When do OES usually turn grey?

Because Momo has been losing her hair in little tuffs (I assumed because of the weather) - and little parts of her are starting to be a dark grey. 8O

Does the color change happen gradually? As in she will keep going shades of grey lighter until she is fully grown? I thought that they changed color all at once.

have been wondering the same thing
Tecumseh is turning grey fast! his eye patch is mostly grey, and the back of his back legs, and patches of grey on the body, and he is shedding like crazy at 14 weeks, but not little tufts
For whatever it means, Tucker has gone through several distinct color
changes. First when he blew his puppy coat he turned a light grey, then
at around 2 he got much darker grey, at 3 he had lots of almost black
areas in his silver, and now he has some white spots and some really
dark grey spots. But overall the grey has finally seemed to stop
changing and he is now 4. Zeke at 14 weeks is beginning to show some
grey close to the skin, but the black is not coming out yet.
I guess I didn't answer your question! Tucker only seems to have
stopped changing colors recently. Every time I shaved him he looked
different, but this last was less so than before.
If you can understand all that! Maybe it doesn't make sense, I must be tired!

There was a good thread on this that talked about the stages of color change but for some reason I can't find it now. I remember it distinctly because I was surprised to hear that OES change colors throughout their life!

Clyde is 8 months tomorrow and certain parts of his body have changed a lot-- particularly his face. He's gray underneath but his puppy hair on the ends is black so when the sun hits him, he looks a little brown! I'm surprised that you guys are noticing shedding and hair loss. I know the change for Clyde has been very gradual and, even when brushed (which is once about every three days now unless he looks particularly rough!) almost no hair comes out-- maybe half a handful for the whole dog and he's always been that way. Maybe it's the climate? I'm in Michigan and it really hasn't warmed up until the last week or so.
We didn't get Barney until he was 6 months old, but he was completely light grey (no sign of black) by then. He is now 8 months old and his coat has remained the same light colored grey since we got him. My parent's sheepdog I think turned grey a little later, like maybe 8-10 months old, and starting about a year ago (she is 7 now) she started getting dark fur patches on her.
So, not being an expert, just having been around sheepies my whole life, I think it depends on the dog...
I was reading several threads where other people's dogs were still black long after my Barney had already turned, so I was sondering if he was odd, but I think it is just up to the individual dog...
Tasker is 8 and seems to turn slightly grayer each year., One interesting thing was that last year he had a skin problem which caused him to lose some rather large clumps of hair (actually he chewed it off). When the hair grew back it came in black. It is now turning grey but is definately a different shade than the surrounding hair.
bob and missie are 10 months bob looks grey a bit more now hes been cliped but missie is still black with grey coming through
Jasper is 5 months old and he's still black.
Maybe you are right about the climate? I live in SC and even though we enjoy air conditioning and a fan inside and only go outside for long walks during the morning and evening when it's nice and cool - it might be effecting her shedding and blowing her coat sooner than others. :? She is only 10 days past her third month and this is already happening... very weird.
PANDA STARTED GOING GREY AT ABOUT 6 MONTHS..SHE IS 18 MONTHS AND NOW SHE IS A LIGHT GREY EXECPT FOR UNDER HER FRONT UNDER ARMS....SHE IS STILL BLACK THERE....
Hmmm, climate....that is interesting. I am in Virginia, where it hasn't really been too hot yet (although today is nice at about 80!) and Barney lived his first 5 months in California, but during the winter, so it wasn't too hot there...I don't know.
Wow! Barney's really gray for such a young guy! My avatar is Clyde at 5 1/2 months and he still pretty much looks like that 2 months later. A little more gray on the face but that's it. Do you have more pics of Barney?
I dunno about the climate. I'm in Mississippi, and it's already hit 90 here a couple of times. Right now, it's 84 and we had a "cold" front push through yesterday. It's supposed to be in the upper 80s/low 90s the rest of the week...cooling down to upper 70s on Saturday. I'm outside with my boys a lot, and Jasper is usually outside with us now. In the house, we keep the thermostat at 70 year round. We didn't have much of a winter here though (our grass was still mostly green all winter), so maybe he's gotten used to warmer temps in his 3 months in the South :) ...or maybe he's just going to be a darker sheepie even though his parents are gray?

