Cars for dogs; What do you have? What do you wish you had?

Simple as the title asks...

This is a dog-related question, (we can touch on hot rods in a different post). What kind of car do you have that you use for hauling the dogs?

I currently have an Isuzu Trooper and I love it! However, Zoey WON'T jump up into it and I suspect this behavior may carry over to Caitlyn; that and the rear seats fold then tumble forward so they're always in the way. The Trooper, I bought new in 2000 is about done so we're looking at something new again. Sadly, I fell in love with a car they stopped production on in May. In May, Honda stopped making the Element. To me, this is the perfect dog car; lots of floor room with a rubber mat covering; relatively low entrance for the dogs; decent mileage and reliable as a Honda can be. Our next car will be new, so I'm looking for a back up idea in case there aren't any new Elements available when we're ready to buy. Some of the secondary front runners are a Subaru Forester, Ford Flex, (if I can get past that $30K for a station wagon 8O ) and if VW ever does make the Bulli, I'd look at that.

So lemme hear your thoughts...

I have a Dodge Caravan Minivan. I bought it for the dogs. I raised 4 children and never broke down and bought a Minivan. lol I love this minivan because the seats stow in the floor, which works out great for the dogs and our business. We leave the bench seat up in the back, and that is where Violet sits...One seat is left up in the middle because sometimes China likes to sit up on the chair and look out or she moves to the floor to streach out. (I have a special dog bed on the floor to soften the floor for their old bones) Asia usually sits up in the passenger seat and is my co-p.
We have a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer and that was our main "dog car" until this May. We had to replace our 4 door sedan and ended up with a VW Jetta Sportwagen. We got this as our next "dog car" because we don't know how long the Trailblazer will last. That way we always have a "dog car" and don't have to worry about being unable to easily transport the princess :D

One of my biggest requirements were middle seats that fold down completely flat...this was whether we ended up with an suv or wagen of some kind.

Izzie always needs/wants a butt boost into vehicles...cars/trucks/suvs alike.   She will put her front paws in and look back at you waiting for her boost :cow: :cow: I swear there could somehow be a step down into a vehicle and she would want help
We bought our xterra w/our dog in mind because there is no carpet in the luggage area where yuki sits. With that said, we wish we hadn't ...but that's just b/c we don't like our car. It IS a good option for the dog.

Now we have a honda odyssey and it's leather and we have perfectly fitted rubber mats in-between aisles, so I'd have to say it's perfect. Don't regret it. Definitely want another one. Fit two in the first row ...no problem with room for the side aisle and/or back row
Ahh, a good topic that hasn't been revisited in awhile 8)

I'm going to go a bit backwards....

I've always had dogs, and in quantity
The least we ever had (briefly) was two, as we each brought a dog into the marriage. And not small dogs either - a GSD and a springer. And it rapidly grew from there. In the 1st year we added Daisy the basset....and never looked back!

When we married I had an old station wagon from my college days. Pretty soon we had a Baha bug, Todd had a Roadrunner, a pickup...but we did get a minivan. Having twins (human babies) after a year pretty much sealed that one! That was the start of our van dynasty. We had a series of 3 of them...3 kids, many dogs (the kids all had their own dogs too) and it was just the best match. They all were Mopar - Dodge Caravans. They treated us very well!

By this time the kids were grown and gone....and when daughter Lisa moved to NY from MN to finish college, I bought her car from her. The current van was super high miles, and ready to be retired. That was my purple car era - a bright royal (or Vikings!) purple Ford Escort hatchback. Amazing little car. That was about 7 yrs ago that it came to me. It's still in the family - my son Travis is now driving it. It was super dependable, and still gets over 30mpg. But, it was old (it's a 1996) and not really suited for the high miles driving I do as our primary vehicle. Also, it was a bit small for all my hauling of "stuff". I did keep the rear seats down most of the time, and it was really roomy in the back for the dogs. The picture below has 3 dogs - Simon the basset is hidden...

So I started looking for a new vehicle. The 2 I narrowed it down to were the Ford Escape and Honda Element. I briefly was thinking I needed a van again just for the space, but I really wanted to try something different! The final decision was the Element. I didn't need the 4WD for the Escape, as Todd has a big 4WD Dodge Ram truck. If the weather was that bad, the truck would be used. And I loved the amazing amount of useable space the Element has. And a big plus was that the height was not as high. (Remember, I have Bassets... Simon used to be able to jump right in, now with age and poor health he needs a little butt boost. Harley, who is 13.5 years still hops in all by himself!)
I ran into availability (or lack of) issues. My local dealership was great. I never had been there before, but they bent over backwards to find me a vehicle. 1st I was looking for a low miles late model Element...but there just weren't any in about a hundred mile radius. Then when we relooked at it, the sales person did some computing and figured I could get a brand new basic model for the same as what I was looking at for the more decked out used ones. I was good with that - as Honda has decent features even standard. :D
Again, availability was an issue. They did searching and found one in Sioux Falls, SD. That is 180 miles from us. :? But - they sent a guy with a trailer out there, and drove it back on a flatbed to our town - by the NEXT DAY.

I love my Element. It was brand new in July 2007. I have put just about 100,000 miles on it. It's been out to P-town on Cape Cod, Rochester NY, out to Frankenmuth, MI through the UP of MI, St Louis about 3-4 times. Devil's Lake ND twice and multiple trips to Milwaukee/Chicago.
I love the easy care interior, the removable or fold flat back rear seats - they even flip up like wings along the side for quick space needs...takes about a minute and uses built in carabiners. Has Honda dependability. I even brought my dog sled home inside of it!
I added a rear bumper carrier for the really big volume trips, and it also pulls a small trailer easily. I brought Stefany the llama and baby Francis down to Iowa this summer pulling a trailer w/ it.
Husband Todd was so critical of it when I go it...disgusted actually, that I bought a "box on wheels". But the 1st big trip to Milwaukee he said "let me drive that"...and he was HOOKED! Now he loves it and is not ashamed to tell others that they are great. :high5:

The day I got it:

Out in the UP of MI on the way to OES Nationals -

This was before I got the hitch installed, so everything was inside the vehicle. We had: 2 adults, 2 OES, 2 bassets, all our clothes for a week - and that included stuff for all our showing - herding stuff, conformation clothes, obedience and rally and travel gear. All the show stuff - herding stick, grooming table, tack box, all the dryers etc., and 3 crates. It was amazing!! :roses: :roses:
I had a Chevy Cavalier for years, and it was horrible for dogs. I used to transport dogs for my rescue all the time and it was impossible to keep them from crawling into the front seat!

Now I have a Honda CRV and it's great. Enough room to keep dog supplies in the back and then I have a car hammock in the back for the dogs to hang in.

I wish I had an Element though. Seems so easy to clean and take the seats out!
I'm with Mrs. J. Honda Odyssey, leather. None of mine have been able to do the rear entry without help, but all have some orthpedic problem. So they go in thru the side doors....now all need a helping boost there too. Heck, I may soon too! I've had 7 dogs in there at one time, SRO of course, but real fun at the vet's playing musical dogs.

Jack still loves to get in and sit between the front seats.....even for the 60' ride from the gate to the garage.....he's my copilot.

Car before was a Jeep Wagoneer which I could get 4 in easily. There too all needed boosts.

Car before was a Volvo wagon.......3 dogs with ease.

I'm with you, sad about the Element. I looked at them when we got the Odyssey but whimped out for the luxury for us uprights. Now will either do another Odyssey......like Mrs. J, love em, or a Pilot if we are dogless then.

The one negative, maybe only negative on the Odyssey, is the heavy middle seats that have to be removed if you want a totally flat area. I'm not that strong anymore. Since my dog pack is now 3, it isn't an issue. I hope I never have to remove them again.
i have a ascender like a trailblazer i took out the back set so they boys can jump right in i would love to get a kia soul not sure if they would fit.. i had a cruiser and they loved that one
I bought a '99 Chevy Blazer 4x4 for the winter & Brick 2 years ago.

Paid $3,300 for it; now has 145K on it; runs great; like a mountain goat in the snow; and Brick has the whole back seat to himself (and still he tries to get into the front  ). No problems with him hopping in by himself.
To clarify our Trailblazer was new July 5 2001 and has 200,000 miles on it. We have never had anything besides "regular" maintenance and normal stuff replaced. It has been a great dog car and could still last awhile.

LeAnne and Keith have a Soul - they really like it.
They haul the 2 kids, Martha the OES and Poppy the cattledog in it easily.
I have a BMW 328i. Oscar takes up the whole back seat. He normally lays down while I am driving, so I love it when we pull up to a stoplight and Oscar's giant head pops up. We get lots of smiles from other drivers on the road.

We also have a GMC Denali, which is way too big for me. I always feel like I'm driving a school bus.

Laurie and Oscar
I got a new Maxima about 6 months before Tonks and Luna came along. They fit nicely in the back seat together. The bad thing is we often do actiivites with friends that i want to bring the dogs to, and there's no putting Adam and I, Tonks and Luna, and anyone else in the car with us. So I think we are destined for an SUV or Utility vehicle of some sort. I'm keeping my Maxima though- Adam can trade in his Camry!!!
I've had a Trooper which I loved. Sadly the transmission was sounding like it was about to go...So the Trooper had to go. Then I got the Exterra. It was a good SUV and it was loaded, had heated seats which are good on cold mornings or in WI cold months.

I traded it in for a "COOL" looking jeep. I am still in love with my Jeep, the only thing I don't like about it is the foot room. It always seems my driving foot is jammed into the bottom of the console.
I have an Explorer. I love it but I wish, wish, wish I had a HUGE truck with an extended cab and a canopy. We go camping alot in the middle of nowhere, and the explorer is almost not big enough for 3 dogs and all our camping gear. Maybe an F-250... :lmt:
I have an Avalanche which I throughly love. I've always had a pick up truck and didn't want to give up that bed hauling option which is why I love my Avalanche. I have the nice SUV size seats and 4 doors but can still open up the back of the truck to haul something tall. I've only ever had one dog at a time so just one back seat has been okay for me.

Funny you mention the Trooper's transmission. I've replaced my clutch twice in the last two years. Both time as the result of a single poorly designed part, (a retaining ring that comes apart due to a bad design!) that you can't buy separately, you have to but it in a clutch kit that runs upwards of $500. The single part, I found at a dealer of all places for a mere $79! After trying to install it the second time and forgetting how I did it, I took it out an WELDED the damn thing together!!! This actually happened the week before our drive up to Toledo to pick up Caitlyn. So that trip was really the shake down drive. A 149 mile test drive!

When the Trooper was only four years old with 74K miles, it spun a rod bearing in the engine but the warranty covered the $7400 replacement bill.

All this and I still love this car, but it's time has come as I need better mileage as the Trooper is getting a low 14 mpg.

I always had a dream of getting a Mercedes Benz convertible when I turned 50...However, with two giant sheepdogs and lots of stuff, I got a Dodge Caravan instead! Love it. Its specifically the "dog" car" as I drive a Kia Sportage everyday and hubby has a Pathfinder. The rear seats in the Van fold all the way into the floor so floor is flat and I keep their two crates set up at all times for a quick escape. My dogs travel in their crates so needed something I could keep set up while travelling.

I liked the Honda Element as well. But my question to those that have it is...can you set up two crates inside or do you travel with the dogs free?
This is the car I'd like to get for hauling Mady around (it would suit her super-star attitude  )

I have a 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX which we got for Mady, and she insisted we get the turbo because she likes life in the fast lane.

We got a Kurgo backseat bridge for the backseat and it works really well, Mady is much more comfortable in it:
http://www.kurgostore.com/products/Back ... 84%A2.html
Only issue is that we can't have both the crate and the seat bridge in the same time. But I wouldn't need the crate going most places (e.g. we brought it, but didn't actually need or use it at Sheepiepalooza).

I would have no issue travelling with 2 sheepies long distance with it. 3 would be ok for short drives. So right now, I'm perfectly happy with the WRX for carting sheepies around.
We inherited a 2000 Ford Focus Station wagon and believe it or not, once you put down the middle seats and throw down a quilt, it offers enough space for our three sheepies and luggage (both ours and theirs) for travel.

We had a lot of unexpected deaths in Josh's family and had inherited a number of vehicles and one of which was a 2004 mustang. Though I know Josh LOVED that car, it wasn't really economical for us, especially here in the winter. We have a LOT of hills and it can get very slick on the Mississippi. Not to mention, he could only cart around ONE dog at a time and all three would prefer to go together everywhere (even the vet). When the mustang was stolen and totaled we bought a car with the dogs in mind and settled on a 2007 Chevy HHR. Again, once you put down the front seat, it's not that bad. We can fit luggage right behind the seats and laptop bags fit into a compartment in the back. Here is a picture on our trip to Wisconsin a couple weeks ago.

Now, in a few years when we try for a two legged child, we will probably need to rethink our car choices.
Ford Focus wagon - another good one.

I took one down to Sheepiepalooza in St Louis the 1st year. We were PACKED, but it packed really well.
We had 3 adults, 3 dogs and all our stuff for a 5 day excursion :D
Hubby drives the dog car: dodge grand caravan. Personally, I'd prefer a Honda but there is no dealership in town and that becomes an issue of convenience with the next nearest town 30 miles away. I'd also prefer a Toyota based soley on the fact that I love my toyota camry a lot: dependability, decent mileage, dealership in town. But hubby isn't fond of Toyota and likes Dodge and since he drives it mostly, he gets to choose.

Re: caravan. Stow and go seats are da bomb! Super, super convenient. Also, good air circulation, fast heating in the winter, even in the back. Windows role down which is probably not a plus for dogs but is for people.
One other thing I have to say about my Dodge Caravan is the sliding side doors are so wonderful. I hit the button and the dogs can all get in with no problem. When we get home, we pull into the garage, I get out go around, close the garage door and hit the button to get them out and they go right into the house. The side door slides are also great for groceriers and hauling things for our business. The seats are very comfortable as well. The far back, where Violet sits on the "couch" there are "vent" windows that are great when it is winter here and don't have to use the a/c so much. I've been thrilled with my van and so have the girls. 8) :wag:
My fancy dog hauler is my 2005 Saab 9-5 sedan. Back seat folds down making a great platform for Nelson to lay on. Also plenty of room to haul things to dog shows, gets good mileage and is comfy to drive.

Our long-haul dog hauler is DH's '09 Honda Pilot. We make at least four trips between IN and SC throughout the year and can haul two dogs and lots of gear and has enough power to pull the hills through the Smokies. Gas mileage isn't great but it's comfortable, dependable and lots of room for our stuff.
I couldn't ask for a better dog car with the Element. It fits all three of mine (smallest one is 90 pounds) with room to spare and is super easy to keep clean, easy to get the seats in and out and really simple for the dogs to get in and out of. For dog hauling, I'd happily get another one.

Sadly, you won't be buying a new one as they stopped production back in May...

I have a dodge caravan and I love it. It's old and has close to 300,000 km on it now but for example the last tank of gas I got 760 km out of one tank. (about 472 miles)
I'll definitely buy another when the time comes. I hate the new style though, boxy and square, sharp angles and lines, no style :( I may just buy another used one that isn't the ugly new style lol

Stacey,
I will agree with you that the new ones are kinda ugly. But they've made them a bit better for the 2011 or 2012 model year; cleaned up the front & rear ends.
And they completely redid the interior on them for either 2011 or 2012.

Or you could wait 1 or 2 more years when the new one is supposed to come out.
I just bought a 2002 Honda Odyssey, and both of my dogs opened the automatic side doors at different times today and jumped out!
I miss my dodge Caravan because it did not have the automatic doors. I hate these doors! It's also very easy for them to accidentally open the windows because the switches are on a horizontal plane, they step right on them when they are checking out our surroundings, or in the case of the doors opening, checking out where I am going. I was able to grab the dogs because I was standing near the van when this happened. I don't know what to do now, I likw them to roam free in the van, but perhaps it just isn't safe to do that now.
As far as the windows go, doesn't your car have a window lock-out switch, usually near the driver's window control panel?
I know my honda odyssey has one. I use it all the time when I leave the car for a sec but the kids and dog are still inside (set the windows then lock em in place). You can also turn off the feature that the doors automatically open and put it on manual.

I've never heard of the automatic doors being a complaint. Nothing is more handy than heading to your car with your dog off leash and being able to direct his/her focus on the car and ONLY CAR by the sound of those back doors opening. ;)

However, if my doors automatically opened as you mentioned... I'd be extremely scared. Now that I think about it... with my car (different year than yours), I am 100% the doors CAN'T open when in motion. One of my husband's complaints!! When we try to let one of them out and just use the break... it won't let us open the doors. We have to put it in park.

My first car was 89' Trooper!! I named him Bailey and he was my first love. :hearts: :hearts: The trooper went on 3 cross country trips, endured 4 accidents, 2 fires (transmission fluid leaks), $5000 in repairs. Lots of great memories in that car but it finally died few years ago. I own a Mini Cooper Clubman now and love it. One of the reasons I bought the Clubman is because of the Trooper -- both cars has similar dashboard look (odometer centered opposed to being on the driver's side). Love my Clubman - wouldnt trade it for the world. We also have a Volvo station wagon - trusty car but driving it makes us feel old.
When I was born, my parents had a 1962 VW Deluxe Microbus much like this, (called a Split Windshield):

As result of growing up in this bus, (my father was a Boy Scout Troupe Leader and we camped out with the bus nearly every weekend!) up through 1970, my brother and I both have been big VW fans. Sadly though, the above body style is hard to find in good shape so for me to find one worthy of restoration would set me back a LOT of cash.

However, below is the second generation Bus, (called a Bay Window) and they're still fairly plentiful for good low prices.

I can buy one of these and restore it for FAR less than the price of a new minivan and have 10 times the style. And if anything breaks, I can fix it without needing a guy from the dealer with a degree...

I think that with me owning a couple Sheepies and my love for the older VWs, this really is the perfect car for me. Now if I can just convince Jen...

