My big Bruiser GSD

There is one less "hound" at crazy acres.Bruiser was an older dog when I pulled him from the Harford Co shelter here in MD, he had some hip concerns and there were 5 GSD's there at the time. I went to see who needed help. The shelter manager said he was nice but no interest. I had heard that he might be put down if no one stepped up. I was leaving for a vacation in SC and would be gone for 10 days. I told Blaine(the shelter manager) if I came back and Gailielo (that was his name) was gone but not adopted I would blow the doors off the shelter!! He said he would hold him When I returned he was still there and I took him home. None of the local GSD rescues would not take him so I called my rescue buddy libby she said of course and he was a TOH dog. He was such a good boy and my son fell in love with him. We lost our GSD bailey suddenly (spleen ruptured) and we all decided to just adopt him. Jason called him Bruiser. He was Jasons dog but he followed me everywhere When I had my knee replaced he stood next to my bed when the PT came. When I could only walk a few feet with the walker on the driveway he was there When I walked the fields he was right with me. When he went lame in his rear I rushed him to one vet after another . $12,000 later we knew he would never walk again(this was Nov.) but he was my loyal friend and It was no problem taking care of him It was a labor of love. He loved me so and had to be right with me Beds in every room of the house even a mesh cot style bed outside on the deck. He would pull himself to me if I stayed too long in one room without him. He was totally devoted to me (as I to him) His last UTI was probably more than it appeared He was doing well and monday night when I went to take him out for the night he just gushed blood. I knew it was not good.Probably abdominal tumors or worse. I called my vet but she would have to do it LATE so I went to JVC and a much loved vet (Dr Breen) helped me. but before we went Guinness brought his favorite toy ,a stuffed dog, and dropped it at bruisers front feet as if to say you can play with this if you like. Atticus licked his face. The earth trembled around 2 but we did not notice I was too sad. Even when driving to the vet (I bought him chicken nuggets but he would not touch them) he pulled himself to the front of the suv to check and make sure I was in the front seat every few minutes. When we arrived I took his bed and him into the waiting room. There was a dashound pup waiting when the puppy passed bruiser gave him a kiss. I held my loving, loyal friend in my arms and told him goodbye He went peacfully in my arms I have never had a dog go so easy. Even the vet agreed. She hoped it was of some comfort to know that. He was ready to go wherever wonderful dogs go. He will be creamated and stay in my bedroom with the rest. He ashes will be with me when I leave this earth. I have not moved his bed but will in time I always save another dog of the same breed when I have to say good bye to one of mine. I guess Denali just came in time. He is a dog Kathy Buck helped me save in NC.I am so sad and miss him so but it was the last thing I could do for my big bruiser. Some of you met him at my last sheepdog event last Oct. I could say so much more about Bruiser but it hurts so much. He loved me so and I him.

Hunt with the hounds and swim with the retrievers big guy. Go and run with the ones that went before you and be there to greet the ones yet to come, I know you will be there when I arrive sweet boy.

Cindy,
So sorry to hear about Bruiser.

Crying with/for you. Sounds so familiar.

It seems as though dogs will do anything for those who love them. How can we not return the favor, even when it is so hard to let them go.
awwww My sheepdog friends always come thru for me :ghug: Those that know me , understand my love for the GSD breed. (and Labs and sheepdogs) he was just a stellar example of the breed. I always wondered how he ended up at the shelter. He did know how to open doors so I wonder if he opened a door and tried to follow his owner and got lost, or if hard times left him on his own. He never left my side. I remember one day I saw someone with a chain saw in the back of the property cutting trees. Soooo Bruiser and I walked the fields to see what was going on. He was a presence to reckon with 8O As we got to the back of our property a man saw him and started yelling I don't speak english!!! I said well he dosen't either he speaks german and you better tell me why you are cutting down my trees. Another man came running over and explained they were from the gas company (a line runs in the back of our property)and were clearing the line. Bruiser just watched me in case he had to get the situation under control and I said you better get your help to speak the english language and let people know when you are stomping around their land ! We turned and went back to the house I bet they had to get a change of cloths  Whenever I took him out everyone said how georgous he was (Now I am the first to admit my sheepdogs have the wow factor not my sheps and labs) but he was stunning. It has been a week and I have moved his things and have been able to come down the steps without crying. We just never have them long enough. Thank you all for your warm thoughts It really helps knowing others understand. Guess its time to post to my GSD forum.
Reading this wonderful tribute to Bruiser has the tears running down my face. :( You were both very lucky to have each other. :hearts: :hearts: You have my deepest sympathy.

Me too!!! So sorry :ghug:
I am so sorry for your loss of Bruiser. He sounds like he loved you so much for saving him! What a kind and gentle and loyal beast he was.

I understand about the stairs, I kept seeing my boy out of the corner of my eye and bursting into tears for a long time. :-...(
Thank you for giving Bruiser such a fantastic life. He isn't far away he is watching you, you can sense him wherever you go. He is tucked safe in your heart. Tears and hugs for you. xx
So sorry for your loss...your tribute made me feel like I knew him. Our furkids give us such unconditional love...so glad you returned his love and made his days on earth better.
I'm sorry for your loss. :ghug: :ghug:
Awww, that is so sad, and so wonderful all at the same time.

The love and devotion of a dog to their human is such a gift :hearts:

:ghug: :ghug: to you Cindy :ghug: :ghug:
Cindy, I was so sorry when you called to tell me about Bruiser. Few would do what you did for this big, gentle guy. You gave him the best possible chance of being mobile again and continued to love and care for him when that didn't happen. It wasn't easy for you or your family, physically, financially or emotionally.

It seems that you post all too often in the Rainbow Bridge section of this forum. I don't know of anyone who has a bigger heart and is more dedicated to dogs who truly are the "underdogs". Keep doing all the wonderful deeds you do. You may be crazy but "crazy" just looks right on you! :hearts:

I am SO sorry, Cindy. Dear, dear boy. Tears are falling
for you but what a wonderful dog to have experienced!