I've been waiting on his coat to change, but nothing so far.
GAIL, I HAVE TO SAY THAT JASPER HAS THE COOLEST COLORING IVE EVER SEEN...ARE ALL FOUR PAWS WHITE? HE IS ADORABLE...I CANT GET A PICTURE OF PANDA ON BECAUSE MY PICTURES ARE TOO LARGE.. DO YOU KNOW HOW TO MAKE THE PICTURES SMALLER OFF THE DISK?

Thanks :) Yeah, all four paws are white. His name was almost Socks or Boots (my boys LOVE Dora). Those names were way up there on our name list. :)

The way I shrink my pictures is by using Adobe Photoshop. I just reduce the size by 50% twice. That usually makes them small enough. We have an 8 MP digi camera, so our pics made need shrunk down more than most because of the file size.

Another way that is a little easier, but takes more time with loading the picture, is to upload it to somewhere like Shutterfly or Photobucket. Shutterfly automatically shrinks the picture, and when you view the picture, you can hit the right mouse button and save the picture. In Photobucket, you can edit the picture and reduce the size of it.

Hope that helps! If not, you can e-mail me the picture (gailatmsu@myfamily.com), and I'll reduce the size and e-mail it back to you. :)

Are you using a newer version of Photoshop? Even easier is to just use the save for Web option when you go to save and you can pick your jpeg size option: low, med, high, very high, maximum. For Web you can almost always pick low and it still looks good and the file size is really small. However, that won't physically resize it, like if it's 8x10, and you want it 2x4, you should manually size it first, then save for Web.

Lol. I feel like I'm at work. It's what I do for a living so it just comes out of my mouth when i hear Photoshop and resizing. Just some suggestions: I swear I'm not trying to be a know-it-all!

Not sure...it's 7.0 Professional. He just ordered CS2 (I think that's the name of it?). He's ready to get that program in. :)

The 50% reduction thing is actually using PhotoImpression. Sorry about that! We have so many photo editing programs, I get them confused. Can you tell what my hubby's hobby is? LOL

PhotoShop makes a bunch of different versions to make it more annoying too! Well, actually, just apply that when you get CS v2 because it most definitely works there-- that's the exact version I use!

It's an addictive hobby too because you can do so many things with those programs! Have you ever looked at deviantart.com? It's amazing what people can do with Photoshop and some time!
I've just started "trying" to use photoshop for more than basic resizing of pictures....... UGH!!!!
Hey ButtersStotch,
I've been trying to put some more pictures up, but for some reason it hasn't really worked. I have a few in the albums, I think one is called Barney in the backyard, Barney lounging, and Barney going downstairs. Those are all pictures of him pretty soon after we got him at 6 months, so he did turn grey really young. I wish I had a picture of him as a little black and white puppy because I can't even imagine him like that!
I think you just have to be patiebnt and wait for me to approve them! I found three more today.

Now you need to go and find them (yours seem to be on page 6 of the 1st antic album) and copy and paste the "Forum BBCode" that I've provided in the file info section into any post here, and.... 'voila' !

Let me know if you need help. I'm a graphic designer and I've worked with almost every version of Photoshop. There's some easy tricks to resize. Feel free to Pm me if you like.

Well - yesterday I saw silvery strands of hair cropping up on her dark fur while I was bathing her. 8O The water made it much easier to see it - now I am noticing it when she is dry. She still has those chunks of very dark grey fur springing up - the silver strands seems to be poking out of those patches... it's too weird. The grey is so dark I don't think it will show up if I took a pic - and the silver strands are so few I don't think it would show up either... it would be kinda neat if I was able to be able to show it to you though.
Pepsi is now 16 mos old and for the most part still black. I think he may be a Blue Merle.
He does have a bit of light gray on him in the form of a triangle right above his belly. It goes from the white hair into the black. It's actually really neat. The color has been like this in this spot since I got him at 11 mos.

Sasha is starting to turn grey at the roots of her hair it looks like a dye job that needs re touching.LOL. her legs are white and her face is white with black eyes. I live in Alberta where it has been warm to cool so I don't know if the climate is a factor for her as it does'nt get very hot here.
Dancer is all grey and white now, with black and white hairs within the grey, she is 17 months old, but has been shaved down, so that eliminates all the puppy coat anyway. Sky is 11 months old and is only starting to grey on her hind legs and belly. It seems to be working its way up though...lol....
Hendrix just turned 4 months on May 18th. He's gradually turning gray on his face. I have noticed grey coming out of the roots of the rest of his hair and his hind legs. The breeder we got him from said he should be grey all over come 6 months.
