Black to Grey

Hi
I was just wondering how old are oes when their fur changes to grey?
Bloo is 9 months and his tail is completely grey (I love the tail) and his back legs are grey, but his main black block is still black with a few strands of grey here and there. Will he eventually turn all grey? How long does it take?
thanks sam xx

Rule of thumb has always been at about a year old they'll change.

I know that our Zoey changed nearly overnight at right at one year. Caitlyn is now seven months and she's slowly starting to change. Her bum is going grey as is her back. Her legs are still mostly black but it's only a matter of time now.

It really can vary. 1 year is kind of an average for most.

If you check with your breeder, they will be able to give you some idea when their dogs tend to transition.

Here are littermates:
Chewie at 18 months showing at the OESCA Natioanls in 2007:

and sister Martha the same day:

And they are the 2 on the right at 2.5 years:
Martha in the middle, Chewie on the far right -

Chewie lost the last bits of his puppy coat at 2 yrs, 7 months (yes, I was counting the days!), and is a darker grey still. He was a slow bloomer in the coat department, but thankfully had a brain and was a great worker and team mate right through growing up! :aww:
He comes from a pretty slow maturing line, period. Though he was extreme ;-)

Hunter/Bond is actually starting to turn already at ten weeks if you sift through his coat 8O The girls are not. So even in litters there are differences. But you shouldn't be in the 2-3 year old range this time

It think it depends on the breed of the dog. Georgi is a brinkley & some of her grey coat has turned white but you can see the darker coat coming through. Some have darker coats than others. Would not worry about it. Just keep on top of the coat & get those fairy matts out & remember not to cut them out. Use a comb & fingers or you will change his name to patch
Carley still has a lot of black. She is much older than that.
It depends on the dog, Lily was pretty much all grey by 5 months old. She started greying at 3 months. I was soo sad! I wanted that nice fluffy puppy coat for so much longer. It doesn't take too long after they start and the coat transition can't be over soon enough!
Chap was always a very dark grey, even at almost 9 years old when he passed. He always looked like he was still in transition. Harley is 2 1/2 and she's very light grey, and was at 1 year when we rescued her. They're all so different!
THANKYOU!
I cannot wait to see his adult coat... the puppy coat is cute and nice but is a nightmare!! :high5:
When I got my first OES Mandy, she was about 9 weeks old. Her coat was aprx 2-2 1/2 inches long and about 1" was already silver. She was completely silver, verry very silver, long before she was a year old. When she was about 3 she started getting darker. She was the only one that happened to. Go figure, I guess they can really differ.

More like black to greys. Our girl has been so many shades, ranging from blackest black to most polished of silvers.

She started to change around 4 or 5 months; at around 9 months we shaved her down and she was entirely silver, and now at 1 year and 9 months, she's on her way to becoming a darker grey.

4-5 months.

1 year.

1 year, 8 months.
They don't all turn grey. This is Dexter's predecessor at about 12 years old.

Dexter just turned a year and is slowly turning grey from each end. His butt looks dusty as does one shoulder. His body is still pretty black with wisps of grey.
Our Sis, who died a week after her 14th birthday, never did get very gray. She had a few strands mixed in with the black. Our Ryleigh just turned one on October 1st and he is still black. He seems to shed more than Sis did too. Is that because he's losing his baby "down"?

???? is there a story here? Have I missed something? Chewie having a brother?

Oh Susan....

Yes, actually a nephew

January 14th is THE DAY!
George is ten weeks and if you part his black fur you'll see grey, almost anywhere on his coat!! He's got a grey patch on his tail and one of his eyes is pretty grey. His blacks feel slightly knotted when I brush him, I hope he's not transitioning already, like he'll let me give him a full brush out!! Still trying to eat the brush!!

Sounds like he is already. Some do transition that young. Lily did and was fully grey by 5 months. Those are the same exact spots that first went too. Broke my heart, i wish she would have had her puppy coat so much longer.
I remember when Simon lost his puppy fluff, he turned SILVER. Very light. Then when he got his final adult it was a darker gray.
