Thanks for the tomato

I went out to pick the ripe stuff, cukes, green peppers, and tomato's from the garden. My little ones have been coming in for weeks but now the big ones were getting red.

I took a large bowl to pick with because there was too much to carry. Bunch of little tomato's and I got two big ones. One of them was really nice, no blemishes.

I put it on top of the counter and remembered that I didn't latch the breezeway door. Go to do that and heard dh's car door shut in the garage. Yup...I have AAADD. Opened the door to the garage for Dh to come in and noticed that both dogs had run outside(in the back) and were eating something. I thought maybe it was the greenbeans that I had given them from the garden.

Go to show Dh the beautiful tomato I had and look in the bowl. There's only one tomato in there, and its not the good one.

Remember the dogs eating something outside....Why couldn't they have taken the blemished tomato.

I gave Luna a cherry tomato from the garden about a week ago. She was so interested in what I was doing, I figured "lets see what she thinks". She was very excited, gingerly took it from my fingers, and carried it around the house with her for about 3 hours. Eventually, I think she ate it. If I find it under a couch cushion, I'll know otherwise.
Yep, now you know they will eat anything!! Sorry. There will be more.
Now that they got a taste for it they will be raiding your garden!

Mad was helping me garden the other night. I'm always looking for new hobbies for her so I called her over, picked a cherry tomato, handed it to her, she inhaled it and looked for more. Repeated a couple of times, showed her the clusters and said "help yourself"

Well, she's a smart dog, but that whole lack of opposable thumbs thing was frusrtrating her a bit. She ended up sort of mauling the clusters and then dropping some tomatos, but not bothering to look for them because she had whole plants to pick from, yippee!!

I have three plants, two varieties, those things are prolific, she's welcome to help herself any time.

Now, if she starts picking my beefsteaks etc off the plant, we may need to re-evaluate. I did slip her a roma on our way back into the house and after dropping it a few times she finally realized that the best way to avoid that was literally inhale it.

Methinks I've created a monster.

I don't actually think tomatoes, certainly not in bulk, are particularly great for dogs, but it amuses her, so...

So far butch doesn't seem interested in the tomatoes, he does go out and help dad pick them but so far no stealing.

Now if we could just keep the chipmunks away from them, go out to pick and several have little bites in them. I do eat them, just cut around it because I am not wasting a home grown tomato for anyone.
They knew which one was the best....sorry,but on the bright side there will be more prized tomato's!
Just have to take up for the cute furkids and their antics, see ya... :sidestep:

I used to grow alpine strawberries in my front garden. They are tiny but really sweet when ripe.

The routinue was the dogs, both passed now, went in the front garden while I got shoes and leads ready. Every morning I picked the few ripe strawberries and ate them, I only had a couple of plants and only a few are ripe at a time. I made the mistake of offering the dogs one each one morning the dalmo didn't like them but the kelpie/lab cross did.

It took me quite a few days to realise that there were no ripe strawberries because my boy was sniffing his way through the plants and picking out the ripe ones to eat. I never got to eat a ripe alpine strawberry again unless I harvested before I let the dogs out.
I was picking my large tomatoes a few days ago, and caught Luna with her nose in the basket sniffing them. She's been enjoying the occasional cherry tomato, and she was very curious about the bigger varieties. Thinking of this thread, I quickly discouraged her from checking them out too closely!
I really do have to laugh about this!!!! :P

I grew in a pot lovely what they call "Tom Thumb" tomatoes, lovely and small, nice to grow in a pot, sweet as hell and when ripened, served whole in salads, mine outside were just about full on ripe and juicy to harvest from the pots, planning in our salad the whole "tom Thumb" mini tomatoes to add to it

Went outside to pick fresh for dinner, Hmmmm what's left, friggin hell the tomotoe vine, less all the ripe ready to go tomatoes  8O

Sheepie girls love tomatoes oh and also parsley, tried that also, gone as soon as it was ready to pick, at least their breath smelt good after a parsley munch

I gave up on sheepies and any sort of herb, salad or vegie area

Even had a strawberry pot and ready to go with what grew, Heck where are the friggin strawberries :lmt: Me suspect gone to the dogs those ruby red ripe fruits!!! :twitch:  :P

Mine go crazy over apples too, no WAY am I planting an apple tree :sidestep: :P
Lisa, you reminded me of when we lived in a house with a huge fig tree out the back. We had our first dalmo and a kelpie lab cross. Boy did they LURV those figs.
Luckily they lived in the garage then. I swear if I'd have lit a match I would have blown up the garage. I had to hold my breath as much as possible when I went to get the car. :twitch:
