Mysterious water on kitchen counter

For the seond time in a month, this morning there was water on my kitchen counter. Lots of water. Facing the sink, there is a counter to my right, a corner, then the counter with a cabinet, then the diswasher. Standard L shape. The water is on the counter between the sink and the dishwasher.

I know enough physics to know that water doesn't flow UP, so it couldn't be from the dishwasher (which I haven't run in 2 days). I checked the ceiling and cabinet about the counter. Bone dry. I felt under the counter. Bone dry. I checked the items on the counter for leakage but nothing (there was nothing with water in it). The only thing I can think is that I keep a small box of water softener on the counter and maybe it pulled water out of the air. That is a total long shot.

What else could cause this?

Mystery indeed. Is it wet to the sink? Could water be seeping out from under the faucet plate against the sink. Do you have a sprayer on the faucet?

Try turning off the water under the sink before bed and see if the puddle returns.

To track it down, draw a circle of flour outside the usual area before bed and in the a.m. you might have a clue as to the direction it is coming.
Could the kitchen faucet be leaking? It would not be unusual for there to be a slight, almost unnoticeable slope to the counter top that would account for the accumulation of water from a very slight leak. Is there any sign of leakage in the ceiling at all? Any water pipes behind the wall going upstairs, that might account for slight leaking that seeps out under the cabinets but onto the counter top?
As far as I remember, it wasn't wet to the sink. And the weird thing is, it wasn't wet when I first got up. I got ready for work and as I was leaving I noticed the water. I will double check the faucet, but the mysterious water isn't constant and I would think it would always appear when I turn on the sink.

No pipes in the wall. I checked the ceiling and cabinets and no signs of overhead leaks.

Maybe my condo has ghosts?
paula,
how about dripping counter surfers? 8)
That is really strange--My sprayer does leak occasionally and I find water but it is obvious where it came from. Hmmmm :lmt:
Could it be ghost pee? :sidestep:

Does your dishwasher have an air gap on the counter?
Do you have a garbage disposer in the sink?
Is there a bathroom above the kitchen?
Is the kitchen sink running slow at all?
Do you leave a plug in the sink bowl?

I am wondering if there may be a slow or clog or something and water is backup up through the air break, perhaps when you are showering of flushing or draining a bath upstairs, or when running the disposer.

Is it very humid outside and cold? Is it possible it is pooled condensation?

The sprayer is an interesting thought.
Or a cat..... :twitch:
Air vent on the dishwasher! I had never heard of one until this new kitchen started going in! Good place to look especially if there's an upstairs bathroom hooked into the same drain pipe as the kitchen.

The dishwasher has vents in the front. Hot humid air comes out when I run it. It is not near the counter.

What is an air gap? And why would it be on the counter? What would it look like?

No garbage disposal, no sprayer, no bathroom above, no clog, no plug in the sink.

No water today. Like I said, it's not constant. It's happened 2 or 3 times. It's very odd.

No cats, no dogs, no animals in my house. Just me.

And perhaps ghosts.
Paula...

Obviously you have a ghost sheepie :wag:

It occasionally counter-surfs and leaves a drool spot 8)
paula,
make sure toilet lids are down. 8)
paula must have been duffy my famous counter surfer he like to drool
An air gap would look like a little tower either on the sink or the counter a couple of inches tall. It serves as a safeguard against drain water backing up into the dishwasher and contaminating the clean dishes.

I'm voting for escaped ice cubes from iced-tea making! :D
Wow I am experiencing the same issue...water on my counter...1/4" of water at times!!! There is an air gap and it doesn't appear wet...thinking there is a block in the garbage hose that may be causing the water...not always happening either...mysterious. So looking for solution and to see if I can fix it myself...rather not have to call in a plumber...would probably take them 2 minutes to fix.
so still reading about what could cause leak and what to do about it...but truly feel it is in the hoses somehow.
