Alternatives to Trimming Hair by the Eyes?

Benson started her obedience classes this past Saturday. One thing the trainer mentioned (which I was anticipating) is that she'd like us to trim around her eyes so she can see better.

Here's a picture of Benson from yesterday:

It's the hair growing on her nose that is the problem. It stands up like a fan, and that's what's mainly blocking her view. I know that eventually it will grow long enough to either lay down on the sides of her nose, or pull the center up into a topknot, but we're not there yet. (And certainly won't be by this weekend! )

I'm willing to trim it for the duration of the classes, but if anyone has any (non-toxic, of course!) suggestions for ways to get the hair to lay down out of the way, I'd love to hear them. The classes run about 2 hours, so even if we wet her nose down, it'll dry out by the end of class and be back in her way again.

Oh that little face is just too cute! :hearts: I myself wouldn't trim it just because the trainer thinks you should. Teddy did just fine seeing through that hair grow stage. I would just slick it down with my fingers every now and then. If you are planning on keeping it trimmed, then trim away. Otherwise, give it a few more weeks and it won't stick up as much.

Seriously - the TRAINER thinks you should cut her hair?
Now I've heard everything.

I've been a trainer for most of my life and that's a new one. Now I can see out of control flopping in her face hair as an issue, but this is puppy hair in that scraggly, growing stage. :?

Several small ponytails work well, and will get you by as her hair grows.
We did pigtails for a long time, until a single topknot worked.
And even doing 3 or more is an option.
We've had several threads on here about growing out hair, if you search under grooming you should turn up lots of info, as well as pictures.

It does need to be contained as she grows the hair, but cutting it doesn't need to be your only option.

We even went back to 2 pigtails with the latest short trim I did on Chewie - one ponytails just didn't keep it out of his eyes enough for carting and agility - as lead dog carting he REALLY needs to see, and agility - well not seeing would be pretty disastrous. 8)

and an alternate style -

And that nose hair - it is looking pretty close to the right length to start laying down.
It you want, you can spray a little hairspray on your comb and quickly comb the hair down - it will help train it and tame it for classtime.
We used 2 or 3 small berettes and some canine hair "moose" to slick down Dexter's snout hair until it all grew out long enough to use top knots (2 or 3 then finally 1). The hair on the back of his snout still stnads up oncei in a while.

Getting to the single top knot took longer because I made the huge mistake of trimming above his eyes at about 5 months. His mom, breeder and an AKC judge/breeder friend got very upset with me. I am still restricted from using scissors without direct supervision!
I would just use small rubber bands for pigtails, or hair gel, barrettes, or any combo of whatever works :) I definitely wouldn't cut it unless it's what YOU want to do.
This is Phoebe in her barrettes as a baby

I wouldn't cut the hair by benson's nose! he is absolutely adorable and I could just eat up that cute little face :hearts:
Plus, getting a scissor that close to his eyes are a bit scary unless you ahve a good hand. Puppies can be a bit wiggly.

I vote for the doggy hair moose or gel to hold it in place while it grows...
I had the same questions with not as nice a picture:

Back in mid-july. In the end the best answer for keeping the hair up was to start a part and constantly push the hair that is supposed to go up and the hair that is supposed to go down, down.

then a small barrette to hold the upper hair up works but Chowder ate them. So we added a third center pony tail. She had 3.

Now almost October and the hair stays down and the upper hair almost all fits in the pigtails.
The woman that trims Butchy does a great job but would always give him the poodle head cut. This time she left it alone, showed her how I've seen others part the hair so some goes down and some goes up. It's long enough now that I am going to try putting it in pig tails, never did it before so we'll see how that goes, will probably have several but that's ok.
I had a really bad experience at groomers with bloo. He looked like yours to start, we asked them to bath him and trim his fringe.
He came out looking like a poodle! Theyd shaved all the fur from his nose, and shaved all round his eyes. Looking back now i wish i never took him!, it is growing back now though, and we still have people go `ahh isnt he cute` lol :)
I wouldnt cut it just because the trainer wants it done. They look cuter like that :P
:wag:
Thanks for all the feedback! It's been very helpful.

First of all, I realized that I've misrepresented our trainer a bit. When I was interviewing her, we talked at length about a variety of things. In talking about OES in particular, she wanted to be clear that Benson needs to be able to see, even if it means trimming around the eyes. After class, she asked us to make sure her sightline was nice and open for the next class. When I originally posted, I shortened that, and made it sound like she was demanding a trim. My bad!

But . . . I also realized that Benson's fur is just short enough that I can't really get it into pigtails just yet. We are so close, but not quite there! And even with pigtails, the "fan" across her nose will still be there. I know it will grow back if we trim, but she'll have to go through this same transitional stage at some point, so I'd rather just deal with it now.

So we tried using a little pomade to control the fur on her nose. She's been fantastic about letting us mess with her nose, and comb the fur to where we want it. We do a little every day so it's not a major issue, and every day she lets us take a little more time with her. And today I went out and got some barrettes to hold the fur above her eyes. I put them in, and she's pretty much left them alone.

To remind you, this is the before picture:

And here is our girl with her new bling, showing off her beautiful eyes!

Thanks again for all your helpful advice! I can't wait for proper pigtails, but this works well until then.
She looks cute with the barrettes in. I put little pony tails on Butchy this morning. Have to get some better rubber bands tho, I guess Sally's sells some and I understand they hold the hair better. Carl's not sure he likes them tho.
She looks adorable :D

It's just a stage, kind of like a human growing out bangs
She is adorable!! My Lizzy is 6 and I've never top knotted her. I've just kept her hair trimmed. After being on this site for a while I've really come to love the top knots. I tried to put them in her hair this morning before our walk and you would have thought I'd stuck hot needles into her eyes. She whined and squirmed and threw a fit until I took them out. They were in loose (not pulling her eye open because they were too tight) but she would have nothing to do with it!! Wish I'd started it when she was a puppy. Now, my Bentley's hair is so thick it just stands straight up like a fro!! LOL!!
Adorable, has she got same coloured eyes. Bloo has bi eyes.:)
I have to admit i cant go through that bit of growing stage. I cut a small ridge from inner corner of each eye, not from under or above the eye just a slim line.
If you can persevere try using wax to hold it down, moose, gel just dont do it. If your going to try at this stage your only. A few months away.. go for it because once you trim you only have to go through it again!

Bloos mum... if you mean odd coloured eyes, its called wall eye. Billy jas that too one blue one brown
Cute cute cute! Love the pics. :hearts:
oh :P
Didnt know what they called it but hes got one blue one brown
So had something to add here as Kenny is starting to get long in the eyes and i'm trying to decide between trimming and pulling up.

Anyway, we took him to Petsmart for a bath and paw trim, told them not to cut the face at all as we handle it. Apparently they got mad at my wife cuz his eye hair was too long and "he'll get an infection from itching it". Now my first instinct was to laugh because this seems ridiculous....am i wrong?
If his eyes are itchy to him it may be worth checking out with the vet. It is from something else, not the length of his hair.
Rght. That was the funny part cuz he has never itched his eyes and isn't currently.

I don't know whether to laugh because it's so ridiculous, or cry because there are people giving out that crap as advise and mis-informing people to that extent!
