Gotcha Day For Virgie Ty!!

Nine years ago today Michele and I excitedly loaded up my faithful old Ford Aerostar van with Martin Zephram and Gidget Nerys (oh yeah the two footers were part of that load-up to) and set off on a wonderful adventure to Tarwood's Reg'd Kennels. Our goal that day was to get back with our "first" furson Virgil Tiberius. You see we had been accepted onto Diane Buckland's waiting list and sent a deposit on this boy months before, even before Ch. Tarawood's Chantilly Lace had been bred to BIS,BISS,Can.Am. Ch Raffles Just Ewe Wait and so he was "ours" before he was even born and so in that regard he was the "first" Bobtail in the family even though Martin Zephram was older than Virgil and actually arrived home before Virgil did. Through e-mail correspondence I had worked hard to earn her trust and a place on her waiting list. We had long been looking forward to getting Virgil and were certainly more than ready to have him at home. Diane had kept us up to date on his progress from birth and though he was adopted sight-unseen we knew he would be perfect for us. I had long known of Tarawood's and had implicit faith in Diane's breeding skills and her ability to select the puppy that met our list of "wants", not the least of which was show potential with at least one blue eye as a bonus!! My faith was well justified although I think Michele didn't quite understand and was less certain as she was then new to the Bobtail world, in a new country and had had little exposure to the dog show world. She certainly didn't know much about the Canadian Bobtail community back then!
Needless to say 600km each way was a long trip, especially with two young pups (Martin was just over 5 months and Gidget was 4 1/2 months) but off we went. The trip and wait were well worthwhile. Oh the Virgil Tiberius was one adorable, "albeit fancy show dog", fluff ball. As soon as Michele got a look at him she had exclaimed that he was a fancy show dog with a whitewall! Virgil had, and still has, a white splash on his right stifle which before his coat grew long and diffused his markings did very much look like a whitewall tyre. Even then we could see that Virgil was not going to be easily "mastered"! He had attitude then and there and would only ever get and display more of it!! We were at Diane's for a bit over an hour going over the contract, the "owners manual" that came with him and other relevant information about him and Tarawood's in general.
Eight hours since we had left home it was time to start our return journey. Both of the two footers wanted to hold him on the way home, but Virgil, already being Virgil was having none of it. HE decided that he would sit on the bench seat between the two of them and divide his time and attentions to each as he saw fit. We had a couple of stops on the way home, one at a freeway rest station where the then small pack caused quite a stir while Michele and the two footers were inside and I had the van tailgate up and was giving them a drink and bit of food before Michele came back to help give them a potty break on the fine gravel parking lot borders. At one point I was a bit uncomfortable with one woman who actually picked Virgil up without permission and I had to politely insist he be put back in the van. The trip home took the better part of 8 hours so some 16 hours after we started we introduced Virgil to his new home.

It was a very long and tiring day -the two footers were bored out of their skulls by the ride - but we had our Virgil Tiberius home. Virgil would prove to be a handfull of challenges with all his attitude, desire to run the household, total dismisal the two footers, keeping all other four footers in line, usually listening to Michele but not always and for many years on an daily basis considering his chances of usurping my status as overall pack leader. It was very common to see him look up at me after a command and you could see in is eyes "okay day, I'll do that today because today I'll reluctantly give it to you that you are the boss. But dad, tomorrow - tomorrow is another day Dad, and Dad we will revist this whole thing tomorrow dad." For the first few years of his life this was an at least once daily routine. He became Michele's "drill seargent" barking out his orders as to what he wanted at any given time, be it food, water, walking, fuss etc. He would literally haul Matthew around the parkay flooring when they played tug-of-war with his rope bones. But through all his bravado and even beligerance Virgil has a very loving side he brings out for Michele and I as well as a few close family friends who visit frequently.

Nine years on Virgil's body is giving out prematurely and his calender is running our far before his time should be due. He is far less prone to order the other four footers around, let alone me but his mind is still razor sharp, he watches everything, he has plenty to tell me and reminds me of any missed routines! As ever he loves his mommy and daddy no end as we do him. He implicitly trusts that we will be there for him when he needs us, I hope we have proven worthy of his devotion, trust and love.

Diane, again thank you for breeding this true gem of a son and then entrusting him to us even though there were others on your "waiting list" before we contacted you. He has been an incredible blessing and joy in our lives. I cannot imagine what life would have been without him and ultimately his little girl Dawn Eline. Yes we would have still had two male Bobtails and one way or another a little girl Bobtail as we had made many contacts looking for a second Bobtail. But Virgil and all he has wrought in our lives has been truly unique and memorable.

While I want to celebrate a 10th gotcha day with Virgil the fact is I am lucky to be celebrating this his ninth. His body is ravaged with illness and I know in my heart it was only the return of Dawn Eline 2 1/2 years ago that has gotten him to this point. Another gotcha day is unlikley even with her love and majic touch on her Daddy V. But today the Lindon family celebrates. Virgy, we love you kiddo, you are the greatest son possible just as is Martin and you have endlessly enriched our lives and those of your adopted brothers and sisters as well as your baby girl.

Happy 9th Gotcha Day super son.

Lots of Love,

Mommy and Daddy.

Happy Gotcha Day Virgil Tiberius! May your "reign of terrier" continue!

I have had the honour of meeting Mr. Virgil Tiberius. He is most hospitable to our Mady when we visit and patiently supervises when Carl gives us grooming lessons. He is an adorable snugglebug of a dog and I hope to see him soon (maybe very soon, check your email as David is trying to arrange a sheepie date!).

Hope to hug you soon in person, Virgie!! :hearts: :ghug: :hearts: :ghug: :hearts: :ghug:
A wonderful dog from a wonderful line and breeder, how fortunate. I'm sorry he is ailing, 9 isn't that old, but when other forces come into play, it is a comforting goal. Each time you have mentioned Virgil Ty.......I could sense the love and devotion you two have. Enjoy and cherish the time you have together.
Happy Gotcha Day Virgil Tiberius!

Virgil, you are a lucky dog to have a Daddy and Mommy who speak so eloquently of you. I had to wipe a small tear away.

So Happy 9th Gotcha Day :bdcake:

Since Ziggi lives in the same area, she would be honoured to meet you and your family some day soon.

Well we are always happy to meet and host Bobtails and their people, be they local or further afield and just visiting the Ottawa area. All it takes is an e-mail or PM and we can make it happen. Let us know, looking forward to new Bobtail family friends.

Thanks and Cheers

Carl
Once again love, you have eloquently delivered a wonderful tribute to one of our children. VT is and ever will have a part of my heart. I hate every day that I have to be separated from my furry children (and Carl too... ) but this is particulary difficult as the days are numbered and so very precious.

Virgie boy...know mommy loves you boss boy.

P.S. please don't kill Brigham...he's a royal arse but he's our royal arse...just tell him to stay on his throne(couch) and leave you alone!!!
