Garfunkel makes an Emergency trip to the Vet

This morning between the time dh leaves for work(7:00) and the time I heard odd noises and got up(7:30), Garfunkel got into a large dish of X-Mas cookies, and a dish holding a 16oz bag of M&M's and half a bag of Reeses Peanutbutter Cups and ate all but a few M&M's. Way too much chocolate for a 60lb dog.

I called the Vet, closed. Call dh to let him know what happened(in tears) and that Gar needs to go to the Emergency Vet. Dh calls me back a few minutes later to tell me he talked to (a) Vet and to pour 4-6oz of peroxide down the dogs throat and that he was on his way home. Oh what fun that was.

Lots of multi color vomit later, finally get hold of our regular Vet and he told us to bring him in so they can get some activated charcoal in him and to watch him. The time was 8:30, and he was in the Vet's office by 8:50.

I take full blame but I really didn't think he could get to this as it was pushed to the back of the counter and he wouldn't be able to reach it. He didn't pull it off the counter and share with Simon, and even pushed the dirty dishes into the sink when he was done.

This dog really will be the end of me.

Aw Garfunkel... don't scare your mom like that!

We have a humongous bottle of peroxide on hand all the time because Rudie's vertical leap grows 3 inches every time we leave the house.

Wow, you are fast. I hit the edit, to add a little more and you posted in-between.
Oh how frightening! I hope that Garfunkel has learned that chocolate = unhappy mama and gross stuff poured down your throat and never does anything like that again!
Pam - not to make light of it in any way, but his choice of chocolate coupled with the quick peroxide response...I'd be surprised if he even has an upset stomach

Troll.

Kristine
8O That is one motivated puppy! 8O

Good thing you persuaded Gar to "get rid" of some of it. And as far as chocolate goes, peanut butter cups are one of the better things he could have eaten, as they actually contain very little cocoa. In general, American milk chocolate (Hershey's, Mars) contains much less cocoa than dark or European chocolate, so if Gar had to eat something, M-n-M's and Reese's were the way to go.

One thing though. My friend, who is a vet, tells me that when a dog goes on a binge like this, beware of pancreatitis. Hopefully, Gar got rid of enough of his meal that it won't be an issue.

:ghug: :ghug:

Re Kristine and Laurie: in talking with the Vet, the quick response, and the type of chocolate he ate, there probably won't be a problem.

I actually argued with the Vet on the need to bring him in. I called to make sure I did the right thing and what I should watch for since I would be home for the whole day and it was dh who convinced me to take him in.

By the way...he's still there and will be the whole day.
Coloris-emesis ? Vibrantvomit?

Colorful indeed? What about the Reeses wrappers?

Yes, ALWAYS have hydrogen peroxide handy to bring back stuff they should not have eaten...(unless of course it was a caustic that would burn again coming back up).....and a turkey baster

Dogs do love chocolate! All should be well, except for a few more grey hairs for you!
8O

That's an impressive binge even by my standards!!

Good grief, the things these animals do to us  I'm glad you were able to act so quickly & all is ok now xxx
It must be the festive spirit getting into them. 8O

Tiggy stole bag of rubbish out of the sink yesterday and she never usually steals stuff. It had the smoked trout wrapper and one chicken bone in it.
I came back into the room and the little witch had taken the bag on the living room rug and ripped everything open. She ignored the yoghurt tub, usually she likes those. And had licked the smoked salmon wrapper clean, which had wiped it all over the rug. Of course the one chicken bone was no where to be found. It was very small so I'm keeping fingers crossed. :crossed:

I could not find a carpet steam cleaner for hire for love or money yesterday so I'm off to try to get one again today.
Not something I had planned for my Christmas break.
Tiggs is still recovering from the storm. Sure she didn't show stress, but it manifests itself in binge eating/food stealing. Hope the bone passes.

