Horrified by Dexters behavior this morning....

I want to start off by saying Dexter is the sweetest dog ever. I know every owner says that, but compared to my Boston Terrier, Dexter is dopey, lopey, goofy and I can take him to the dog park without problems. He never barks or growls at anything and at the park avoids fights..when other dogs get into a tiff, he runs towards me, or the other side of the park to get away from it.

So this morning, he took off after a dog as she came into the park. It was a snow white, small-ish albino aussie. He grabbed her by the neck and brought her to the ground. She would pop back up and run (she was young and very playful) and he would take her down again. It was not play either, he was serious. He would get up on her back and grab her neck and drop her to the ground. When she would run he would go after her and overpower her again. He is neutered, and he was not trying to hump, he just kept bringing her down. He even growled a little which I have never heard him do. The owner was very understanding and said its ok, they are dogs, but I had to hold Dexters collar and he strained and fought to get after this dog again.

So what happened? Did he think it was a goat? The dog was pure white and had weird blue eyes. The owner said she was deaf and blind in one eye.

My question is, do sheepies have it ingrained in them to go after things that just look like sheep/goats? Or was it because he saw her as a "weak" link in the pack? I have no idea, but the way he went after this dog, I have never seen him be that aggressive and I was so unnerved we just left the park. I don't want him to be like this, and I am trying to understand why he just FREAKED out with this dog. I have never had to leave the dog park because of his behavior before.

It sounds like that aussie wasn't an albino (which has no pigmentation) but a double merle or "lethal white" aussie. It's really sad that people breed them. Here is some info
http://www.lethalwhites.com/albino.html
It's possible that your dog thought that this dog was a weak link or maybe because the dog is deaf and almost blind it didn't act like a dog. (a lot of dogs act that way towards OES because they don't look like dogs).

If it only has happened once, I wouldn't really worry about it.
I read that link, interesting thank you. So it was not an albino..which makes sense because his eyes were light crystal blue but the one eye she was blind in the pupil was like a pinpoint. I had never seen a dog so white before, without any markings of any kind. He said it was a rescue so at least I know he is not perpetuating the breeding.

Other than this episode I have never had any problems at the park. I was surprised to read the posts about other dogs treating OES different....Dex has never been treated badly an all the dogs get along with him at our park.

I am hoping this does not happen again and was a one time deal.

Thank you for responding! :!:
Not all dogs will get along with all dogs. Just like people...Do you like everyone you meet? I would guess not....Sounds like am isloated thing...not all dog at dog parks are meant to be there...
