Credit Fraud

Yipes! Apparently someone is trying to open accounts all over the place in DH's name! Fortunately Home Depot called and asked and as soon as I said, "Hell no!" I immediately contacted LifeLock and signed up for their identity theft service and within 8 hours they found 2 more attempts, one credit card, one loan company. I always suspected the ID theft with the bank was useless.....and confirmed now since I have't heard from them.

All cards are still in our possession, so how this info was gathered, don't know. Don't know if he got scanned on the street or some employee of a business he has used his card or, gulp, internet shopping of which I do a fair amount.

So if you don't have an ID theft plan, consider it!

That is scary. I think we all worry about that, have gotten called from the cc company that we had an issue a couple years back. Not trusting anything I hung up and called the cc myself so it was legit. Someone was buying computer equipment out of the country but luckily it was caught in time and we were fine.

I think there are so many ways now that the thieves can get information it's almost impossible to truly protect yourself.

I've heard of the lifelock but really didn't pay too much attention to it. Maybe we should.
YIKES is right!

I find it interesting that these are "attempts" and not accounts, and I'm glad you acted so quickly to set locks on your credit rating agency profiles.

GOOD CATCH! and good luck.
So glad you caught it quickly--

Have you been to any hotels lately?? Big scam going on with taking personal info off hotel strip room keys!
Don't ever leave the keys in the room when you leave!

We are in New Mexico right now and one of our friends here in our hotel--had fraud on the card they used to check in to the hotel--happened in the first 24 hours they were here--over $1800 on their card! Scary!
So you are the one bringing rain! Thank You! A little here and there really helps.
Yes--a little rain everyday! :D Really enjoyed our trip --went to Santa Fe today--BEAUTIFUL! The only downside is we did not get to bring the boys with us!
We were alerted two weeks ago that one of our credit cards was having a great time in Long Beach - while we are stuck in Dallas. They closed the account and we've had to move all of our scheduled payments over to the new cards (what a pain). And we found charges in Fla, Ga and Co. All of the charges are at Sams - go figure.
I used my debit card at the gas station yesterday and when I put in my PIN, it showed on the screen on the pump! It was too late to cancel the transaction but when I was done I gave the person behind the counter a lecture on how unsecure that is, said I would never use that gas station again, then went straight to the bank to change my PIN. The banker was aghast at what happened.

And no, I did not get an option to use my debit card as a credit. Foolish me figured my PIN would not show on the screen on the pump. I've monitored my checking account online a few times since yesterday and things so far are fine.
Someone got our number a few years back and ran up thousands of dollars on a debit card. The bank told us we could not have a debit card with them for at least a year.
:? :?
We were being punished for something someone else did. I always worry about Identity theft. A friend of mine had her identity stolen and it took her several years to get it straightened out.
Now they have ways of getting information that make it difficult for us to prevent.
Maybe I should rethink what I need to do. :lmt:
Yipes is right! So glad you caught it and no damage has or will be done! What a pain to have to deal with.

We only use one card for the internet so we could track it if something suspicious happens.

You just don't know if it happened at a local establishment or if someone hacked the info through another place.
Discover has a system where you can create one-time use credit card numbers in your account to use online.
There are so many ways criminals can get access to your credit/debit cards. It's almost impossible to figure out where it happened. The important thing is to bank with an organization that backs you up in case of fraud. My credit union is super about locking the card down quickly and reimbursing the money to my account right away. When it happened to us a few years ago, there was $2500 in gas and purchases at Sam's and Walmart many states away within 24 hours. The money was all back in our account within another 24 hours.

Our debit card provider in conjunction with our CU also locked out purchases at all grocery stores, Walmart and Target on the east coast this summer because of a huge card scam ring. It was annoying not knowing that in advance of our vacation, but I do appreciate them being proactive.

Was this by chance Thornton's on 31? I just found out my credit card has been getting some wonky charges since I stopped there Tuesday morning. New card coming...
What makes me wonder is they had his SSN and date of birth numbers. Spooky. So far four hits.......all credit and loan applications were denied. When he when to Sheriff to report it, the detective said our report was the fifth she had filled out that day! DH talked to one faud investigator on the phone they said they had "seven hits from the same party".....DH didn't ask if that meant 7 hits on his name and numbers or 7 hits coming back to a particular address...7 hits on the same computer....or what?
a few yrs back, they stole my credit card number at a restaurant...never give your card to a waiter to take...they can swipe it, keep the number and sell it off to someone else....my card number made it all the way to Italy...too bad they didnt send me anything Gucci...
Just think..If the people who think up these scams were to put those brains to good use...scary.

Probably a database of somewhere he does have a legitimate account was hacked.
Yeah, insurance, pension, medical, all pretty spooky.
