What would you do w/ a multimillion USD Jackpot?

Imagine you won the PowerBall/MegaMillions Jackpot.

Let's say it's $120 Million worth.

Cash.

How long do you think it would take for you to pull yourself together and go claim your prize? Would you go public or you'd try to keep it as private as possible? What would be the first vacation destination that you'd go to?

And if there were a person you consider worthier than you to win the Jackpot, who would that be?

Ohh, I'm sure there are millions of people who are worthier than I to win a jackpot. We can start with people who actually buy a ticket!

I used to think long and hard about this question and had big dreams for the money. Now I'd just be happy to have my mortgage and all my bills paid and enough to live on without having to worry about a job.

Someone else can dream about worrying about which charities are worthy for me.
I would hire a lawyer to try to hide my identity as much as possible.

I view a jackpot like that as **** *** money.
I wouldn't have to work or be dependent on anybody or anything.
I could do what I want, when I wanted (within legal limits of course), and wouldn't have to answer to anyone for having done it.
OMG! I would spend it in a minute!!!!!And I would let everyone know I was the winner! Why hide yourself???? Nope, not me...I won and am doing the happy dance to show it!
having a friend whom i refer to as santa claus with a net worth of approx. half that has taught me that sharing is the greatest gift and fun there is. everyday is christmas for him as he spends all his time helping others. i've forever marveled at his perception of how to help others out on an individual basis and small charities that deal directly with recipients.
so besides family needs and some privacy, i'd be ready for being santa claus ll. 8)
I would take care of family (including me) and then see about doing some good with it: spreading it around, helping things (and people) grow.

Worthier than me? Well, that would probably be most people. I think I would be quiet about it. I know I have some long lost relatives out there and I'd let them be long lost, to tell the truth.
Create and LLC to hide behind and disappear from normal life. I'd still be on the 'net because there is a certain amount of anonymity if done right. And since I have my security certs, I'm sure I can do that.

Donate much of what I need to finish my life with investments after blowing a little on a couple things that would make me smile daily. Some would be stashed away for later, read on.

Slowly reappear, maybe... at which point I'd become a guy like the guy in the old newspaper column 'Thanks a Million', Percy Ross. I always loved that idea...

Vance
I would take the money and build a not for profit dog facility, like Dawn and her gang use. I would give most of the money away, though. That kind of money could ruin a person. I would also get a puppy...
I would stay hush, hush about the $$$$. I would take care of my family first and then would donate to charities like the "Reach Out" program at our church. I would love to be like the Santa Claus who steps in to help, quietly.

I would like to travel, to Ireland for my first trip. :)
Well, forget remaining anonymous....you'll get media coverage locally big time. You'd better be prepared to change phone numbers and install burgler alarms and start using a post office box.......if they are around much longer.

Realize if you take the cash option you only get 50% then there's taxes on it........at least 40%. What remains is still nice.

There are many charities I'd sure like to help. Personally I don't want a large house in a fancy neighborhood, flashy cars.......I'm past that. There are a few personal things........like an enclosed swimming pool for exercise instead of having to drive into town and share "my pool" with riff raff.

International travel no longer interests me, but I might enjoy visiting the US more.

If I could come up with a business idea, I'd like to do that strictly as an investor......to put people back to work........making products here, not an import business.
I'd buy a ranch and also travel a lot. Of course help family and friends and a few charities....
I would donate anonymously, help family and close friends, buy property and set up a facility for animals, buy a big RV vehicle and travel around and pick up animals in shelters and bring them to resceus and my new place. Hire staff on 24hr basis to help care for these animals in a "home like" setting with all the trimmings. Oh yea, I would go on a cruise. And get another sheepie puppy :)

I like dogmom's ideas. I would share with our kids of course, taxes don't bother me. I would get another house down by the Milwaukee area, nothing fancy just nice, maybe a little car to run around with. A big 5th wheel to see the country. Want to see the north east states, eat seafood, see the north western area, up into different areas of Canada.

I would be afraid of investing, don't have much experience in that so really would have to learn about safe innvestments and try to do some good.

It's fun to imagine it even if it will never happen but I'd definitely not want to be known, don't want my ex to ever get wind of that one, I'd share with him like he did with me.
I'd quit my job in 3 seconds flat! Then I'd buy a 6-7' grand piano, probably a Bosendorfer, and we'd have to buy a bigger house for it (not a big monster house, a modest house with a conservatory for the piano added on :D ). I would definitely look at giving large amount of it away, to family and friends, maybe even set up a foundation to do so, to a lot of different charities for a lot of different causes. I'd want to do a lot of travelling, but with that kind of money, I would look into the possibilities of doing so with Mady. I would be tempted to buy Ferraris etc, but I would feel a bit ashamed to go overboard on luxuries, I would not want to rub this wealth in people's noses. Maybe a new Lotus Elise, and an older classic Ferrari, but that's it! And a farm like Dawn's! :D

Oh, and I'd buy Kim a nice box of chocolates and a puppy.

Man you're stingy....only 1 puppy
We talk about this almost every day. Unfortunately, I'm not exaggerating. Mr. J wakes up and the first thing out of his mouth is "today we won!"

So the plan is...... Move to Colorado. We're dying from this heat!!!
Together we open a business there. Of course, I'm the baker. He handles everything else. Crazy ...I know, but we even have chairs, decor, the works already picked out because it's talked about TOO much.
Charity
Savings - including kids college
...and lastly, Mr. J wants a truck and ......sheep.
Oh, I want a boob job
First, I'll hire a lawyer. I'd rather keep my privacy. Then, I'll claim my winnings. Next, I'll hire financial advisor.
I'll go to my Fatherland for a surprise visit. My mom hasn't hugged the girls for almost 5 years...
From that point on, it'll be mostly charity work. I even have a list of charities and rescues I'll to donate to.
I'll have also a charity of my own, directed to education of gifted minority and low-income children.
I'll set up a Free-Spay-and-Neuter clinic on wheels and send it off all over the US. I'll start adopting dogs, up to three at any given time, train them, CGC and therapy certify them, and sign us up for different programs.
On a personal note, I'd like to live in our current house. It's very ... ergonomic, in a lovely area. And I like our neighbors and public schools. That would also help in raising our kids just as we've done so far - without spoiling them.
I'll buy a more green-oriented car, will renovate the house (using local workers only) to make its carbon footprint the size of squirrel's paw.
I'll take vacations twice a year with the first destination being a Disney cruise, the second - African Safari.
And, you bet, I'll hire an assistant!

Good for you! I hope you win soon!
We're the same where we always say what we'd do but also never buy tickets. It's not working out so well...

Someone here won the powerball a few years ago, and before they claimed it, they did all of the pre-work like set up an anonymous trust and had the money go to that, so they were not identified in the press. I guess I like that idea not in that I'd want to hide so much as I wouldn't want to risk my family's safety. In that regard it seems prudent to stay as anonymous as possible about it.

As for us, we'd create our own charitable foundation with arms that work on the things we care about and just make sure our future and families were taken care of and were able to live comfortably. I would love for my kids to head those efforts up after they finished their education. A little traveling, too.
If I won, I'd build a modest house on a couple acre lot.
Then I'd build 3 rather large outbuildings. One would be storage for the cars I have now and all the cars I would collect. A second building would be a fully loaded professional style garage with every tool known to both mechanical garages and body shops. The third building would be a fully equipped machine shop.

I'd probably start taking stock American vehicles from the mid '60s to the mid '70s and restore & update them using modern parts and systems so that they go, stop, handle, ride, etc WAY better than they did when they were stock (we call them resto-mods or pro touring cars). Then I'd sell them and hope to make money.

I'd make sure my mother never had to worry about money and give some to my siblings.

I'd probably invest the rest and live off of the returns of the investments. No need to have a job (see my earlier post).

You probably love Jay Leno's garage, I gather :)

Oh yes! He has some nice iron!
Yep, I would hire a lawyer and keep it hush, hush. First thing would be quitting my job and telling my boss off. Next would be family, I would do trusts so no one could blow it and then come back with their hand out. Next would be charity. I have a few favorites that would get some.

For "ME" I would travel. I love going to new places and seeing new things. Most of it would be the US because there is still so many places I want to go, and that way my boys could come. My bucket list is long with very few things checked off so I thing I could keep myself busy without getting bored :D :D :D

Last but not least...I'll never have to see snow or be cold if I don't want to....and I don't want to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You could come to Canada, your boys could come here too!!

That works for me!
Sadly, I live SO close to Canada, but only twice have been there. And the one time was just a "cross the border, drive up the road a bit" to say I did it.
The 2nd time we were on a road trip, cut through driving out east. Stopped at Niagara, then ducked back into the US.

Oh sorry, forgot about that. We have been once, did the Niagara thing and then to Toronto and back to the US Via Michigan. We spent about a week there and did some fun things...I would go back.

Now if I could just win the lottery...and yes we buy tickets and I'm in a pool at work.
Fun topic! I would take care of family and close friends and splurge on a few things and then...

I would like to set up a corporation that would help people start their own businesses. I would not want any return from them but would ask that they at some point help one other person start a business.

Of course there are a few causes that I would like to donate too...and I would like to be able to just give what I wanted to who I wanted when I could help out and make a difference for people in need!

Would not move but would build a second home in the mountains--a nice modern log cabin!

Like one of those micro credit places that have helped women start their own businesses in other countries. Great idea!

Splendid suggestion! I'm adding it to my must-do things :)
I'd be anywhere that my fur babies and my husband are!!! Money gives us choices...I have no money therefore I need options.

But home is still anywhere my sweetheart is...and that is not currently by my side...*sigh*
I dream of this all the time:) I would help good friends and family and start a Black dog Rescue!!!
oh cindy,
you've got my curiosity, why black dogs?

:wag:

Cindy Lou...if anybody deserves to win that lottery it is you!!! Of course you better share

Who in the world would just drop everyhting in one day to deliver an E-Collar to a friend ..come home and have a rescue drop by for a shave down?
You rock Ms Cindy!

I hope one day you can start that Black Dog Rescue that you want!
Not that you don't do it all anyway!

If I win the lottery I will share with you!
Then, outside of taking care of family I would build a ranch for the dogs to RUN!

Sometimes we have a few extra paws around here that could use a little space!
Google black dog syndrome Black dog, big dog, old dog any dog rescue!!! Black dogs are the last to be adopted and the first to be uthanised.... and of course all of my chubby friends and I would go to a fat spa and relax and slim down :sidestep:
thanks cindy,
never realized that. i've been the guy that takes home the big black dog. :cow:
and never any regrets.