Okey-dokey...so what's Dazzle's excuse? No bad weather around here and yet lamb bone stolen from tall garbage can ON counter, whereupon she leaped over 32" gate to consume it in peace. No bad weather where Gar lives, in fact pretty local to us. No full moon. What IS their excuse? :lmt:

Face it: they're a bunch of fuzzy faced, big bottomed opportunists. ;-)

At least someone understands!! That Mad Dog is too smart, I mean cynical, yeah cynical, that's the word I wanted.
Love Tiggy :hearts:
So glad Gar is all right. :ghug: Amazing the things they can do when food is involved by stealth and cunning

Mim tiggy must of been in cahoots with Syd, christmas day, table set in the dinning room, all lovely, ready to bring in the platters of food, we sat down to eat and missing from the table was 2 bread rolls. Mr Oinker had while we were busy, snuffed that big black honker around the table and very gently took off the plates the rolls and very quietly stealthed into the family room and gobbled them down. When we sat down said to troy and laura, geez you guys were quick with the dinner rolls, they said what dinner rolls  On getting up and syd not in sight YEP he was enjoying VERY quietly a secret snack. He did not even knock over any of the wine glasses or move anything on the table to get to them

I think Syd has been secretly mentoring tiggy.   You know how fast he is with a chicken bone out of a rubbish bag. 8)
I'd probably steal a lamb bone too, doubtful I could jump the gate, though. fuzzy faced, big bottomed opportunists........yeah that's me too!

Nature has instilled a desire to live......unfortunately in sheepdogs it is Joie de vivre . Love of .........(fill in the blank--espec if it involves food). Opportunists......survival of the fittest or first come first served or your loss my gain. Some, not all, can test our patience.

If it wasn't for the trials, think how boring this forum would be. Long live sheepdogs!
wow that was some binge eating...makes my box of Thornton choccies looks small in comparison. scarey though...xx
fuzzy faced big bottomed opportunists

what a GREAT quote!

and apparently VERY true!!!

although C has kept his binging down to tp rolls, kleenex, cat litter
and the occasional crayon

I probably do need to hide the 10 lb bag of peanut butter cups I just
got from BJs though! :cow:
At least he did eat "safe" chocolates...more sugar and fat than actual chocolate danger.

Our chow hound is actually my son Travis's Min Pin...and he lives with Travis now
He is 12 now (Dino the dog) - Travis got him as a puppy when he himself was 12.

Many years ago, he climbed on the table and ate 1 one pound solid chocolate Santa.... and this is a 10 pound dog! 8O
It was in a sealed plastic wrap, also in Christmas wrap.

Little devil dog had some cardiac effects...but they were temporary thank goodness. He also was very nervous system stimulated, so I had him at home on safety watch in his covered crate to reduce stimuli. Better than the excitement of the vet office!

He also broke his leg as a puppy, got into a cactus face 1st, ate a poisoned mouse and got warfarin poisoned as a result...quite the interesting little dog!

I bet that peroxide and M&M's made a really pretty result....
Glad to hear Garfunkel made it through his binge ordeal okay!

Cindy
So far, Toby has eaten:

-one quarter of a six-layer Suicide by Chocolate cake
-a pan of brownies
-several loaves of bread
-a package of hot dog buns
-a plateful of assorted Christmas candies, all chocolate, foil wrappings included
-a package of 6 semi-frozen chicken drummettes, bones and all

This is what I can recall, I know there has been more. Not to mention during the puppy days, cell phones, remote controls, boxes and boxes of tissues, rolls of paper towels (why do they love paper?).

The chocolate cake and the chicken wings prompted calls to the vet, but otherwise we watch him closely for any effects. He seems to have a cast-iron stomach as he is never fazed by any of it.

Glad your baby's OK, too. It's scary, that's for sure.
Glad Garfunkel is ok. Had to be scary and to wake up to it is even worse!

We made it through this Christmas with very little food stolen-- with the worst being that Baley consumed a whole bowl of peppermint candy--probably about 25 to 30 pieces. No ill effects and his breath was great that day!

Good one, Karen 8)
