We Got Blessed

Today our church had a blessing of the animal ceremony in honor of St. Francis...We went and so did alot of other humans with their animals...there were birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs and cats....The priest did his prayer mass and then blessed all the animals, and I meand all the animals with the holy water. he actually walked around blessing with the water all over until each and every one there got "splashed"! Nice afternoon and now my dogs are blessed... :)

Hee hee....."Me! Me! father, more water here!" [wiggle bum]
Beginning of each year our priest comes to each parishoner's house, blessing it and all who reside within or on the same property. House, dogs, parrots, horses.........everything gets sprinkled....cats are not impressed. Fortuntely all our priests have been animal lovers! Lately this one is thinking he should have a special day where everyone brings their pets.....could be fun.
Wow, Diane, so you were there? I read an article about it at Reuters dot com.
We have annual Blessing of the Pets services here too. There was just one last month, but I was working :( :(
If anyone is ever in NYC during the Feast of St. Francis one of the most amazing sights is the Blessing of the Animals at the St. John the Divine Cathedral on Amsterdam Avenue and 110th Street in Manhattan. All of the animals from the theatre world, police horses and dogs, plus local pets attend, usually well over a thousand animals.

I came one year with my Abyssinnian cat Abu and it was an a great experience. I sat next to a woman with a Boa Constrictor and the entire time Abu and the snake stared at each other. I think they were saying "I won't eat you, if you don't eat me!"

It is a huge event and tickets are distributed in advance. If you don't have a ticket they ask you to come a couple of hours early.

A great NY free thing to do and seeing all of the different animals is a lot of fun.

P.S. The Cathedral itself is one of the major sightseeing draws in the City and well worth visiting even if you are not there for the Blessing of the Animals. It is one of the largest Gothic Cathedrals in the world and very spectacular.
We saw on the local news they had that this past weekend but we hadn't heard anything about it. We'll have to look for another.
