Blood from his boy bits?!

I saw patches of blood on the floor and when I turned Ru over, there was blood over his tummy. I put Ru in the bath & washed his tummy and beard (I think he had been licking at it) and dried it. I could see a little patch where he had been pulling hair out so I thought the blood had come from that, so I trimmed all the hair in that area back and couldn't see any sign of blood. I let him out to go toilet, he had pee and the blood was back. I've just washed him off again and there is no sign of blood again. I'm going to try to get money together to take him to the vets. Any ideas what this could be or any advice of what I can do in the meantime? :( Is there a way to... er... look at his boy bits? :?

cassie,
ru does need to go to the vets, but it can be just an infection that can be cleared up with antibiotics.

Canine blood in urine is a sign of an underlying illness in your pet. Often along with blood in the urine other symptoms such as frequent urination and difficulty urinating are present. A thorough physical exam along with a urine analysis will determine the cause of blood in the urine.

Causes of Canine Blood in Urine
Urinary tract infection
Bacterial infection in the kidney (Pyelonephritis)
Kidney stones
Prostrate inflammation (Prostatitis)
Bladder inflammation (Cystitis)

If you notice blood in your dog's urine, immediately take your dog to the vet to find out the cause. Kidney stones can be surgically removed if medication doesn't work. The vet will recommend a special diet for your dog. Make sure your dog drinks plenty of water. If the pet is suffering from tumors, surgical removal might be necessary. If infections are not too serious the vet might put the dog on a course of antibiotics. Prostate problems can be treated and often, castration brings relief. Some dog breeds such as Miniature schnauzers and Dalmatians have a higher risk of developing kidney stone than other breeds
He just ate some breakfast, and blood started dripping out as he was eating. Is that normal with an infection? I'm going to the vets tomorrow.
Oh Cassie poor Ru, and poor you. I bet you are worried. I am sure the vet will sort him out it sounds like a urinary infection....fingers crossed for Ru....xxxxx
Years ago my Winston had that - he had prostatis that was cured by way of neutering. Is Ru still intact?

:cow: Ru is not neutered. It really doesn't look like it's in the urine, it looks like just blood dripping out.
Not to be gross, but did he cut himself on something, or did he chew on himself, or lick himself raw?
I kind of thought he might have cut himself, or maybe even the cat got him under there somehow. I've looked as best I can, I can't see any signs of blood when he's resting, but his male parts are kind of inside all the time so I don't know if he managed to cut himself.
Let us know how he gets on at the vet. :ghug:
a kidney stone can knick the urethra, but still best to vet him promptly. :(
We have been to the Vets tonight, she couldn't get to his penis because of the swelling. She took his temperature which was normal, he has no other signs of illness just the blood. She gave him an injection to reduce the swelling overnight and said he's not allowed food before we go back in the morning in case she needs to sedate him to see what's going on. Oh, and I took a urine sample, she said there was blood in the urine. I wish I had asked how she knew it was not just coming out at the same time. I'll ask tomorrow.
try not to worry, they will sort him out tomorrow..xx
Poor Ru...get better soon.
Poor Ru :(

Did she say why it was too swollen? has he been licking at it?
Poor baby keep us up to date, wondering if it might be a grass seed in his sheath, they'll know more when the swelling susbsides and the vet can examine it better.

Does not sound like an infection like a UTI because his temp is normal or kidney stones as displaying no signs of being in pain.

Keeping fingers crossed and would not be the first time I've heard of blood coming from there in a dog, neutered or not, culprit was a grass seed.

Hoping you find out soon, hugs for you and Ru. :ghug:
Sounds like a good possibility Lisa - it's the right season for it and Ru's otherwise healthy and feeling fine.

Good luck tomorrow! :hearts: :hearts:
Oooh... ouch... poor buddy. :(
Hoping Ru rests easy tonight.
Good luck at the vet tomorrow.
I had to leave Ru at the vets to be sedated so she can figure out what's going on. I'm such a mess. He's never been sedated before and I've never left him anywhere other than home

I have to call back in 4 hours to see if he's ready to pick up. I'm trying to keep busy.. this is going to be the longest 4 hours ever :(
hang in there. probably much harder on you than on him. and believe me I know. my 2 legged boy has had more anesthesia than I can count and done fine every single time.

hoping for the best

keep us posted
Update- Ru is back from the vets. She still couldn't see anything, no cuts or anything stuck in there. She asked if he had been mated recently, of course he hasn't, and asked if he does any humping, which he doesn't really. She said she thinks its an infection which is either on his penis which apparently looks sore or around the area. I have a feeling Greebo the cat must have caught him with a claw and it's become infected. She has given me more anti-inflammatory and painkiller to go on his food and continue with the antibiotics. We have to go back on Monday evening for a check-up, if it's not cleared by then, she wants to run more tests. I'm just so happy he's home. He's very drowsy, he's sleeping and hasn't had a drink or anything yet.

Ru says THANK YOU to everyone for helping mummy through this

Feel better soon, Ru! :hearts: :ghug: :hearts:

Glad he is home--poor guy! :ghug:
Get well soon Ru, sorry you're going through this! :ghug:
Rufus had a very drowsy evening and slept well through the night. He's almost back to his normal self today, pestering the cat etc. He had all his toilets as normal on his short walk, he's in play mode at the moment! He is still swollen and whines when he's not distracted so I think he still has discomfort/ pain. He's eaten a tiny bit and is drinking as normal at last!! I just hope the swelling goes by Monday so he doesn't need more tests :(

I cannot express how much I appreciate your posts. It's SO good to know I'm not alone :ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
Poor old Ru

Sorry he's been poorly.
Update- Just got back from the vets with Ru for his check-up. It seems he's getting better, the swelling has gone down but there is still skin kind of twisting inwards so I need to keep an eye on that. The vet said continue with the antibiotics. There is an operation he can have to fix the inward twisting of skin, so that might be an option in the future.

Ru sends big sheepie kisses to everyone
So glad things are going better and Ru is getting improvement!! :cheer:
great news he is doing better
good old Ru....xxx :wag:
