Dog Beds?

I'm putting this under medical because I really don't know where else to put it...

Anyway, Noodle, our Newf pup, is twenty weeks old today. He's absolutely massive, and doing so well. The one thing I'm concerned about is his joints. The vet I worked for getting him a thick, comfy bed. She says that sleeping on hard surfaces can damage a Newfoundlands joints, and, seeing as we don't know his history due to him being a rescue, we don't want to take any chances with the joints of such a big boy.

The problem is, he's ALWAYS hot. He only ever sleeps on the tile floor. Even though we allow him to, he NEVER sleeps on the bed. Too hot for him! In fact, even though it's been in the fifties here (and colder at night!), we put up with freezing temps so he can have the air on!! He loves sleeping by the vent.

Anyway, whenever he lies down, he does what I call the 'puppy flop' lol. He just stands and then tumbles down. He's perfectly capable of lying down nicely (he does during training) apparently, he just prefers to flop for comfort. But every time he hits the tile, there's a massive thud. And I wince every time thinking about his joints!!!

So...getting to the point, is there a kind of dog bed that stays cool? Or, preferably, cold? Is it really necessary or am I being paranoid? Thoughts??

Check the Dr's Foster and Smith website. If I remember corrrectly I believe the have a bed with cooling features. Of course I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. :?

We have the same issue (just a smaller dog!) Hot dog...

You might want to look into a cooling bed.
I had one (until our lab pup chewed the plug and they don't have replacement parts :( :( )
We used it mostly in the crate and it seemed to work nicely - it was the only time he would leave something on the floor of the crate and not push it out of the way.
I didn't have great luck using it out in the open at home - he still chose to plop on the cool cement or bathroom floor. :?
Apparently it looked too much like a dog bed, and in his mind dog bed = hot. :(

This is the one we had : http://www.petedge.com/product/Cool-Bed ... /56748.uts
I'm glad I'm not the only one with the problem. :) Thanks for the link, Dawn. I'll definitely look into it, but do you believe that it's really a problem for the joints? I think we'll put one in his kennel, but the only time he's ever put in there is when we're gone. At night, the kennel is in our room, but it's open, so he can choose where he wants to sleep.
I think it potentially could be an issue.

I know most OES who have sore joints do eventually give in and lay on a dog bed, but not until they are at the point they have pain and seek out the softer surface.

I would suggest starting with one as a puppy, and heavily reward him laying on it...maybe you can make it a habit! :crossed: :crossed:
If he is truly hot, then he is going for the cooler floor no matter what. Here my guys....in their younger years....preferred cold floors. They only time they'd look for a dog bed is when the floor were REALLY cold or when they were outside on the porch. Then they have all manner of dogs beds....it's rather a site from the street.

I know exactly what you mean by the Thud. Clancy, an Irish Wolfwolf, would just flop/crash. We'd wince everytime she'd do it. Jack crashes his head........ouch.

Try giving chewie treat on the bed keeping the treat and dog there. If the dog moves, the treat goes away.

I really don't remember our Newf ever using a dog bed........maybe in the coldest winter temp on the porch.

Pictures of your fuzzy giant?
This is where he decided to wedge himself in the few inches between his kennel and the wall. For size comparison, that kennel is an extra large especially for mastiffs, newfoundlands, and great pyrenees.

And this is his normal sleeping position. On the tile floor right by the foyer. Adorable as always. :)

What a cutie! Both Oscar and our first OES, Quincy, did exactly what you describe, and both were on the "big boned" side at over 110 lbs. We bought and gave away more dog beds... :D

Oscar is seven, and to this day, spends most of his time on tile or hardwood. In the dead of winter sometimes I will find him sleeping on his king sized Orvis Nest, but it's short lived. He's just too hot, even clipped year round. Oscar has no joint or spinal issues, even ones that might be expected at his age and his size. My vets marvel every time they xray him. I think it's in the genes. :D

Thanks, Laurie. :) He definitely is a cutie!! But he's also a handful!!! He's very well behaved, especially for his age, but my goodness is he big!!

We had one years ago.

It has a foam liner that you pour water into.

It acted as a big heat sync, aborbing the body heat. TBH it did feel slightly cooler under foot (when standing bare footed on it)

Heavy when full and ours split when we folded it during cleaning- our bad!!!

They may have improved since then.
We went to petsmart and got some sort of bed you blow up. Yuki has POKED through everything and she can never have a toy more than a day, and she's never poked this one. It comes with a cover you can easily take off to wash, but the point is... the part you blow up...is like a cold type plastic type cover. We JUST popped ours and I need to get another one but it wasn't the dog who popped it. The kids have used it as a trampoline for over a year, so a week ago, I stepped on it and part of it popped (the rest of the bed still has all its air).

I looked into the water ones, and I'm tempted to get it, but a lot of the reviews on amazon say if it does spring a leak... it leaks on your floor/carpet. Not a problem if the bed is outside or maybe on tile. We keep ours next to the bed though.
this summer I got Bella one of the cooling beds thinking that she would use it rather than lay on the slate floor in the entryway. She will occasionally lay on the bed but her preferred site is on the slate in front of the door. She does that more now that it is cooler outside. I think she feels a slight breeze, older house and all, and is acting like one of the draft blocks for us. win win for us she keeps cool and less of a draft for us. :yay:
