2 Males, 2 Females or Mix?

Dexter is almost a year old. We we intend to get another OES puppy sometime in the next year, or so. He has such a great temperment one thought is to wait and get one of his puppies. We aren't going to rush into anything so have time.

The question is whether to get another male or a female. Our first OES was a female and definitely the second mother in the family. Our next OES was a male with a lot of the personality traits Dexter has.

Dexter will probably be neutered by the time it becomes an issue with our new dog (don't tell him, he has big plans!).

We bred our female once and do not intend to ever go through that again so breeding a female is not a concern.

Each sex has its own special attribute as well as all the things we all love about OES.

I am curious about opinions on the sex mix of a 2 OES household.

I always suggest 1 of each to families that do not have a lot of experience with multiple dogs. The male almost always let's the female run the show.
Logical; why should canines be different from humans?

Thanks.
I went with one male and one female. The male is older and 110 pounds...the "baby" just turned three and is 78 pounds...Guess who rules the roost? Yup, the female! They are both neutered/spayed so no mistakes happen :cow:
One of of each or two males. My guys have always been best buds, mellow, goofy and play off each other's silliness. I like the male personality better as they "stroke my ego" whereas the females "test" me. I love them both and fondly remember the "the house of 7 dogs" here, it was a party!
I have only 1 OES who is a female. I also have 2 Aussies who are female as well and they don't have any issues between them. Violet is the oldest so pretty much runs the show. The Aussies hang together more...but they are also related, Aunt and niece, I don't know if that makes any difference. I really don't think it is the sex of the animal, I think it has more to do with the personality.
If I get a 2nd OES, it will be female, all girls for me! :D
I am torn I love both. Celyn our previous and much missed OES was a lovely girly but a real Alpha matriarch. She and I had many long chats as to who was the boss. Cloud our lovely 4 month pup is a great handsome boy and very affectionate and a total scamp. I just love them both boys and the girls. They are all clowns! xx
Most of the time the female will be the boss. 8)

We have 5 males and one female. Even though she came at 1.5 yrs old and was a rescue who never had seen a house....she caught on really quick and rules. :roses:

Generally, most troubles come with the female/female combination. Better odds are the male/male or one of each.
Of course there are exceptions, those are just the averages....
I have two males and they love each other. I've said this before, a female dog is called a bitch for a reason. My last two dogs were both males also. I know Simon would have a problem with a female try to take over our household. He (thinks) he is the king here.
I love girls and I love boys. I have two girls and one boy - best of both. Both sexes are stubborn, loveable. I think it comes down to personal preference and what would suit your home life better.

We had the Italian Market at our locak town centre - so I took Esher to socialise her and Lincoln along for the ride. Its something I always do with puppies take them to the local market so they get used to crowds, people touching them, loud noises, children especially when they are shown. Takes all day to move from one stall to another but they do bring out the smiles in everyone. Anyhow my point, everyone fell in love with Lincoln and Esher, they wanted to take them home and in fact the meat stall ended up giving Lincoln and Esher some meat fat because it was cold!
Dexter's mom read these posts and said she votes for another male. Until she read these she forgot that sometimes our female, Beth, made HER feel like the second Mom!

She may also feel pretty special being the only lady in the house, Dex puts her to bed every night, gets up with her every morning, grooms easier with her, eats for her, etc. She babies him but he very obviously acknowledges her as the Alpha female.
so is Dexter a stud muffin? and you would wait to get one of his future kids? it would be great really knowing at least half of the personality personally :D

IF?
I've had 1girl 1boy, 2girls 1boy, right now I have 2boys and 1girl. I've had more dog fights between boy and girl than same sex fights. Actually never between same sex.
I have only 1 female OES though, she isn't motherly at all. Shes a ruff and tumble, happy go lucky tomboy/princess.
