Oreo's first heat

Hello, oreo just turned one on the 21st and for her birthday she came in heat...lucky her. I have a few questions, how long does it last? Also once she no longer in heat, how long should i wait to have her spayed? She does look cute running around with little undies on..Thanks for your help. Sue

Happy Birthday to Oreo! :? :D

While all dogs are individuals, I would plan on 2-3 weeks. As it's her 1st heat, it can really be variable - think of it like a teenage girl....
And when she's done, give her a real nice bath to get rid of all the smells!

If she was my girl, I would wait a few months after she's done.
Our last intact female (Maggie, our coonhound) we had spayed quite close to coming out of heat, and feel the big tapering of hormones from heat and then a spay was hard on her. If I had a do-over, I would wait a couple months in between. :|

My daughter and son in law just had their 2 female dogs spayed (on the same day) and they were both 2-4 months past their 1st heats, and about 1.5 years old. They did wonderfully :D :D I got to check out their healing incisions on Christmas! :aww:
Hi, Sue.

Happy Belated Birthday, Oreo - you're a big girl now :-)

It varies quite a bit, anywhere from a couple of weeks till maybe 3 1/2. The first season seems to be a bit shorter than subsequent ones. Mind tend to come in for the first time at about a year old too.

Ideally you would spay roughly mid-way between seasons, and ON AVERAGE bitches come in every six months. Mind tend to be on the dot, but your milage may vary - I've heard of bitches who go anywhere from every 5 to every 9 months, and I'm sure there are greater varations than that too. My thought, and check with your vet, is that I would wait a couple of months after she comes out of season. That also puts you closer to the 15 mos mark, which is sort of a rule of thumb - again you don't know for sure short of x-rays, and I'm not recommending going to that length, it's not THAT important - for growth plates to have closed, which is one of the reasons to wait to spay anyway.

Mind you, I just had Sybil spayed a week ago and she was due to come into season again at the end of January. But she'll be 6 in April and so I have a long history of knowing when she comes in, plus she's always been very regular.

Thanks Dawn and Kristine....we will wait a few months before we get her spayed, thanks for all the info....
