fur baby questions....Cambridge

hey all

so.... if our puppies are hot all the time (wanting cool places to lie down)

1- will shaving them make them cooler? or no, because their coat has great insulation?

2- what age can they be shaved? any, or is it recommended to wait until like 6 mo?

3- how often do you all clip nails?

4- what product do you recommend to wipe eyes?

TIA!!!

...still IN LOVE with my boy! and he is SO smart!! :go:

Puppies tend to pant and breathe heavier than their adult counterparts.
And in NC, I'm sure there is more warmth than in OH - but they do acclimate. We have many forum members and I know other people there, who keep their dogs in full coat. We are coming into winter, so cooler weather WILL get here eventually. :D

Most people I know wait until the dreaded coat transition to shave/trim if they are going to do it. There is a pretty wide range of age - your breeder would be able to tell you when to expect it. It's usually a bit before 1 year old - but could be as young as 6 months old.

Nails - for little ones, just whenever the sharp edges are noticed. Weekly if you really are on top of it.
For adults - I aim for 2 weeks for all my dogs. Exceptions are Maggie the coonhound who needs nails to hunt (ie: climb trees 8) ) and when Chewie is doing weight pull - he needs longer nails for traction on the loop carpet they pull on. But need really short for therapy dog visits and agility - so trimming on him is really a wide spectrum. Adult OES nails are pretty big (match those feet)...but not near as wide and thick as the bassets.

Tears - sometimes seen in OES puppies, but it's not an issue at all as they get a bit older and adults. It just doesn't happen in this breed - and not like poodles for sure. :high5: It would be highly unusual actually if they had it after little puppyhood.
They get eye buggers, but that's about it.
Puppies are still developing. As kids they do tend to hyper ventilate more, but then their little bodies are going through some major changes in a short time.......it takes energy which ventilation cools. At times he'll want to find a cool spot, others he'll love the sun on his belly. I would not shave a pup! When the dreaded coat change comes.......you'll know, they mat if you look cross eyed at them, then consider a clip down.

Nails, start now! The more you fool around with his feet, tipping the sharp points off, the more trusting he'll become with is feet being manipulated. That will come in handy when those nails are as thicker!

Eye buggers.......we get them, the dogs get them. The exception is I don't want to eat mine, but most of my dogs claim them back, "Hey, that came from me, give it back!" I find a finger nail works the best on the hard crusties, a tissue on the fresh ones. I've only see a few pups with the brown stain from their eye........I hope yours won't be one. There are special wipes for those problems.

Also remember to keep the poop shoot open, just another little housekeeping chore. Brush his teeth daily, swab the ears weekly, kiss the nose daily!

Thought my husband was the only one to use the term "poop shoot" regarding the dog!
bahahahahaha! poop shoot! :excited:

we went to the groomer 2 days after bringing him home and had that shaved,
as he was already getting poop stuck in his hair

so, let me re-ask my question, as I think I didn't clarify enough

I WANT so much, for Cambridge to sleep with me in bed. Everyone says
their sheepies are too hot to do that. Most prefer tile, the floor, AC ducts, etc...

so.... does the coat length affect hot/cold etc? most people shave their poodles
in the summer. half the groomers say it makes them hotter, as they don't have
the natural insulation in their coats then....

also- I'm confused. I thought I saw a bunch on pics on the site of like 4 month old
pups that had short hair. did those people just shave early?

and WHAT in the world is this coat transition thing? first I've heard of it!!!

now I'm scared! :twitch:

Cambridge so far doesn't mind feet or ears or anything messed with. I purposely
play and touch everything a LOT to desensitize to those areas.

I bought a comb and am combing him to start good habits there too.

AND wiping his drippy mouth after drinking, LOL

right now he is SOUND asleep on our marble fire surround.

my favorite puppy part? his sweet paw bottoms.... with the black spots
on his pink pads. just tickles me!

