How much can a puppy actually eat?

I found Schubert with his face in the kibble bag.....AFTER his dinner.
His tummy feels full but he continuously wants to eat more! My god this boy is food driven.
We've been trying to following the daily suggested amount on the side of the kibble bag but 1 cup a day is nothing for him.
(We've been giving him 1.5 cups)

If I were to fill up his food bowl, would he eat till he gets sick???
Could he have become food obsessed because we are not giving him enough food?

A cup a day is definitely not enough for an oes puppy....

Just to give you an idea, my 12 week old puppy Rumour is now eating between 4-5 cups of quality puppy food per day. I don't know how much she weighs I'll find out tomorrow when she goes for her second set of vaccines but I'd guess she's over 20 lbs, maybe 25 lbs.
I feed three times a day, putting about 2 cups of food in in the morning, 1 cup at lunch and 2 cups late in the evening. The food is mostly eaten at once and some is left for her to nibble.
Rumour??? Love the name! lol!!!

Spot on advice with the pupper feeding.

:cow: :cow: OH NO.... We've been underfeeding Schubert
He must have been so hungry all this time.
What in the world is up with the guidelines? :(

Not all eat that amount - it can vary...but 1.5 sounds a bit low.

While Chewie was growing, the most I could ever pack into him was 4 cups - and that got us loose disgusting poop too. 3 was more the norm. (trying to gain weight for the show ring).
As a super active adult he still eats a max of 3 cups...it's just all he wants.

Keep checking his condition by really feeling him through the hair to check condition. Weigh him often and monitor his growth. At first they gain real steady, then later it goes in spurts. (They will get chubby, then spurt up in growth, getting lanky and thinner; then bulk up again, etc....)
What brand of kibble are you feeding Schubert? Is it extremely calorie dense?

It's been awhile since we've had a puppy in the house, but Oscar ate 4 - 4.5 cups (dry measuring cups) per day. We also split that up over three meals, to reduce the risk of bloat. (Oscar is a big boy, at 110 lbs.)

You might want to take a couple of days to increase his food to the total amount, as you don't want to overload his digestive system and quadruple his food in one fell swoop. I would add a meal or two, at 1 cup each, for a couple of days, to see how it goes. Then increase the number of cups per meal until you reach your goal.

I think Schubert is soon to be a very happy puppy! :D

Thanks for the suggestions.

We're feeding him proplan chicken rice + Chicken soup for the puppy lovers' soul (in the process of switching)
We give him 1.5 cups-2 cups a day of proplan and sprinkle on the new food.

He's having major diarrhea this morning...
Rumour is a bit of a pig but it's rare for pups to really overeat much in my experience so I try to let them find their own "happy place" when it comes to food.
However my girl Phoebe is a tiny girl, at 9 months old she was only 38 lbs and NOT underweight. She has solid bone and muscle and not much fat, she's a tiny compact dog who also eats 6 cups of puppy food a day LOL
She's very active though and appears to have a fast metabolism.
Panda on the other hand is a full grown girl who averages about 60 lbs and only needs 4 cups a day to maintain her weight. Willy is a 2 year old giant boy who eats about 9 cups a day. Piper is about the same size as her mother and averages 60 lbs but only needs about 3 cups a day to maintain that. Every dog is different.... just like people.
Normally I would say if poop gets loose you could try feeding less however if you're in the process of switching foods that goes out the window. Food switches can make many oes get diarreah. Just to rule anything else out though I would take a stool sample to the vet if it continues and also deworm again just in case. It can't hurt and usually helps.

Your breeder proabaly gave you guide lines on the amount of food & what type of food to keep him on. I would check with your breeder 1st.
Ripley is getting between 4-5 cups of Innova per day in 4-5 meals and he gets about 5 minutes to eat. What he doesn't eat gets picked up. We've always gone with smaller- multiple meals as our schedules made it easy to do.

We just keep on eye on his "poo". Softie poo is often a sign of too much food, so while things are nice and firm we will stick to his present feeding.
Kenny is 12 weeks on Thursday and it's a challenge to get him to eat 2-3 cups a day. We have to almost trick him into eating or play with the food. He was the same with Pro Plan (currently moved to Iams since my wife works for the company haha).

Bag says 3 cups a day...he eats 2 to 2.5 on a good day. He is just constantly distracted or picks up 3 pieces, walks under the table, drops them, and plays with them for 30 seconds before eating. Weird dog.

But he's also gained 2 lbs a week so vet says it's pretty good from that aspect.
Dexter ate 3 meals a day of Eukanuba Lamb and Rice Puppy food with a tablespoon of plain yogurt for his first 16 weeks or so. The amount varied with age and weight, increasing monthly but it was always more than a cup a day. The yogurt gave him beneficial enzymes and enthusiasm to eat kibble but there wasn't enough to make a mess. We stopped the yogurt a month or so before we changed food.

During Puppy Kindergarten we looked over various foods at the shop and read the "Rate Your Dog Food" post on Medical and Nutrician. The food he had been eating didn't rate well but California Natural Lamb and Rice Puppy did. The Eukanuba had a lot of filler and required twice as much to provide the same nutrients. The shop gave us sample bags and he loved all of it. After we changed to CN he contunued to gain 1 1/2-2 pounds a week, his stool was much firmer and less volume. At 9 months he still gains almost a pound a week.

At about 6 months he stopped eating lunch on his own as the breeder said he would so we increased the amount he got in the morning and evening meals. He became a "graze" eater so we pick his bowl up after 15 minutes and put it back down at the next meal.

Bottom line, quantity of food varies with the brand of food and the age/weight of the dog.
We also have been leaving it down for 20 minutes and taking it up. Trying to teach him that if he doesnt eat during that 20 he has to wait significant time until the next meal. I have noticed if he eats only like half his food at lunch he eats more vigorously at dinner.
Duh, somebody has major poopy today! The little pig! I'll reinforce, increase gradually!! Tummies are tender and any upset comes shooting out the rear.

That's what was recommended to us by Madeline..
She said she's never had and problems with ProPlan Chicken and Rice but we were free to switch if we wanted so we wanted to switch to something with a good rating/ingredients..
Anyways, I'm communicating with our breeder about this after my freaking out.....
OMG I am the worst mom.
I misunderstood Madeline and when she meant "one half a cup" per meal, I was feeding him "half a cup" per meal (and then a bit more) :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
If someone said "give me one half a cup" i would expect that to mean 1/2 of a cup since that's how it reads. Don't worry about it!! :)
Yay! Nick just reported that runny diarrhea has now become soft formed stool

Whew~ :plead:

Don't beat yourself up over this. This is why you buy from a reputable breeder :D You should always be able to contact them with any questions. As you can see, she was readily available & willing to answer your question.
maybe she said "one an a half". we talk very fast in this area of the state and things can sometimes sound a little muddled if you are not used to a "fast talker". I think it is an upstate NY thing. I dictate all day at work and when people come in and hear how fast I go they can't believe anyone can talk that fast and that a machine can interpret what I say! And I am not even the fastest talker in my group.

Chowder will be 2 at the end of December is this is still true for us. She doesn't like to eat she only eats because after awhile she just gets hungry.
She is 60 lbs, tall and skinny and not underweight as to the vet is concerned but it would be nice if she ate more.
At 14 months we started adding wet food to the mix and the more wet food we add the more she is likely to eat of the two cups of dry food.
