Altitude Effects on Dogs

We are on vacation in Taos, NM. We had a leisurely drive out from the Ft. Worth area spending the night in Amarillo, TX on the way.

The altitude where we live is a little under 1000'. We are in a cabin in the mountains east of Taos, not sure how high but well in excess of 8000'. Dexter sleeps much more than usual and hasn't had his regular spurts of energy resulting in runnng around like crazy. When he walk he is very happy to just stroll along with us without even wanting to investigate anything out of the way. We've taken him into gatherings of people which he is glad to see but happy just to sit next to us and let them come to him, no idiot acts.

He doesn't have any more energy at this altitude than we do! But he is having a great time and smelling aromas be had no idea existed not the least of which is markings from bears, coyotes and chipmunks!

He is a very good traveler.

I guess altitude can affect dogs as well. Takes acouple of days to get used to it. Hope you don't have the headache that can accompany high altitudes. Watch any alcohol consumption, it really gets to you up here.

Sorry it's so chilly. First cold blast of the season.
be careful for the first few days. we have been out west skiing 3 times now and my husband has gotten altitude sickness, chf/pulmonary edema twice and that was with premedication this last time. It was bad enough to require lasix and oxygen the first time and oxygen only with the premeds. the O2 was needed for 2 days. He always complained of a headache but also shortness of breath and nausea. I assume the symptoms are similar for pups not sure how they complain of a headache though.
We made it back home a little while ago, Dexter was visibly thrilled when he realized where he was. You can also tell he feels a lot better.

I think my wife and I had a slight case of altitude sickness and I think Dex was right there with us.

The drive today was trying for him; started with a potty break then drove in thunderstorms for about 5 hours before he could tak another one. He got very fidgety in the back seat and ran to pee when we were finally able to stop.

Next trip is to the lowlands - New Orleans.
You got out in time. They had a bit of snow this a.m. in Taos......really more wet slushy stuff that probably melted quickly. All the mountains got dusted. Was 34 this a.m. after a night of rain "mists". Only 0.34 inch total so never really rained, but enough to ruin last night's balloon events. This a.m. went off without a problem.

Good to know you suffer from altitude.......that way next time you can prepare. 7,000 feet is a big jump. I remember people coming from sea level to Denver, 5200 feet and suffering. Anymore I can't get above 10,000 feet........and I used to live up there!

Yeah, can't get any lower than New Orleans.......OK, Death Valley.
We drove out yesterday thru Angel Fire which was dusted with snow.

The road from Angel Fire to Mora is interesting and not to be traveled in a hurry! We weren't.
Yeah, 434 is a very pretty drive; mountains, valleys, little villages, etc. If all your driving is city or interstate......or wide open Texas, that's a good change. We'll have to get you over your altitude sickness and take you for some good drives in Colorado and Montana
We were in my Chevy Avalanche so the couple times we passed opposite traffic I had to sit up and pay attention because 434 is so narrow.

I think our colds/allergies that kicked off before we left Texas made things much worse than the altitude alone.

We liked the Taos area and especially the "cabin" we were in so much we are already planning our next trip. We will try to come back with our oldest son and his son for spring break in March.

If you are near Taos we should try to get together, Dex thinks he is a one of a kind.
I forgot to ask if you were Aspen peeping driving down to Mora. Also got out a map and realized, that's probably the best way to get to Amarillo......that's quite an interesting drive!

No, we don't live in No. NM but visit often enough......tho not for a few years. Poor Taos is suffering with the economy.......but then they've always been "on the edge."

Dex might be the only sheepdog in the area.....should ask my friend but then she doesn't like sheepdogs at all, thinking only Pyrs are worthy

IF they get snow this winter (and I doubt it looking at long range) there might be some skiing in March.....on something other than man-made.
We were a little disappointed that there aren't too many aspens in the Taos area, at least not at the cabin we were at. Lots of cedar and a few Ponderosa pines. There were quite a few at the Taos ski area.

Seems there are not a lot of OES in North Texas either, I posted in "Play Dates" trying to get something up in the DFW area, so far 27 people have read it and only one responded. We will find an OES playmate for Dexter sooner or later.
Plan a trip to St. Louis for Sheepiepalozza....he will have lots and lots of "his" kind of playmates.

...and no altitude problems either! :rimshot:
We are going to try to come. When is it?

It's over Memorial weekend....usually Friday-Sunday...but not sure if that's the plan this year too. Carol?? Val? Judi?
People come for all or part of the days, whatever fits their schedule.
We are kind of "medium" distance drivers (it's 8 hours for us to St Louis) - we usually leave MN early Friday am, and then drive home on Monday.
