Natural Ear wash

There was a "recipe" on the forum once a while back...natural ear cleansing recipe with boric acid I believe...Anyone have it?

Also, is there any brand of ear cleaner and powder you recommend?

It probably was Blue Power. We use it with our basset rescue a lot. Here's a link:

There was one Willowsprite (I think?) put up a few years
ago. I think there was something like gentian violet in it.
I think it's something you can get by asking the pharmasist.
I never did try it, but I remember a few people here saying it
was great for them. You just have to be careful because it can
stain.
If it wasn't Stacy I'm sure she will remember who it was. Her
memory is probably better than mine.

That's the one I posted the link to above
Here's what they look like if you're searching at the pharmacy.
The gentian violet is over the counter but often on the pharmacists' shelves so you need to ask for it.
I was told by our old vet to use witch hazel because squirting isopropanol into the ears may damage their eyes.

Dawn, close but not the one.
I'm at home now (was at work and searched online for the previous one) - this is the one I have: - it's a derivative from the For The Animals one - has witch hazel instead of the alcohol.

16 oz witch hazel
4T boric acid powder
16 drops gentian violet sol'n 1%

Shake before using. Use as a regular ear cleaner.
The gentian violet can stain, so use outdoors or in an area you can wipe up.
Our basset rescue sells it as a kit as a fund raiser - 16 oz of witch hazel, 6 oz boric acid powder and 30ml of G.V. for $25.
Thanks...yes I think it was the one with the witch hazel. I try not to ues alcohol as I believe it can burn? Thanks!

Yes, the alcohol will burn if there are any areas with open skin. :(
The witch hazel is much kinder! It is used after human childbirth to "sooth" and cleanse...
Will the gentian violet stain the dogs' ears? Maybe a silly question, but I am looking for something for Sophie's ears. They get really awful really, really fast.

It will stain if you drop gentian violet directly on to the skin but if you diluted into the mixture as written above, the purple solution should not stain.

Best would be to do it during a bath. If the hair is wet 1st (around the ears, etc.), then you rinse it after she shakes, you'll be fine.

If you did it with dry hair and just left it, she may have a lavender tint for a bit. But not that bad.
Thanks, this sounds like a great idea.

Is it too drying? I live in MN so the air tends to be pretty dry all winter. Don't want start a different kind of problem.

  Well, seeing I'm in MN too, that would be a no.
This recipe came to us from a basset breeder in WI too.
I'm too lazy to get up and read the bottle right now, but I believe that the Mystic Ear wash from Chris Christensen is alcohol-free. I know it's really gentle. It has almost no smell, unlike most other ear cleaners that I've used and I've gotten it on my hands where I have eczema and it didn't burn at all.
