 pounds.

Barney has the same must.drink.water.every.single.ounce.til.its.gone mentality. And he will drink until he throws up, and we are having a hard enough time housetraining him, so we control his water intake as well. I'm just worried now that it is getting hot outside that he needs more water, but it is hard to tell because he will just drink whatever is in front of him. My parents' sheepdog will drink more when she is hot or thirsty, then ignore the water, but Barney is a different story.
I have never owned a dog who drank so much water till I had a sheepie! Tyler will drink a bowl dry! When I go to my art studio, I put a small bowl down for him and he will go over and drink till it is dry. You can turn the bowl over and it is dry as a bone.

All three drink the same way so I figure it is part of the dog breed and not the individual dog. Kiera will drink so much that she pukes it up too but not very often. I just make sure that there is plenty of water for them and more in the summer months.

Yes, that's about right but I wouldn't worry about if he doesn't drink that much. There's a low end of the range and a high end. Barney is probably on the lower end. That means he drinks what he needs on his own, which is great. Clyde, at 70 pounds is limited to 10 to 11 cups a day and, if he had his way, would drink WAY more than that. It's kind of funny because for all I know, Clyde might need a lot less but I tend to give him as much as I'm sure his body could possibly need since I can't be sure of what his true needs are!
Wow, that could be a real problem to drink till they throw up!! I do agree that these sheepies like their water!! Max also drinks till his bowl is dry, and then he bows down in front of his bowl and barks till it gets refilled!! So far he's never thrown up but I keep an eye on him. At Max's puppy class there is a big water bowl in the corner, and every week Max heads straight over and just drinks and drinks ..... everyone just stares and gets quite a laugh over it, finally our trainer puts the bowl up because Max would probably never stop. The other dogs don't drink anything!!
I know it's terrible, but the last time he threw up a lot, he drank all his water and then drank Lucy's, who I thought was still drinking but had quietly wandered away. Well, she went to lie down in the living room and Clyde went running to see where she went and, while running mind you, started throwing up water and soaked poor Lucy from head to toe. She never moved but gave him a look like "oh, I hate you." Thank good ness it's only water with a little spit! I also had a narrow escape myself the other day with a small throwing up where I was lying on the floor and he came to give me a kiss after drinking. He burped and I shot up so fast. I just missed getting my head thrown up on. It's pretty sad when you reach the point where you can laugh about it...
If the water is very cold it could make them throw up also. We only use warm (room temperature) water because they drink so fast.
Another reason it may seem like they drink so much water is that some of it gets soaked into their beards. I think Carl just puts his mouth in the water so that he can come over and put it on an unsuspecting leg. That's an attention getter.
Dancer drinks and barfs on the run too. It's gross. My husband coined a phrase akin to the sound of it "She yerked up her water" and as he goes to clean it up, calls her a "yerky dog"
Jasper is another water drinker! Water is his candy, lol

Does Jasper think ice cubes are the best treat ever, like Clyde? He'll take cubes over ANYTHING!
Thanks Butterstotch for the answer to the math question!
My parents' sheepie, Maggie, LOVES ice cubes. She can be anywhere in the house, sound asleep, eating dinner, chasing the cat, but the second she hears the ice fall into the glass from the door in the fridge, she'll be there in an instant!
Barney hasn't yet discovered the joy of the ice cube, but since summer's coming, I'm sure it'll happen.
I've tried giving Barney cold, cool, luke warm, warm water, all in the hopes that one temperature will either discourage him from drinking all his water at once so he won't throw it up or that he will be able to tolerate it better and won't throw it up, but so far it doesn't seem to matter. I think it is just that he sucks it down so fast he gets too much air in with it and then that just brings it back up.
He's funny, when his bowl is empty, he'll just go on licking it, and I will just hear this slurp slurp slurp scraping kind of noise of him trying to get more water out of it! Poor puppy--he needs to learn to manage his water better!
Dancer and Sky love ice cubes too, they prefer them as a treat to anything else...lol...

Clyde too. It doesn't matter what he's doing-- when he hears the ice machine start up, he comes running full force. Ysterday he was outside and he heard it through the window and came tearing to the back door, scratching to get in!

I know, he does the same thing. I guess I feel a little better knowing that I'm not the only one with a dry bowl licker!

I suppose you have also become very responsible about putting down the toilet seats in the house, as we have? ;)

LOL. We have 2 toilet-water loving cats who already had us trained to put the lid down way before Barney even got here!

The cats are water crazy too--Lenny will run into the shower as soon as I open the door and drink from the drain, and then walk over to you and paw you with his wet paws. :P

And Kirby takes her clues from the sheepie and always ends up with a wet beard after drinking!

Oh, and Barney discovered the joy of the spray hose yesterday as my fiance was watering the lawn. He was having a blast jumping through the spray! Now that it is in the 80s out, I think he loved the coolness of it
Yep, Jasper loves ice cubes and toilets! He jumps in the shower with us and drinks the water, same when we give the boys a bath (but he stays outside the tub with them) lol He is a mess!

I try my best to keep the toilet seat down, but I'm outnumbered in this house. 3 guys to 1 girl. My two boys aren't the best at putting it back down, but I don't want to complain about it either and discourage their potty training! lol
Thanks! I guess Zoe is ok.
By the way she sleeps in our shower. And when we get in to take a shower she gives us dirty looks!
