Ick, ick, ICK - FLEAS!!!

Okay, so fleas have been worse this year then I EVER remember them being before. Which is surprising, because last year when we brought Levi into our home he was CRAWLING with the critters.... yuck!

I've dosed all the cats and dogs with Frontline Plus, cleaned bedding and vacuumed like crazy to get rid of the critters, but it seems like I'm still finding HUGE fleas on the dogs. I pull them off and DESTROY THEM (or just flush them down the toilet, whatever is handier).

I'm not sure if the fleas are coming from the outside and that is causing the re-infestation. We have a half acre to an acre behind our privacy fence that is a wooded area that separates our property from the nearby trucking company. So raccoons, moles, opossums (ick, ick, ick!!!), and other critters can still climb over or under our fence and get into our yard.

Does ANYONE have some advise on what products I can get to finally ERADICATE these fleas? I feel so bad when I see my kitties and sheepies scratching at these gross bugs.

It is a long process, battle with many fronts. You are doing some, but have you tried IGR in the yard? Insect growth regulator? Think birth control for fleas.

Erin,
Are you sure they're fleas?
You say "HUGE" but fleas are very small.

You can spray your yard. Most pet stores carry some kind of insecticide to kill insects in the yard. I like the kind that hooks up to your hose and delivers the product easily and quickly.
Of course I wouldn't let the dogs into the yard after that for a VERY long time (I'm paranoid about chemicals and pets).
They are definitely fleas, but they seem pretty big, at least a few of them seemed larger than normal. When I dosed the dogs and cats, it seemed to immediately kill the fleas and eliminated the scratching, but I'm still finding them. All I can think of is that it's coming from outdoors. Josh and I are bite free, I haven't seen any hopping around the house either. We were hit with a long heat wave that, I'm SURE, helped incubate the fleas and really aided in their population.

I'm always reluctant with chemicals, because like you, Mark, I don't like to expose my pets to pesticides. I really hate to have to dose them with flea medicine too, but I don't see what else I could do. Does anyone know of any 'safe' (if that makes sense) pesticides that I wouldn't have to worry about exposure with the dogs?

The IGR is safe around pets. Also remember the fleas can come in on your shoes as well as on the dogs. The repo cycle is a real bummer to break. You have to keep after on a regular schedule. You need an attack plan with dates so you don't accidently let a new hatch occur because you forgot the next step or were delayed.
Comfortis really does work. None of the topicals work here anymore. If you look on line it really is a safe, natural product. I found it was all that was needed. The combo for heartworm and fleas is Trifexis. Only down side is its not cheap.
When we had the flea scare back in July, I put Brick on the Comfortis in ADDITION to the Frontline Plus.
I didn't want to take any chances.
