saga of the mites

I wasn't sure where to post this but wanted to thank everyone for their input about Bella's unwanted guests......the beastly mites

After that initial ivermectin injection and my meltdown for being a dumb mom I spoke with the lab director in Washington about doing the gene testing on Bella. The results weren't going to be back in time and after speaking with her I didn't want to take any risks. In the meantime I ordered the Defendex and got the special buy 3 get 2 free deal since I wasn't sure how long it was going to take to get rid of these bugs.

I also searched and found a homeopathic recipe on line which is good for mites (both types) and fleas. It was 1 cup hydrogen peroxide, 2 cups water and 3 tablespoons Borax. Wash the dog and then spray with this mixture. DON'T RINSE and let AIR DRY. recommended every 2-3 days.

So Bella got a little trim, wash with Defendex and followed by the Borax solution every other day. We did this after that first shot and just had our first followup on Thursday (2 weeks after first visit). The vet was impressed with how things were improving.

SO the final tally so far for these nasty guests....

1. Ivermectin shot $16.....major headache and panic endless calls to Washington and then finally realizing that there is a time difference that was why no one was calling me right back 8O

2. Defendex shampoo $81

3. Borax solution $ 5

4. Interceptor for 2 weeks $500

5. New vacuum $430....mine died as I was vacuuming everything in site for the gazillion time

6. Flea/mite powder for carpets $30

Final tally over $1000 so far and I am hoping the vet says she only needs another 2 weeks of the Interceptor when we go back.

So everyone help me chant DIE MITES DIE, DIE MITES DIE, DIE MITES DIE :excited: :excited: :excited:

So glad to hear Bella's unwanted guest condition is improving. Just wanted to add that should you need another round of Interceptor (just to make sure they are completely killed) you can order it online and it is a lot cheaper than getting it at the vet. Check to see if your vet will do that for you. My vet was sympathatic to me for I was treating all my 4 dogs and 3 cats. 8O 8O So after the first round of interceptor ordered through their office, they agreed to let me order the second round at PetcareRX.com. The website contacted my vet directly for presciption and shipped the pills to me the same day.

Good luck!!! And go get them all :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
I swear by Dimantaceous Earth (sp?)

It started when my garage roof was ripped down and to my horror and that of the workman up there at the time. Carpenter Ants. I know kinda off topic here but hear me out. I looked online and saw that these types of ants were extremely hard to get rid of as they also had sattelite nest besides the "mother nest" . Ewwwww. Traditional ant killers don't work with these types of ants. Well since I was having the roof ripped off....we also discovered the three other satellite nest but for most that would be impossible as no one rips down their roof unless they have to. Okay so ripping down the roof was what we were doing at the time, so we got rid of ours but from what I learned online the only thing that works to get rid of them was Dimantaceous Earth, according to one scientist that studies these types of ants.

I found out that these types of ants like to nest in decaying wood and given a chance may head back to the home nest (which was now gone) but in the summer I saw these giant black ants heading towards my home. I spread the powder on their route and it stopped them. According to websites it's 100% natural and people show this by digesting it on You Tube vids to show it's safety. It works for all kinds of bugs.

Recently those poor abused/neglected chickens I acquired were covered with vermin....ewwwww! Mites and Lice.
From all the knowledable websites I visited on chicken care it mentioned DE and so I purchased a fansionista plastic poncho and covered the hens with the stuff. It worked!!!!!!! No bugs exist on my girls any longer.

I then tried it out on the bunnies and guinea pigs as preventative care as I've only used Invermectin in the past. No bugs found on my babies.

I then used it on the cats and sprinkled some on my carpets as remember this stuff is 100% safe for humans and pets. I did this also for preventative care as I had brought in one of the chickens in my home as wanted to be sure I hadn't put my other animals at risk.

I had purchased a small bottle of the stuff at Home Depot for 10 dollars but later saw you can buy bags full of this stuff at any Farm Surplus store for aprox 20 dollars. I'm sold on the stuff and will continue to use it periodically.

You can powder the animals and yet not worry about toxins, you can spread it on your carpets and leave some in your vaccuum bag. So it has many uses and I'm sold on the stuff.

Hope you get rid of the Mites and good luck!

Marianne
I've heard good things about DE also.... for fleas and ticks I believe. Never used it myself... but hey, thought I add my 2 cents!

:D
Well it's always good to add a penny or in your case 2 cents (due to inflation) for your thoughts!

Yup, you're right about fleas and any other bugs as apparently they hate the stuff and stay far away from it as apparently they have trouble walking on it and will leave asap and your pets are kept bug free. Works great apparently too for gardeners who don't want to use toxins that may harm plants or animals.