Vance
Go for it Vance
If you are able to restore your own- go for it-what a great vehicle for Sheepies!! Love it!
And living in Ohio, I can get a gas heater for a Bus which will eliminate the whole 'no heat' issue inherent with VWs in general! Although, I used to own a '65 Beetle and the heat in that car was great without a gas heater.

Vance
I thought this said cats for dogs when I clicked on it then got very confused when everyone was talking about cars...
I have a Pontiac g6 that I love. It is not the optimal dog car though because I have no passenger space with both dogs unless you're going to sit between them.
Haha you all have such big cars.
We have to cart bloo around in a tiny mitsubishi czc2 convertible :P Hes already brok the chair, ripped the seat and eaten the door...whoever would buy it is very silly lol.
Even I find it hard to sit in my moms car its tiny!!!
First car was a Cougar, not a dog friendly car. Moved to a Volvo wagon which lasted for 20 years! Then went to a Jeep Grand Cherokee, hard for the gang to get into and with 5 dogs, a bit crowded. So went with Honda Odyssey. I still love it after 10 years. No longer hauling dogs but I often have large loads, just wish removing the seats didn't require the Hulk.

Element's passing is indeed sad as it was perfect for dog hauling.
Last February we went car shopping to replace our Jeep Liberty. Moving to TX increased our city driving measurably and 17 miles to the gallon wasn't working. My first choice was an Element but I found they were discontinued. :( So we drove just about everything that got decent mileage and room for three sheepdogs. We finally settled on the new Prius wagon. The dogs have just as much room as the Jeep and we are averaging 42mpg. :yay: If necessary, I can fit a full size crate in the back.

What could be better, cutting gas cost by 60%+ and still haul all the Sheepies you want. To date we have had up to 5 in the back. :wag:
We've rented a Chrysler Town and Country three times now so that we could do long, cross-country drives with the girls. Adam knows I want one, and that we HAVE to have one before getting our third sheepdog.
I'd like to get rid of this:

And get something like this:

Image

The '99 Blazer's getting a little old. It needs new tires, just about dies (like a dropped cylinder or a bad lean miss) when giving any appreciable throttle in weather less than 32 degrees F (mechanics don't know why but want to start throwing parts at it at my expense), has a bearing noise that no one can seem to isolate, the steering is sloppy (probably steering gear box), driver side hinge pin holes are worn (door sags bad), power mirror controls don't work, only 2 speakers work in the radio, clear coat is flaking off the hood (body shop that painted it last didn't know what they were doing), gets bad mileage in the winter, and it has 154K miles on it.
So I'd like to move up a few years and move down in mileage, get some better MPG, quietness, smoothness, and peace of mind.
I have a trailblazer, hubby a tahoe If I had to get another vehicle I would love an Element. but alas they no longer make them a chevy express van would be my dream...but too expensive for me. I drool everytime I go to a dog event and see one I like the SUV's especially the tahoe because it has great towing capacity for the horse trailer but since we no longer have horses and I am on the fence about getting another The express would do fine!!!
This was from a long time ago, but I am new to the site . . . someone mentioned a Subaru Forester . . . I have one. I bought it for the all wheel drive (Winters in rural NY) and my dog.
The problem is they don't run long enough to transport anything. 120,000 miles and 3 motors so far. Head gaskets are a problem (60,000 mi. per motor rebuild). Add Waterpump problems. Add Timing chain problems. OH! The design of the "boxer Motor", you have to pull the moter to work on any of these items. $2000 before you start any work . . . .
I also have an old Geo tracker (180,000 miles) convertible. Chloie prefers this, it is dependable (at least the last 2 winters when the Subaru was broke down), lost of room in the back for her, low enough and open enough that she can get front to back or move around. Yea, I know it's louder . . . or maybe it just seems to be because it runs ....................

Never apologize for the volume of your car. Every Harley owner and every hot rod owner will happily tell your that loud pipes save lives. If they can hear you, surely they'll see you. Pumping up the volume  of you pipes can ensure this... I know this from experience!

This doesn't quite apply to all cars. Nobody wants to hear those 4 cyl econoboxes with fart cans for mufflers. Just.....awful.
Good point Mark. I should have added a qualifier in there.

My hot rod was a V8 and an attention getter from many angles. But when I got on the throttle with the open headers, I knew there wasn't anyone within a 100 yards who didn't notice me. This was a car that I couldn't sneak into, or out of my driveway with...

I have a Impreza, subaru, and it work for taking Tilly she rides shotgun, Camille and Piper in the back seat, it works, the onlyproblem is when my partner wants to go with us, we have to leave one dog at home other wise she will have to ride in the trunk, dogs dont give up her seats very easy hehehehe
