How to comb the "pee" area that gets nasty

So....not really sure how to ask this but how do you comb out the gross area around where he pees? It gets all crunchy like right away so it's almost impossible to keep up with. The comb seems to pull the hair really hard which can't feel good for him but i dont know what else to do.

Have you used a wet wipe first to soften it?

I use a really wet, warm wash rag and spot wash that area 1st.
Then by the time I get there with the grooming, it's nice and clean and non-crusty.
Because we do therapy visits and he demo's in class a lot (and rolls on his back to be petted during breaks), I really try to keep that area non-gross.... 8)
I have a girl, so I cant tell you what to do about boy parts but this is what I do w/ Lily.

I trim around her girly parts fairly close to the skin to avoid crunchy gross pee hair. I also keep her "rear" and wear her tail meets her "rear" that way to avoid poo matts.
Oh yes - I do keep him trimmed shorter down there too.
A little hair left on the boys helps direct "the flow", so I never trim it super short - usually keep about 1/2 inch or so of hair..... 8)
HAHA! Good to know! My husband calls it smokers pee pee
I shave the hair on Dexter's penis as close as I can as well as a "launch area" in front and taper it to his chest. No nastiness left and it can't be seen so has no impact on showing.

Now if we can just get him to quite peeng on his front feet! 8O

That's why NOT shaving to the skin is supposed to help.
No trouble with that here, or any of the 3 male OES we've had.

I also do shorten the hair on the tummy immediately in front as well. No sense having long hair hanging right in front like a curtain!

I did it when he was younger, in full coat and showing as well.
My groomer does what she calls a sanitary trim and it seems to work at keeping things clean...how she does it without him biting her is a miracle to me :D I'm too afraid to cut or do anything in that area...My hands aren't that steady 8O
At the moment bloos wee area is totally matted up! :(
Id suggest warm water with a sponge then gently tease the knots out.
We just get bloos private area shaved to stop the nasty knots.

Kenny has just started peeing on his front legs too. Joy to the world 8O
