I have Stanley Coren's book...How to Speak Dog, by Stanley Coren as well as The Art of Raising a Puppy, by New Skete Monks [NOTE: This forum does NOT recommend books by the Monks of New Skete. -ed.] Looking for another good training book that maybe goes into specific areas, of training. Problems things like aggressive behaviours, timid behaviours. I've got the obedience basics down, I don't need another one of those books. Will the Listener or Whisper help? Which one have you preferred? |

I personally love Jan Arnell's (geeze, I hope I got that right) book, "the dog listener"! [The Dog Listener: Learn How to Communicate with Your Dog for Willing Cooperation, by Jan Fennell] Everything makes a lot of sense, seems very easy to apply (as long as you can be consistent), and the training guide in the back is really clear, with great pictures. I just can't recommend this book enough- I think all dog owners should have read it, at least once! |
I have a book called "Just Say Good Dog!" Sorry I don't know who the author is but it is really good and very "common sense" approuch to dog training. |
I would also add The Dog's Mind: Understanding Your Dog's Behavior, by Bruce Fogle, Anne B. Wilson for insights into the why's of dog behavior.and his RSPCA New Complete Dog Training Manual, by Bruce Fogle for practical guides to specific problems. As for OES specific books, A New Owner's Guide to Old English Sheepdogs, by Marilyn Mayfield.
Although probably the most complete and comprehensive tome on all aspects of OES can be found at www.oes.org |
Cesar Millan is my favorite trainer he also is called the Dog Whisperer and was on Opera last night. His show the Dog Whisperer is on the national geographic channel. He has a book coming out in July.
Cesar's Way : The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems (Hardcover), by Cesar Millan, Melissa Jo Peltier People Training for Dogs, Cesar Milan's DVD |
I saw that show, it was amazing. I think I will check his book out, he made alot sense. It helps to see these people put their stuff into action. We don't have National Geographic, wish we did. |
The great thing about Ceaser Millon is that he uses the same technique for everything so it is so simple and easy to apply! |
