What to do about a smelly dog?!

Hello all!

I know this forum is for OES owners, which, unfortunately we don't have. However, we DO have an 18 week old Newfie pup, and have LOTS of questions. I've literally spent days searching, and my Googler is sore, but I haven't been able to find any other group of individuals who seem so informed and caring than those here. So, I thought that I would stop in and see if you would answer some questions for me.

Nanook (our pup) is great. But he STINKS to high heaven! It's a mixture of pee and puppy breath. He's been experimenting with lifting his leg, but he doesn't turn his body, and he ends up peeing all over his front leg! :headbang: That, in combination with the fact that he always sticks his face in the water bowl, makes for a pretty smelly pup. I don't want to bathe him too often, but does anyone have any suggestions for treating the smell in between baths!?

So, thanks in advance for all the answers, and, if you don't mind, I may end up sticking around. As long as you accept me, even though I don't have an OES.

Keep some old towels around and dry his face every time he drinks. It is a pain, but it will help. And go buy baby wipes in bulk! They are great for a quick wipe down after he pees. I have heard some folks suggest putting a bit of corn starch in the fur and then brushing it out, just to kind of take the odour away and freshen him up. I am a Newf myself and am rather partial to the breed! One day, when I am rich and retired, I would love to add a Newf to the family.
Welcome to the forum :) I LOVE newfs! Of course we don't mind that you don't have an oes....

Anyway, 18 weeks and trying to lift his leg?!!! I've never heard of a dog at any breed doing that so young.... he must be really "all boy"
I'd say baby powder on the legs that he's getting pee on, sprinkle on, let it sit and brush it out.... maybe some baking soda too.
Re the face wetting, newfs are notoriously wet mouthed to begin with even when there's no water in sight.... at the shows newf people carry around a rag at all times and just wipe it off periodically.
If he's stinky around the beard you can bath just that area but blow drying it afterwards is key otherwise you're wasting your time.

There are water bowls with a plastic lid that just has a hole small enough for their muzzle and not enough to get them too wet, you could look into one of those too.

Good luck! I'd love to see pics :)
I actually made him a drool bib, and it's already come in SO handy. Best DIY I've ever done. And he started trying to lift his leg after he saw my future in-laws' dog doing it on their last playdate. So either he's all boy, or he really wants to be like his friend haha. Either way, I can't wait til he quits trying or gets it right, because it's a pain in the butt.

I'll definitely post pics as soon as I can figure out how. I have a favorite of him where he looks so handsome! And I'll have to stick around now. There's so much good advice here, it's an absolutely fantastic resource for any dog owner. :)
Welcome to our little furry corner of the web!
We want pictures! Having had a Newf.........wow, in a previous life.......I know any pee on all that fluff can get stinky. Is he tending his private parts yet? Then you get pee stink on the head, right where you want to kiss.

Newfs have the oilier coat so will be a bit more "stinky" than other breeds, so watch it. It's not really stink, just dog smell. Don't bathe too much, they need the oil for their "water rescues." Use the baby wipes where necessary.......keep the mouth dry (LOL!! Good luck there) to avoid fungus......and accept a bit more smell. Having a dog means accepting another body odor into the house......hope yours also doesn't develop gas problems.
I love newfs too and if I could I'd have one of those to go along with the oes.

Please send pictures when you can and welcome to the forum, great place to get answers.
I went ahead and joined the forum, so I'm the original Guest.

And thanks, Ron! I'm super excited to have found this forum. :)

I'm glad that you mentioned that, because I thought that our boy was just obsessed with his nether region!! 8O But yes, he has started tending to it, and yes, it definitely makes the smell much worse!

Here's a little picture of Noodle, as I call him. This is a few weeks old, where he weighed about thirty pounds. Now, at eighteen weeks, he's already at forty-five, so he's going to be a big boy!! :D

Welcome, and your Noodle boy is very cute. :aww: :aww: Lansdeer too - nice!
Wow... That's gonna be a big dog!

Welcome to the group.
Vance
Welcome! Noodle can be an honorary OES. He's got the coloring down. :D

Oscar drools alot for a sheepdog, so his beard is always wet, even though we wipe his face after every dip in the water bowl. I put him in the tub and do a spot wash, consisting of his face, paws, and "undercarriage" a couple of times a week, and then use a dog dryer to make sure he's dry to the skin. Cuts down on the odor and prevents yeast issues.

Yeah, we'll let in Lanseers, LOL! We are all hopeless dog lovers.

Yeah Harry always wants me to kiss his head and I tell him he smells like pee up there. He thinks it is "funny."
Where's Kerry when we need her? 8) Actually, I just got off the phone with her. All OES chat, though. Previous Newf related discussion seem to be centered on washing drool off walls? :sidestep:

Welcome! He's adorable.

Kristine
Yeah, I was part of that,  Sponge mop only goes up so far.... I don't miss those days.
Chris Christiansen makes a product called Miracle Air. One of my girls gets a sticky butt from anal gland issues. I'll often wash her, rather than let her go stinky (CC has some good bath products for frequent bathers as well, to keep your pup's skin from getting dry) but if I don't have the time, Miracle Air really helps! Its supposed to be sprayed on, but I'll wet a wash cloth with it and sort of "bath" the smelly area.

Hope that helps you!

We've actually been approached before by people who thought he was an OES pup. :)

And Kerry, he actually hasn't started truly drooling yet. He just recently discovered how much fun it was to play in his water bowl/stick his face in it and then 'sharing' it with mommy and daddy. :D

And I'll definitely have to try that Miracle Air! Sounds like it would at least help when surprise company comes over. Honestly, the smell really doesn't bother me, but people look at me like I can't take care of my dog because he smells like pee!!
I just wanted to say welcome to the forum!

Hi there, I've read the various posts for a while now - and I felt I had to reply to your post. Love the picture and his name. This may sound like a silly question but is his paws yellow in colour from the pee? Have you checked his litle man as he may have an infection.
