Bubbler

For those of you not familiar with this term, aka Drinking fountain.

Have you ever trained your dog to drink from one? We started this in NC last year when we were there and the dogs were thirsty. We start the water and tap the edge to get them to jump and put their front paws on there.

Simon is my smart dog. We went for a long walk/run this morning and halfway through I knew they were thirsty and I spotted a bubbler and took them over for a drink. Simon knew right away what I wanted and jumped up right away. Gar...I had to lift his front paws up so he finally figured it out.

There were some little kids not far away who stopped playing to watch this. It is so darned cute and handy when your mom forgets the water.

Not a bubbler, but our dogs love sprinklers. We walk them on the local campus (possibly not officially legal, but maintenance likes us a lot because we always pick up after our dogs who have become unofficial ambassadors for the university and greeters/consolers for homesick freshmen). There are lots of sprinklers, if you go at the right time and if not, there's always the fountains. Archie always picked exactly the right spot to stand on the ledge so that the best spout of water was available. Sophie and Sherman also like the fountains and will go wading if they're given a chance.

But back to water fountains/bubblers: I haven't ever had the occasion to try to teach my dogs. I will say that when it was time to get a new fridge, the kids all advocated for one of the fancy ones with water and ice in the door. No way was I going to try that. I knew they'd figure out how to get both, probably when everyone was away for several hours.........
When my kids were younger, and I taught the 4-H dog training program (one of my 20 year, summer long volunteer projects...), we were in a curling club. It was relatively cool most of the summer (from the ice over the winter and the building stayed closed up), but it was humid. Really humid.
It had an old porcelain drinking fountain, and over the course of each summer, every dog learned to drink from it!! :clappurple: The shorter dogs needed a boost, but kids and dogs (and me) drank all summer long from it :D :D
There is a water hose at the snack shed at the local park -- mulligan knows it as his personal water bubbler!