I believe the technical term is poop chute, if you're gonna be picky about it, but, yes, apparently it is a generally accepted term in our breed ;-)

ah, can't believe I didn't catch that. :-) we don't shoot poop. :yay:
Coat transition: call breeder and ask her (him?) to explain what it is and how she/he handles it. Also (because we can explain it to you, but this is where your breeder comes in) when dogs in his/her line tend to go through coat changes and how bad he/she expects it to get (this will vary somewhat based on coat type)

Cambridge doesn't have much hair so I don't know that shaving would make much of a difference - I'd be saving that up for the big coat change too (you'll know when it happens, you drop the brush in tears, throw up your hands, and call the groomer, bawling, that even though you groom the dog every two hours the mats are multiplying like bunnies and please shave dog to the skin - groomer will be happy to oblige) but one thing you can do to promote coolness right now is have groomer shave his belly.

I have dogs who love sleeping on the bed with me so much they will sleep there even in full coat on all except the hottest nights (before I give in and turn A/C on), and others who could be bald and wouldn't be caught dead sleeping on a bed. The dedicated bed sleepers will often sleep upside down if hot.

Caution though: Now is too early to allow bed sleeping. For one thing, he's not housebroken. Nor will he be truly reliable for months. For another, this is a breed that WILL take advantage of their owners. Right now, while he's small, is a good time to kindly establish who is the boss, by setting clear and fair boundaries.

Yeah, I know you think he's adorable. All puppies are adorable. In OES this is especially important because if they weren't adorably most of them wouldn't live to see their first birthday, never mind their second. Just don't let him use that to convince himself that he's owns the place and you work for HIM.

No, we don't shoot poop, but a really bad case of the squirts can have impressive long range capabilities ;-)

Rare, thankfully, but poop shooting is not completely out of the question. 8)

You got all the advice you need on everything but, just wanted to share Finn had tear staining and we just trimmed a little at a time as it grew out and it grew out fine!
The foster pups I have now a few have the same so, we have the same plan for them!
At 8 weeks

About 6 mos...not the best but, you can pretty much tell they are gone
He can sleep in the bed when he gets older. For now, as a pup, he should be sleeping in your room with you, but in a crate. If he's hot, keep the crate free of heavy blankets and other comfy things us humans think are super comfy! Mine would kick all that comfy blanket stuff around and sleep on the cold crate pan!

And the eyes...don't worry about the reddish marks under the eyes as a puppy. Don't use anything really - could be too harsh. Just leave as is. It will go away on its own....Be very careful of anything you use near the eyes...Just don't worry about it. It worries us as humans but its a natural thing and will go away as the pup gets older...Try not to use anything to whiten it up at this point...
I know it's too early to sleep together- :-) just was reading all the posts
about how so many don't even want to sleep in bed- it's just that the OES
size was one of the reasons I wanted him.... someone big to snuggle with!

My autistic son still wets the bed, even through his pull ups, so believe me I
don't want to create more laundry - or bad habits- for that matter.

I hope we don't get hershey squirts here anytime soon. Wouldn't be fun to
clean off puppy fur!
good to know about the eyes.... I just figured ALL white dogs had staining issues. he doesn't yet,
just thought it was going to be a sure thing.

that's good! :phew:

I love his laid-backness. I just got the comb, started on his back and he immediately
lays down and lets me do his whole body

I don't think I could love this little ball of fur any more.
:hearts:

I'll email the breeder about the coat thing. Just had never heard of it before today.

I email her like 4 times a day telling her how great C is. She may disconnect her
email address soon!
My Tonks gets REALLY warm- loves to sleep on the air conditioning vent on the floor. But she'll still hop in bed with me to cuddle every night, and she gets down after a while to sleep on her vent. Sometimes she gets down after a few minutes, sometimes I fall asleep with her still cuddling. I wouldn't worry about it too much- each dog is different, and each dog will decide what they want. Luna used to sleep in bed, and then she stopped doing it. Just the last month or so she's been getting in bed too- and now I have her AND Tonks in bed, along with the 2 cats. I have a hard time finding space some nights!
wondering if anyone has tried the "chillo" pillow or anything for their warm bodied friends.

if you have, let me know- wonder if it's something they would like. (the things I think
about when I can't sleep!) :headbang:
I tried something called the cool bed or something... you fill it with water and it does stay kind of cool but my silly boy wouldn't lay on it. Then we had a poop shoot and somehow it got covered.. I disinfected the darn thing, bleached it, hosed it... but it was still stained.. and stinky :twitch: I decided to bin it, worst £100 I have ever spent but I have heard some people like it.
