all black

We are currently looking for a sheepdog puppy. We found a breeder that has a puppy that is all black except a small line on her belly. We were wondering if this is normal (or maybe it is even sought after) as we have not seen many without a mostly white head.

It doesn't sound like a purebred oes, is this from a reputable breeder? Registered, a member of the AKC or CKC, as well as a national breed club? Do they have proof of health certifications, hips, eyes, heart, thyroid? At the very least hips anyway.....
I would suggest you contact Tarja Peters, the breeder referral person for the Old English Sheepdog Club of America. She can be reached at oescrazy2@yahoo.com
Guest: do all the puppies look like that one or do they have mostly white heads? I have to admit that I've never seen one like that. In fact, out of all the pictures I've seen on this site, I think my Clyde might have the most color on his face out of all the sheepies!
Take a look in pictures, John Arnold has pictures of pure OES puppies. You can see them as new borns on the title St Partrick Day Parade...pg4 I think.

Most likely you are looking at a cross or a mutt (unknown mix).
Hi everyone,

Markings on an OES can be almost anyway they come as long as the colors are correct according to the standard. The Imported Unesta Pim, one of the most famous OES in the US and in many US pedigrees going way back, had very little white on him and just a small amount for a shawl. Ideal Weather, some claim to be the finest OES of all time was mostly black as well. Jane Collin of Barkshire OES who won at Crufts last year and in my eyes has some of the finest OES ever produced in the US had one of her younger OES displayed and features in the OESCA magazine Old English Times last month. This OES was a young, mostly black OES she named Barkshire's Shadow of a Doubt. He looked wonderful! I have a female puppy that is very simular to hers with me now that is mostly black. She just has a cross of white on her chest, white only on the back of her front legs, a small white shawl with black on the sides and white tipped paws. She does have white across her muzzle and a strip of white down the center of her head. She probably has the greatest structure and temperment of any OES I have produced with just a wonderful warm and charming personality. I promise you, every one of these was well bred.

As with any puppy, all the suggestions mentioned of checking out the breeder are a great idea but I wouldn't assume anything until that is done.

Good luck with your quest for a nice puppy!

Zach, both Unnesta Pim and Ideal Weather are in my girls pedigrees... :)
That girl of yours is absolutely gorgeous, I have been in love with that type of pattern ever since I saw Jasper!
If my girls ever produced a pup with structure, temperment and markings as great as that pup of yours I would definitely keep it, I wouldn't be able to part with it I know!
Who you kidding WS, your dogs are just wonderful! And I love your website by the way!

I purchased my oes pup from a Louisianna breeder she looke quite "traditional" with blue eyes. However, one of her littermates looked like a spotted cow (all white with black spots)!! So adorable, but definitely an OES--checked linneage and everthing.

PS I can't figure out how to view the pics of these unique oes' your talking about!!
One of my first OES was all black with one white paw and he was pure bred.
Hi Sixpence,

So sorry about Dylon.

Zach
Great new avatar Zach :D
Hi Holly,

Thanks, CueTp and Tuxedo, I miss them so much already. Maggie McGee IV has our Nelson Jr. I think she is spoiling him to much!!! I know he's taking advantage of her.

Someone walking in the fine Michigan weather up there? I'm surprised your avatar doesn't have a zip suite on lols. Which beautiful one is that?

I saw your pic posts and really enjoyed them. They look so familiar!

Cute names :D This one is Beau. I feel bad if they don't get equal time.
Since everyone else has new avatars... :)
Clyde's looking very handsome :D If he were older I think Daisy would be interested.
Hee hee. Clyde's lost his "interest," if you know what I mean ;)

Check out the size of his head. If the camera weren't full, I was going to take some pictures of Clyde helping us install our new patio today, which involved eating about 10 pounds of dirt and walking through every time we levelled something! He and Lucy are filthy, but soooo happy!
Daisy would nag him to death anyway :D It looks like his hair is growing out nicely :D and what's wrong with his head? I only saw one so that seems right
Lol. Nothing's wrong with it-- it's just huge. Maybe James and I just have small heads or something :)

His hair is growing out well. It's much longer than that now. I can't wait until I can pull it back again!
Maybe the large head problem is the photographers fault
Naw, it's even bigger in person!
